Seductive, sizzling, and with an intriguing character story in its creative core, ‘Disco Sally’ is an endlessly entertaining and dark piece of synth and art pop from the always-fresh Ralphy.
Based in Los Angeles, Ralphy teams up one more time with producer Samjgarfield. And with the latter taking care of the production, beats, and vocals, ‘Disco Sally’ is the first extensive collaboration between the two artists. And what a collaboration it is. The two-chords minimal arrangement is just right for the hypnotic effect, and the buzzing synth bass line, following a militaristic march rhythm, shows just how versatile Ralphy and Garfield are. The great disco themes are then explored further with snappy, rhythmic syncopation, glamorous string soars that took right back to the 70s, and interspersed vocal utterances that add character without detracting from the battery of cool that is the music.
Revolving around the character of Sally Lippman, a retired lawyer in her seventies who found a new passion in going out dancing night after night in Studio 54. An inspiring character who found her way into song with this elegant-but-sleazy disco cut.
With racing, playful rhythms, and an easy-to-move-to-arrangement, ‘Disco Sally’ ends up being successful to a potent degree. A truly intoxicating atmosphere was woven by Ralphy and producer Samjgarfield on this one.
