Alt-pop artist Bonze released a new dreamy melancholic love single ‘(mercedes)’ from London, UK on the 18th of November via Bad Apple Records. ‘(mercedes)’ was co-produced by Fred Clough, and the song’s hypnotic visualiser was created by visual artist Tokamu.
‘(mercedes)’ is a song about accepting the uncertainty of the future for the sake of certain love.
Bonze manages to blend elements of songwriting, alt-pop, glitchy electronica, and club culture into one very unique experience with an open and layered feeling.
The track evolves and subtly shifts things around in its production with each section, and even while it keeps some melodic ideas being repeated over the course of the track, it has enough change happening to intentionally re-contextualize those repeated ideas and give them more impact each time.
Bonze has taken his songwriting in reflective lyrics, and blended it with alt-pop vocal production and synths, electronica glitches and fractures, and a beat drop from two-step, and successfully mixed all of these influences into one cohesive sound. There’s something in ‘(mercedes)’ for —almost— everyone.
‘(mercedes)’ is exploratory and deep, but also quite simple. It’s an easy-going song with melancholic overtones that grabs you with subtle details on each replay. It is a perfect song for when you’re thinking of the special someone —or maybe even something— whom you love.
