The AJM Show has made his entrance into the world of indie-pop with his striking debut EP Matinée, a seven-track that brings previous fan favourites and exciting new numbers, taking audiences on a journey through funk, synth-pop and indie-rock delivering infectious rhythms and resonating lyrics.
The project has been a long time coming for the man behind the show, Alex Martin, who started the project a few years back, challenging his artistry with a new solo project.
In his words, “It’s indie-pop/rock at its core but has a further blend of influence and instrumentation from further afield, such as R’n’B & funk. The writing for this project began during the latter stages of the pandemic and is self-produced/recorded, also featuring some excellent musicians who’ve contributed. Lyrically, it tackles a variety of themes, such as fracturing relationships longing for youth, and the monotonous life that stemmed from lockdown.”
There’s a clear penchant for grooves across the project, but this root is laced with sparkling synths, pop melody vocals and bright finishing touches. Lush arrangements are all self-produced, showing talent beyond his frontman captivation. In the highest highs and momentous lows, Alex pours his heart into it all, showing why he was so quickly championed by BBC Introducing and the music press.
