From the track’s chill approach and pad-heavy vibes, Bear Beat creates an ensnaring tapestry of silky, smooth textures that carry his minimal chord sequences. On top, Bear Beat’s beats are solid, and his groove is tight, but none are given an above-all role in ‘Man Down’, Bear Beat’s music is more structured and calculated than thumping, more akin to trip hop than to techno, to Massive Attack than Jeff Mills.
The man’s vocal samples are beautifully utilized in the environment that he crafted. From their rhythmic chopping to their textural effect, Bear Beat’s use of female and male vocal samples that are melodically loaded create a contrast that lends the song a depth that’s never seen, but always felt, and the hummed vocal riff grows to be an indispensable part of the track’s harmonic structure.
