With the spooky season just past us, we get a chance to look at Maddy Storm’s latest season-friendly single ‘Last Halloween’, and to see (or rather hear) what it is all about.

British, Manchester-based artist Maddy Storm is a singer and a songwriter whose message is basically one of empowering more female artists to be present in the audio engineering and production side of the music industry. ‘Last Halloween’ is a completely self-written, recorded, and mixed single, the first single from Maddy since she dropped her debut EP to adequate acclaim, and as a single, it continues to showcase the sensibilities of Storm as a producer.

The simplistic, pop-centered, and radio-friendly composition leaves a lot of room for Storm to be creative with her beats, sound design, and setting an atmosphere, which she capitulates on, with seeming pleasure. The spooky subbass, the start-stop, jagged trap beats, and the spectral synths that flutter in the aura of the song all leave Storm ample space to deliver her lines, somewhere between belting and rapping, Storm’s delivery is concise and confident, and is very suitable for the sound that she is going for, an accessible piece of pop with thoughtful lyrics and a memorable vibe.

In her own words, ‘Last Halloween’ is a cathartic anthem about being lost in one’s twenties, and it is about mental health. She also says the song predicted the end of her 8-year-long relationship, and while we don’t know if that is good or bad for her, we can only wish that Storm is at peace now and that she continues onwards with her quest to inspire more woman to produce music, if for nothing other than she is quite good at it.
