Gianfranco GFN’s freeform ensemble of jazzy pop returns with ‘In My Dreams’, the fifth track of his latest album, and it continues to prove the man is a capable arranger and songwriter capable of spinning delicate and loaded mixes into gently cacophonous pieces of wholesome pop.
As per the usual from the Swiss, Bienne-based singer, and songwriter Gianfranco GFN, ‘In My Dreams’ comes loaded with an intricate mix of instrumental performances that are masterfully weaved into a grandeur that shimmers and shines like a graceful disco ball. The vibes are mostly driven by a truly terrific piece of funk rhythm guitar that wah-wahs its way through the song with pops and chugs for days, and also by a composition that’s both familiar and easygoing while being emotive and melodic, reminiscent of 70s disco ballads.
Beneath the artsy ad-libs, the guitars, the strings, and the atmospherics, ‘In My Dreams’ moves forward by the grace of a driving groove with a deep pocket and a restrained tempo that really glues everything together masterfully. Restrained but bold, stable but great fun.
‘In My Dreams’ is not my first exposure to the ambitious pop journeys from Gianfranco GFN, but it is easily my favorite of his so far. ‘In My Dreams’ is a balanced piece of expertly crafted pop that’s loaded with organs and guitars that set a mood, rhythm that’s solid as bone, and vocals that are more on point than ever before, courtesy of Vladimir Crabone. A lively tune that’s timeless and chic.
