Bleed by Stephanie Westdal

0

WRITTEN IN 10 MINUTES YET LEAVING US A WITH TIMELESS EMOTIONAL IMPACT

Stephanie Westdal’s Bleed re-release is a hauntingly evocative song that delves into the pain of mental health struggles, self-harm, and the isolation that often accompanies depression. The song’s bold, cutting lyrics contrast with the subtle and seductive melody, creating a powerful emotional conflict between the façade people present and the deep inner turmoil they actually feel. It’s a cry for help wrapped in a delicate, melodic cloak—a raw reflection of the masks we often wear to survive.

Originally written in just ten minutes in 1996, Bleed was born out of Westdal’s personal emotional struggles, capturing the desperation of feeling lost and misunderstood. Upon its first live performance, the song resonated deeply with listeners, who quickly connected with its rawness and emotional depth. Referred to as the “switchblade song” for its sharp, visceral imagery, the track struck a chord with audiences, moving many to tears and solidifying its place in Westdal’s career.

The chorus is especially moving and cleverly catchy, whether due to its imagery or its laid-back beats and flowy progression. Right from the intro, you hear, “Got a life, got a good life. I got switchblades, I got switch knives. I’m gonna bleed all over,” which is an incredibly raw and sophisticated expression of the complexity of such emotions and situations.

Now re-released as Bleed 2024, the song retains its original intensity while benefiting from updated production by Chris Burke-Gaffney and mastering by Allen Hunnie. The delicate balance between the song’s understated instrumentation and Westdal’s emotionally charged vocals makes it both haunting and intimate, allowing the lyrics to take center stage.

The accompanying visual presentation adds depth to the experience, with striking photography by Paul Alexander and artwork by Jayne Trimble, complemented by the styling of Kim Appelt and makeup by Jocelyn Caballero-Despres. Distributed by World Peach Records, Bleed 2024 remains a timeless exploration of emotional vulnerability, reminding us that, even decades later, its message is just as relevant. It stands as both a personal testimony and a universal anthem for anyone struggling with their mental health.

EP: This Is It by Wrash Heed

0

Wrash Heed’s blend of afrobeat with quite accessible pop sensibilities, alongside some terrific musical ideas all prove his latest EP This Is It to be a short, sweet, concise, and a pretty easy to love listen.

Another noteworthy musical export from Africa, Wrash Heed is the stage name for Nigerian native Rasheed Osanyinpeju, based in the capital Lagos. A singer and songwriter whose deep roots in afrobeat lend themselves to his pop-conscious musicality. Wrash Heed’s songs are delightful and direct, little, pop gems that feature engaging and quite special rhythms, courtesy of Rasheed’s home country.

This Is It showcases Wrash Heed as a generally versatile artist, blending pop, RnB, soul and afrobeats with delicious fluency. The five tunes comprising this EP are all uniformly melodic and chill, with astoundingly crisp mixes that highlight Rasheed’s playful and vulnerable deliveries, alongside his delectable beats, and pop-centered song structures. The pieces are lightweight mostly, leading more to an album that just feels like a breeze.

‘Taken or Single’ highlights some intricate guitar usage, a rumbling bass line, and a generally very dynamic atmosphere. A brilliant, addictive starter. Another great entrance is the lively and subtly energetic ‘Showcase’, a song that introduces Wrash Heed’s sunny side with its optimistic melodies and familiar sounding chord structure, and on the tail end of the album we have ‘My Road’, one of the EP’s nicest, softest, and most approachable pieces with its subdued and gentle bass, warm ad libs, and touching composition.

For a 13-minute long listen, This Is It genuinely punches way further than it should. But with solid songwriting, lyrical prowess, and extremely fulfilling and engaging mixes, This Is It is easily a masterful listen, displaying Wrash Heed as a truly unique curator of afrobeats and pop who has potential to dominate this steadily growing market with artful musicianship and a delicate songwriting balance.

Rona Mac brings love and loss to new single ‘Buttercup’

0

Hailing from a remote tip of Wales, DIY artist Rona Mac has supported the likes of Willy Mason and Billie Marten, bringing her alt-folk-leaning sound to new audiences. With her debut album and a tour on the horizon, Rona explores love, loss and mental health. Self-produced, the artist has seen recognition from BBC Radio 1, 6, and Wales and has been funded by the PRS Foundation and Help Musicians.

Rona’s final release ahead of her album Honeymilk & Heavy Weather is the gorgeous acoustic number ‘Buttercup’. The balance between falling in love and experiencing the heavy weight of grief is a heart-wrenching pairing, but Rona delivers it with such poise and poignance.

The elegance of a folky acoustic guitar pitted against a raw and unfiltered vocal talent is always a recipe for beauty. Still, this latest track adds a sense of authenticity that you can’t fake. The slight climax at the two-minute mark is a great example of letting the emotions control your performance and feeling every note more deeply. The track ends gently, which adds to the warmth one final time.

Rona explains, “There’s some simple beauty in a buttercup. A fleeting, yellow joy reflected onto chins, old and young, as you conclude that yes, indeed, we do like butter. This song was written during a time when I was simultaneously reeling from grief and giddy from falling in love. In my experience, when people die life gets crisper, more tangible and valuable and fragile. I was holding a new love in my arms with the fresh re-acknowledgement that everything is temporary. Amongst the turmoil of emotion, it made simple things, like buttercups, all the more special. And I think buttercups have kind faces, don’t you?

The recording is a little rough because, well, it just is. I recorded it on a dictaphone and felt the emotion in that specific take, so I left it how it is. Simple. This song definitely leans into my folk singer-songwriter roots, and it will be a book-end to the album released on October 11th.”

With the line “champagne on the walls”, each chorus brings just that, a bottle-popping party sentiment filled with an unreserved blowout intention. As Ella charges through the lyrics, the instrumentals bring a shattering pop-rock sound, fiercely ripping catchy melodies from gritty distorted tones.

Ella explains the new single, “Penny Lane is a song inspired by my upbringing in ny. It’s such a unique place where I found beauty in the city’s chaos. A night walking up to a show or bar can turn into an entire adventure, the people you meet and the experiences you have. There’s a romance and the “are we living a movie?” moments that comes with a great night out here. There is no place quite like it.”

Album: Orchestrope by Helen Yee

0

With her first solo album Orchestrope, Helen Yee skilfully combines modern, classical, and ambient sounds into an emotional experience. Along with her abilities in live looping and electronic creation with Ableton Live, the album highlights her talents as a violinist and composer. She created a masterpiece that is distinctive and dramatic. Making the audience feel the music which provokes an incredible journey to experience.

Yee writes clearly from a background spanning classical music, indie rock, and improvisational performance. From layers of atmospheric drones and percussive string techniques such as col legno—playing with the bow—tracks like the title piece, Orchestrope, progressively become a symphonic and even cinematic landscape. This method of layering sounds reflects the artistic inclinations of musicians like Hildur Guðnadóttir and Nils Frahm, whose works equally stress atmosphere and emotional development. But Yee offers an organic improvisational energy, probably inspired by her years performing live, and this gives her uniqueness from her colleagues.

With Yee playing all instruments herself—violin, erhu, frame drum, and electronic elements—the album’s instrumentation mostly consists of string performances. Her skill in combining contemporary electronic production with ancient string techniques provides the song with a wide acoustic spectrum. She can create broad soundscapes reflecting her classical training by carefully stacking the tracks and experimenting with more avant-garde structures and sounds. With electronic loops and sweeping double-stops, tracks like Ferromagnetica explore gritty sound design, so highlighting her electronic sound experimentation influenced by Ableton Live.

Though Orchestrope is instrumental, Yee’s musical approach has a vocal dimension, particularly in the way her melodies sing over the arrangement. Songs like Noche de Julia exhibit this poetic nature; the eerie tune seems to tell an emotional trip free from words. The lack of vocals lets the audience concentrate on the complex interaction among the instruments and the changing textures.

The album is produced immaculately, with great regard for every layer of sound. By using Ableton Live as a looping setup, Yee may investigate the overall sonic capability of her instruments by fusing electronic and acoustic components into a harmonic whole. The production captures an organic, almost live-performance aspect that reflects her live performances and spontaneous attitude; it never seems overdone.

Drawing on Yee’s indie rock and electronic influences as well as her classical string background, orchestrate straggles the genres of ambient, classical, and new-age music. Her varied blend includes modern musicians like Zoe Keating and Maya Beiser, who likewise challenge the boundaries of modern classical music with technology. Still, Yee’s music is unique and clearly emphasizes emotional narrative and change. Like the work of Hildur Guðnadóttir, her compositions are anchored on a wish to arouse intense emotions and transport listeners on an introspection trip.

Though Orchestrope lacks vocals, its instrumental storytelling effectively conveys the album’s concepts. From the sad melody of Noche de Julia, which was once written for a multilingual theatre production, to the hopeful and honest character of Sprung, which Yee notes as a mirror of her path, every song tells a different story. Deep emotions enable listeners to create their own stories inside the soundscape from the music. The album is transforming the listening experience because of the recurrent themes of reflection, rebirth, and emerging.

The amazing first album Helen Yee released highlights her adaptability and musical inventiveness. Rich in emotional depth and musical intricacy, the album is an immersive experience. Orchestrope is a must-listener for anybody enjoying ambient, classical, or experimental music.

AI Song (Made By Me)” by Ginko Bugs

0

“AI Song (Made By Me)” by Ginko Bugs, led by Erik Åredal, is an appealing combination of indie melodic pop-rock that merges a familiar sound with modern themes, especially the rise of AI. Emphasizing human passion and creativity, this track—which was released on August 23, 2024—stands out as a statement on the present technological environment.

Simple at first, the music develops into a whole, rich soundtrack. Before launching towards an iconic chorus—a structure that offers both sonic tension and resolution—the middle section pulls down to minimum instrumentation. This dynamic technique keeps listeners interested and creates a journey reflecting the duality of hope and doubt the song reveals about artificial intelligence. Unlike the technological themes, the song’s usage of a children’s choir in the chorus lends emotional depth and a feeling of innocence.

With obvious references to The Beatles, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie, the inspirations of classic rock are evident all through the song. Especially in the complex production and thoughtful lyrics, Ginko Bugs skilfully integrates the sonics of these legendary performers. Particularly powerful and giving the song a theatrical and expressive quality are the Bowie-esque vocals. Like The Beatles in Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, the song’s aural simplicity—which reminds of The Wall by Pink Floyd—gradually expands into a more complicated arrangement. These inspirations preserve a modern edge while yet giving the song a vintage vibe.

Every instrument in “AI Song (Made By Me)” has time to shine. Åredal’s acoustic guitar forms the basis of the song, while the electric guitar and bass give richness as it develops. The song’s pop-rock approach is complemented by the consistent, driving rhythm the drums offer. Though the production is advanced, it yet has an organic aspect that guarantees the music feels warm and personal instead of overdone. Inspired by Pink Floyd’s soundscapes, atmospheric interludes improve the song’s tone; the children’s chorus lends poignancy.

Among the best aspects of the song is Erik Åredal’s voice. His Bowie-like approach catches the theatricality and earnestness required to transmit the meaning of the song. His voice has a raw, emotional resonance that accentuates the poetic subjects of skepticism, optimism, and technology. The lovely contrast produced by the interaction of Åredal’s lead vocals with the children’s choir strengthens the innocent message in a society of ever more technical sophistication.

Lyrically, “AI Song (Made By Me)” blends hope and doubt to examine how artificial intelligence is influencing society. Using artificial intelligence as a metaphor for development and advancement, the song examines the future while expressing a need to preserve humanity and feeling in an ever-mechanized environment. The tune gains emotional weight from the children’s chorus, which reflects a future generation struggling with these concerns. Reflective and provocative, Åredal’s songwriting fits the lyrical intricacy of David Bowie and Pink Floyd songs.

Classed as indie melodic pop-rock, the song appeals to modern indie music lovers as well as classic rock aficionados. Particularly for those who value the power-pop sounds of former decades, the mixing of appealing pop parts with more intricate rock influences guarantees a general appeal.

The masterful song “AI Song (Made By Me)” strikes a mix between new ideas and production methods and old rock inspirations. Erik Åredal and his band, Ginko Bugs, have created a song that is not only appealing but also thematically resonant, thereby offering a joy to listen to as well as a careful analysis of the direction of technology. The song is a remarkable release in 2024 with its contagious chorus, energetic structure, and lavish production. For those of both modern and vintage rock, “AI Song (Made By Me)” is a must-listener whether your taste is for indie rock or philosophical reflections.
