Honey in the Rock by The Blue and Gold

Ariella Horvath

The Blue and Gold is a new project by the Duo, Ndidi O and Trish Klein. Both strong and successful female musicians who have outstanding achievements in their genre of interest. Ndidi a Juno nominee and WCMA; the Western Canadian Music Awards ‘Blues artist of the year’, while Trish Klein, a banjo player and folk-roots guitarist who was part of The Be Good Tanyas, Frazey Ford and Po’ Girl.

“Honey in the Rock” is the first single release as part of the debut album “The Blue and Gold” coming out on April 29th with 10 more songs to follow. The album is all reinterpretations and covers of renowned female artists like Memphis Minnie, Lottie Kimbrough, Mamie Forehand, Jessie Mae Hemphill, Sister Rosetta Tharpe, and one song by the infamous songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie. This single specifically is a reinterpretation of Blind Mamie Forehand’s delicate gospel blues masterpiece. Mamie Forehand is considered one of the earliest professional female country blues and gospel singers. Its musical lines are very simple and clean, a guitar, percussion, bass, and vocals. The sound isn’t overwhelming in anyway, doesn’t leave you wondering and uncovering layers of music, it’s all out there in a simple, beautiful way. A slow seductive blues/jazzy beat with a simple chord progression and a duple meter.

The only thing came to mind while listening to it is how it could belong to the soundtrack of “Sons of Anarchy”, it has the same depth and vibe. We’re looking forward to listening to the entire album as it pays tribute to all the female blues legends and icons.
