There’s a lot going on in this minute-and-a-half piece of dark, wordless electronica. CRUCIAL is Penny’s debut single. Penny is Penny Loftéen, a producer from Stockholm, Sweden. He is injecting a lot of meaning into this tiny piece of sonic architecture.
CRUCIAL is about being transported from a state of panic and anxiety back to life, through the words of a special someone. Instead of capturing the sound from the perspective of the positive mind, the doer, Penny opted to capture it from the dark side, that of the anxious mind. A very original take on an otherwise overused trope. The result is dark, foreboding throbbing bass on top of a haunting minimal composition, delivered via eerie effects and mysterious clicks. The beat is industrial and dominated by clacky, sparse percussion. The comforting words are perhaps delivered through the hauntingly melodic, chopped-up voice. A processed spectral lull that sticks to the mind.
CRUCIAL is one and a half minutes long, and it’s a debut single, and it’s somehow spectacular. I’m more than happy to say that Penny Loftéen has far exceeded our expectations, and we’re now waiting for what more he has to offer.
