Independent artist 50mething has released his powerful new single “Silence,” a raw and unflinching examination of women’s safety on the streets and the vulnerability faced by those travelling home alone. The track arrives as part of a deliberate wave of releases from the artist’s extensive 70-track unreleased catalogue, distributed via DITTO.
At 58, 50mething – a former professional dancer and garden builder – has entered the music business with the urgency of someone who has lived enough to know time is precious. After a 2024 cancer diagnosis, his debut single “Slowly through the night” (January 2026) served as a deeply personal testament to survival. Now, with treatment progressing well, he is steadily sharing the wealth of music he has quietly amassed, each track shaped by social and political realities rather than trends.
“Silence” was written in direct response to the murder of Sarah Everard in the UK and a harrowing local case in which a young woman went missing and was later discovered in a river. The song captures the chilling image of a body hidden from view, left to nature until found – a horror that, the artist notes, “happens all the time, too often.” It forces the listener to confront the final terrifying moments of those who never made it home.

The artist explains: “This song tweaks on an emotional nerve. Putting oneself in that position doesn’t bear thinking about.” Released alongside two other tracks just before International Women’s Day, “Silence” carries no celebration — only a pointed reminder that the same demographic continues to be targeted.
Working entirely alone as an independent artist from his home studio, 50mething recorded “Silence” (and all his material) using a homemade vocal booth, a collection of instruments, and a 24-track digital recorder. Mixing and mastering were handled remotely through the online platform SOUNDBETTER, with assistance from Sefi Carmel and Daniela Rivera at different stages. He plans to eventually transition to Logic Pro but remains focused on the music itself rather than the gear.
Musically, the track draws from a lifetime of influences that the artist describes as “all going into the melting pot to create a new sound.” What sets “Silence” apart is its storytelling: “I guess, for me, the detail is in the storytelling. Too much stuff gets reported on and then forgotten about. Brushed under the carpet. It’s important to keep things in the forefront. If we want to see change.”
After marriage, children, divorce, home ownership, mortgage payoff, selling the house, and a bout with cancer, 50mething’s late entry into music is less a career pivot than a continuation of resilience. “At 58, I have seen a bit of life… And all you can do is keep pushing through,” he says. “I don’t know where I would be without the gym though!!!!”
“Silence” is now available on all major streaming platforms via DITTO. More tracks from 50mething’s substantial catalogue will follow throughout 2026.
