Following Lesley Gore’s recent resurgence into the spotlight with a Billboard #1, and a placement in Calvin Klein’s global advertising campaign with Jeremy Allen White, The Heroic Enthusiasts have been entrusted to remix Gore’s legendary ‘You Don’t Own Me’. They delivered.
Accompanying ECR’s latest remix and remaster of Lesley Gore’s final album, done by the original producer and ECR founder Blake Morgan, which has skyrocketed Gore’s name once again around the globe, The Heroic Enthusiasts have prepared 2 remixes for Gore’s 2005 version of ‘You Don’t Own Me’, as fellow ECR-signed musicians and acclaimed electronic music producers in their own right. They delivered an Enthusiastic Mix and a Heroic Mix.
A pair of very enjoyable listeners on their own, the jungle rhythms and synth bass on the Enthusiastic Mix are greatly efficient. The mix is infused with potent hints of acid jazz with its uncommon handling of the vocal melodies with chords that fall outside of the key, creating eye-opening, raunchy moments of dissonance that elevate the song’s original pop-centric approach. Judging by its name, the Heroic Mix is based on empowering string stabs a strong drum presence, and a more commonplace handling of the song’s original harmonic structure. It is a solid listen, if a little safer than the very inventive Enthusiastic Mix.
The Heroic Enthusiasts deliver faithful remixes that show a well-beloved classic in a pair of completely new guises, executed beautifully and to high production standards that can only be expected from the Rochester electronica veterans The Heroic Enthusiasts.
