With the release of their first album, “Digital Sinners”, Mulahbae established themselves as one of the freshest new voices from Beirut to pay attention to. With a first album that was originally developed during quarantine, their latest released single “DESTRUCTIVE” shows that this album was not a one-time hit developed in a particularly unreal time, but that Mulahbae’s voice remains fresh and distinct. The Lebanese artist’s formal education was in fashion and pattern designing, a craft that surprisingly pours into their music creations well.
Released on the 18th of July this year, “DESTRUCTIVE” is the ultimate chill club summer banger. Serving as the fourth and final single from their second studio album MYTHOMANIA, “DESTRUCTIVE” is, however, also a carefully crafted (lyrically and musically) piece that has its place on Mulahbae’s musical journey of self-discovery and exploration of pathological problems, relationship troubles, and our extreme, contradictory methods to dealing with such things. The song delves into themes of betrayal and smug revenge, a destructive type of empowerment.
Fusing synth-pop and electro-pop, with all their different influences, this track nearly never saw the light of day. With three sonically different demo versions and a near resolution to never releasing the song, Mulahbae only changed their mind when the song—prior to any official release—was played by DJ friends in parties and garnered the attention of different crowds.
This tumultuous backstory might be the reason behind the song’s interesting patterning and its mosaic-like vibe that gives its distinctness. No matter the reason, however, overall, “DESTRUCTIVE” is a song you want to enjoy the rest of the summer dancing to.
