Roger K Explores Identity, Masking and Vulnerability on New Single “Alter Ego”

Australia – Independent pop artist Roger K releases “Alter Ego,” a track rooted in his appreciation for 90s UK garage, particularly the Artful Dodger’s work with Craig David that first bridged R&B and house for him. The song blends those garage foundations with contemporary production touches inspired by artists such as Fred again.. and the reverse warps heard in Don Toliver’s “E85.”

The concept emerged from a conversation with a health and safety representative about mental health and how some autistic people experience masking in public. That discussion prompted deeper reflection on how, from a young age, most people learn to behave in ways that meet society’s expectations. Those norms help us connect, yet they can also become a kind of armour. Over time, we grow so accustomed to wearing it that we forget what it feels like to be without it.

When we meet someone we truly connect with, a best friend or someone we fall in love with, we may finally lower that armour. But what happens when, even for a moment, the alter ego disappears? Freedom can feel liberating, yet it can also leave us feeling naked, vulnerable, and exposed. In that moment we may find ourselves reaching for the very thing we were able to let go of, because it has always made us feel safe.

That contradiction sits at the heart of “Alter Ego”: the strange tension of wanting to be free of the mask while desperately needing its protection when we feel most exposed.

An accompanying visualiser explores the idea through a simple, understated visual story that captures the moment of vulnerability when the alter ego disappears, allowing the emotion and meaning to take centre stage.
