“Deep Mollusca” is the latest eclectic musical adventure from American musician William Sanford…a true artist that doesn’t know boundaries in art…a sonic explorer, bringing to the world his findings from his adventures and putting it into a storytelling concept…what do we need more than this?

William manages to achieve something great with his music and that is creating never heard or experienced material before…and with “Deep Mollusca” you’ll have a plethora of those, to be precise, 15 tracks to explore.

It’s evident from William’s artistic direction that he knows no boundaries when it comes to the creative creation of music…within the confines of “Deep Mollusca” you travel to the depths of the ocean with some great ambient elements, and travel in time, to hear music from the future…

…and with an extremely high level of diversity that doesn’t only span from one track to another, actually within the track itself too…William takes a very fresh and surprising progressive approach to his compositions.

For example…the track “Neopilina”, in itself, has ambient, chill and upbeat electro music…

…another one is “Manna from Above and/or Marine Snow”…it’s synth based, cinematic and anthemic all at the same time.

“Abyssal Solenogastres” and “The Terrifyingly Beautiful Lives of Sea Angels” are both thoroughly electronic tracks, but with a twist…it has an amazing 90s synth sound, mood and feel and it absolutely rocks and both of them unleashes energy from within yourself.

…speaking of diversity earlier…we have to mention “Back to Benthic” a fusion/progressive track with the absolutely surprising inclusion of 8 bit elements…didn’t expect that!

“Deep Mollusca” has a very strong storytelling presence across its runtime…

This is one album that needs to be checked out…and do it like you’re about to watch a short movie…that’s the way it should be viewed, as a piece of art that transcends just the sonic realm…

…actually, there is a story that goes with the album and it goes a bit like this…and get ready for some out-of-the-box imagination and creativity…

The story begins with a pelagic plunge with The Faceless Protagonist, where he finds himself in the abyssal depths of the ocean floor. Our faceless protagonist meets slimy, squirmy comrades who seem content with their lowly positions. They taste Marine Snow and witness a Whale Fall, and even meet a group of Octopodes guarding their brood. However, they are searching for something and swim upwards towards the light. To their horror, they encounter predators like sea angels and photic zone…

…they return to benthic and continue their crawl, encountering curious creatures and performing bizarre rituals. After passing filter feeders and coveting their rainbow lips, they break water and climb onto the shore…

…despite the protection provided by their chiton allies, they are pecked by seagulls and eventually find themselves alone. The only thing they find is a Beached Whale, a bloated sacrifice covered in flies. They gaze up at the sun and wonder what is up from the floor.

and the artist ends the story with “The irony is that when we only dream about what is above, we cannot see just how far we have crawled”

Let’s not forget to mention how cool and brilliant the artwork is…this is the last element, the last piece of the puzzle to creating this expansive experience by the hands of the amazing artist Emilija Mitchell.

“Deep Mollusca” is a formidable musical ocean that  is worth checking out and diving deep into it to experience new, never before seen elements.

Wishing all the best to the musical explorer William Sanford.

Cheers!
