Full of delicate, acoustic flourishes, Cristina Movileanu’s latest piece is a wonderfully rich and warm piece of folk with clear pop leanings. A song that took me on a breezy and relaxing journey with its folky depth and expert pop immediacy.
Moldavian musician Cristina Movileanu is based in the town of Dunshaughlin in Ireland, and her lush, colorful art is not a matter of accident. Instead, this academic artist, with her master’s degree in fine arts, seems to know a finite, scientific method to lull listeners in with the atmospheres she so capably weaves with a seemingly limited toy box of musical tools.
On Cristina’s latest release ‘Heaven’s Blend’, she is collaborating with a fan from Spain, Marjo Gomez on the lyrics, and the Spanish leanings seep deeply into Movileanu’s tangible tapestry of folk. From the bouncy, moving bass line, to the Latin tinges in the harmony and the percussion, it gives a dream-pop, cinematic folk vibe that beautifully blends in with Movileanu’s ethereal vocal melodies and haunting delivery. Also, the harmony between the thin but effective acoustic guitar lines and the hypnotic percussion create a dynamic that never ceases for a moment, along with the song’s few chord sequences, all adding to that forward momentum with multiple 2-chord repetitions and cyclic, short melodies, we are left with a song that is infinitely engaging and smooth.
‘Heaven’s Blend’ was produced with the talented team from Musiversal. It is indeed full of imaginative, creative musical blends that did not fail to leave a lasting imprint on my memory. I replayed this song one too many times, and I only let go when I had to. Cristina Movileanu and Marjo Gomez’s latest cut is truly gorgeous.
