WHO SAYS IT’S EVER TOO LATE?

Some of the most interesting creative chapters begin when we least expect them. For 50mething, that chapter arrived at 58, with a decision to finally bring decades of ideas and a catalogue of around 70 unreleased tracks into the world. The Ealing-based independent artist’s latest single, These Fine Lines, is a fitting addition to that journey; a reflective exploration of love, experience, and the possibility of beginning again.

These Fine Lines centres on the idea of finding love later in life. Interestingly, the song began with its title, with the lyrics then flowing naturally around its central theme. That organic approach gives the track an understated emotional quality, allowing romance and second chances to emerge without becoming overly sentimental.

The artist blends alternative indie, R&B, blue-eyed soul, and electronic textures into a sound that feels intimate yet carefully produced. Recorded entirely in a home studio, the track is built around a short riff repeated twice, which the artist says brought Ryuichi Sakamoto to mind. There is a particular admiration for Sakamoto’s work with David Sylvian on Forbidden Colours, and traces of that delicate melodic sensibility can be felt here.

The story behind the release adds another layer. A former dancer and garden builder, 50mething began releasing music at 58, following Slowly Through the Night, a deeply personal response to a cancer diagnosis received in 2024. With things having progressed well, the artist has chosen to keep moving forward, gradually sharing a substantial body of work.

These Fine Lines is about more than finding love again. It is about remaining open to possibility when life has already taken you through several chapters. With its blend of personal storytelling and understated electronic production, the song becomes a quiet celebration of reinvention, and a reminder that creativity does not come with an expiry date.

For 50mething, These Fine Lines is, in fact, another beginning!
