It’s very easy getting lost while listening to Moody Mac’s latest release. As vocal textures blend, outlandish and hypnotizing, it gets more challenging to piece the song together as it progresses. Until one point, when everything clicks, and the song develops into something quite unusual.
An artist and songwriter that hails from Munich, Moody Mac is a hip hop fanatic who has in time veered away from hip hop in order to explore different vibes and genres that could help him better express himself, as making music for Mac ism a form of pure expression. ‘On My Own’, the title of Moody Mac’s latest single, can probably be safely categorized as a fusion of ambience and hip hop.
It is clearly experimental with its snazzy trap beats, sparse and almost entirely driven by the figures on the hihats. The vocals are then divided between two distinct lines. A semi-conventional, laid back melody, more spoken than sung in how relaxed they are, and a line of twisted and processed lines that seem to carry the larger lyrical heft of the song. Guttural and deep, and clinically clean, the alien nature of that vocal line creates an unusual atmosphere that’s intoxicating and inviting.
‘On My Own’ displays Moody Mac in his most expressive of forms. Creating something that’s musically left-field and unheard of using elements that can be counted on one hand. There can be no denying that ‘On My Own’ is divisive, but then there can also be no denying the gravitational pull of this song’s alien sparsity.
