Anastasio Nso’s vivid heritage and culture are delightfully on display for us all to enjoy on his latest fusion single titled ‘Only One World’, or ‘Un Mundo’ in the Spanish it is sung in. A piece that defies characterization in any way other than being colorful, fresh, uplifting, and quite pretty.
Based in Toronto, Canada, Anastasio’s roots are embedded deep in central Africa, having been born in mainland Equatorial Guinea and brought up there being immersed in rich musical traditions, starting from his guitar playing father, to hosting people from his village in his home growing up for singing and dancing nights, among those are local music stars Ecuaga Miko and his wife, who would use the chants of the villagers as base for their performances. The influences didn’t stop there, as Nso moved to Madrid later in life where he formed his first band and toured the country.
Such lush musical backgrounds are all beautifully represented in ‘Un Mundo’. A piece of world music that’s reggae, pop, and latin. The fantastically warm harmonies are deep and embracing, a lush pillow beneath Nso’s soulful voice and delivery. The punchy beat trudges along in a slow tempo, creating an effervescent and light groove that further supports the wonderful vocal performance. Nso’s voice is charming and capable. Unerringly African, Nso’s nasal syllables are unique and memorable, forming an essential part of the song’s charm, next to its delightful melodies, and quite minimal composition.
‘Un Mundo’ can be left on loop for hours and would not get old. An airy piece of passionate music that’s wrapped with love and care, in a colorful display that has a few cultures wrapped inside, but in its core, unquestionably African.
