Johnny Dysfunctional may be sharing playlist real estate with some of the biggest names in music, but the Derbyshire-based indie artist is still more likely to be found turning up at a party in an outrageous costume than headlining a major stage. His track “Revenge Hurt on the Social Networks” has landed in a best-selling “magnificent rap songs” playlist alongside Kanye West, Drake and Travis Scott, while also appearing on major pop playlists with Coldplay and Harry Styles and featuring on Greatest Songs of All Time lists that include Billie Eilish, Taylor Swift and Avicii.
Yet Dysfunctional, true to his name, continues to earn more performing as a Singagram in crazy fancy-dress costumes than he currently makes from streaming his own material. Those gigs fund his recording sessions.
“As an Indie artist I do everything myself. It can be difficult,” he explains. “I really don’t have music business contacts to help. I’m not pleading poverty, but to finance recording sessions I sing at celebration parties wearing outlandish costumes. Currently that pays much better than singing my own songs. No worries though. I probably have more crazy fun than Kanye West, Travis Scott or Drake.”
Writing from a hillside cottage in Derbyshire, Dysfunctional describes himself as “genre fluid.” His voice, too, moves freely across registers; he performs all his own vocal harmonies, stretching into falsetto when the song demands it. A prolific pop writer, he creates as and when inspiration strikes, often drawing from everyday life rather than romantic clichés.
“I write as and when I feel, which is often, and anything in my life can spark creativity,” he says. “Singagram events might seem superficial, but they’re not. They’re real life. Laughter and tears. At those events I get feedback and ideas from people. Hey, not every song is inspired by romantic sunsets.”
While “Revenge Hurt on the Social Networks” continues to gain traction on high-profile playlists, Dysfunctional remains firmly independent, financing his own sessions, handling every aspect of his career, and treating the contrast between major-playlist success and costume-party gigs as part of the adventure.
