Retrosaint Pays Homage to Nashville with Upcoming Indie Pop Single ‘False Start,’ Blending Americana Influence – Out August 27th

0

Indie pop project Retrosaint are about to release their latest single which pays homage to their Nashville home base, called “False Start”. Fronted by singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist David Ross, the upcoming track has an unexpected vein of Americana to it that makes it a bit of a departure. Due out on August 27th, fans should expect the unexpected.

Retrosaint formed in 2020 with Ross at the helm and backed by Jonny Lutz on electric guitars, bass and drums. Lutz also produced “False Start,” while Frances Takemoto provided the fiddle-style violins. Ross has been a musician most of his life, as he is a classically trained pianist and appeared on the reality show American Supergroup for its pilot season. Ross struck out on his own soon after as Retrosaint and released his first self-titled album in 2022.

In said EP, the Retrosaint style was straight up and down alt rock, with Ross citing Ben Folds Five and Relient K as major influences. There was always a tinge of blues there as well in songs like “Tango Tongue”, and it’s been developed further in “False Start”. It’s also a very personal song for Ross.

Sometimes good relationships come to an end, for whatever reason. And sometimes, we think we’ve reached some big milestone in life when in fact, the journey hasn’t even started yet. That’s what “False Start” is about. (No, it’s not a song about football. Har har) I was still processing a breakup, while also witnessing a loved one’s marriage fall apart. Writing this song was the best response I could come up with.

The raw emotions of the lyrics are enhanced by the Americana and rock elements Ross added to the song, and since it’s so personal, it may also be why he decided to conscript minimal help in writing and producing it.

This song is the first commercial release to come out of my home studio (still yet-to-be-named) in Nashville, a project that was several years in the making. Besides the mastering, the only people involved in creating it were close friends of mine–a departure from my past approach to the recording process. I’m super proud of this fact!

Despite minimal intervention, the end product that is “False Start” has come out even more polished than previous Retrosaint work, so it’s clear Ross is onto something. The pop elements to the song will also likely make its subject matter even more relatable. Ross can expect his exposure and fan base to grow even further, so the track will be anything but a “False Start”.

NOW! by Annie Minogue Band

0

Annie Minogue Band‘s latest song is a stunning piece of rocking americana that benefits from Annie’s searing vocal charisma, an endlessly tight backing by the band, and a whole lot of unforgettable attitude.

‘NOW!’ is the latest release by the Annie Minogue Band, composed of Nick Saya’s drums, Nunzio Signore’s guitar and backing vocals, Brian Karp’s bass, Rob Clores’s keyboard, spearheaded by Annie Minogue’s dashing voice and politically charged lyrics. ‘NOW!’ is a message of scathing blame to the state of politics in America, delivered via a rocking arrangement and a sublime mix. Regardless of how heavy the lyrics are, the mixing job on the single makes the listening experience a total breeze. ‘NOW!’ is a wonderful sounding song.

A stern, straightforward beat, complemented by a fittingly minimal bass part, both constitute the song’s driving rhythm section. On top, Minogue’s voice is supported by gorgeous adornments by Clores on the electronic keyboard, right alongside a terrifically balanced rhythm guitar part by Signore, both parts are wonderfully restrained and calculated, leaving ample space for Annie’s heady vocals and attention-demanding words. All in all, a mature arrangement that’s brilliantly executed by a wholly capable band.

Dripping with musicianship, the Annie Minogue Band and their latest single are both pleasures to behold. On my first foray into the world of the Annie Minogue Band I was left satisfied and hungry for more.

GINGE unveils her warm debut album ‘Playing Around’

0

On track to be one of the most exciting artists for the next wave of soul music in 2024, GINGE built a foundation with her EPs titled Belly and Bummer, receiving initial acclaim and booking slots at festivals. A bubbly blend of neo-soul, jazz and R&B has appeared across a colourful discography, the most recent addition, the new album Playing Around, was quickly added to sought-after tastemaker playlists and is popping up in the music press.

Playing Around is filled with GINGE’s personality, her writing cradles personal stories, bouncy grooves and sparkling production. There’s a whimsical child-like essence that GINGE embodies sonically, the nostalgic guitar tones, keys and twinkling synths setting out a tone that makes the album feel like a playground.

There’s still plenty of talent on show, however, with GINGE delivering astounding vocal performances balancing the eclectic influences and wrapping them together as the frontwoman. Most of the album is light, breezy and fun, but the moments of deeper-felt emotions are special and thoughtful, with romance emerging from a moment of joy.

The instrumentation has plenty of the aforementioned wistfulness, but there are also some gorgeous arrangements, knowing when to keep things simple flowing and when to expand out into swaying brass melodies and momentous vocal layers. The project shows signs of talent on the rise, and GINGE at her best, a unique 13-track to take into autumn.

GINGE explains,  “Making this album has really been a playground in itself. It feels like I combined all my previously released music into one poppy neo-soul bubble with some RnB as well. It has become a playful yet intimate exploration of any type of love and attachment. I used to make it all so heavy and now I just try to make it a bit lighter, fun and whimsical.”

Lámpara de aceite by PATRICIO ANABALON

0

Inspired greatly by the venerable Leonard Cohen, Patricio Anabalón‘s folk-pop song “Lámpara de Aceite” is a moving and beautifully detailed work. Published on September 20, 2024, this song reflects on themes of light, darkness, love, and the search for truth in a complex world, therefore highlighting Anabalón’s great emotional connection to his subject matter.

Combining folk, indie folk, and modern pop elements in the song creates a sound environment that is both nostalgic and modern. Structurally, the song moves in a classic folk-pop style, mixing verses with a recurrent chorus meant to provoke thought and emotional resonance. While adding current folk-pop production components that fit with modern indie trends, the general composition reminds one of Leonard Cohen’s early works, especially in the poetic language and gloomy undertones.

“Lámpara de Aceite” honors Leonard Cohen by distilling his modest melodies and thoughtful poetry. Anabalón clearly shows Cohen’s influence in how she combines a basic, but mysterious, musical arrangement with significant, existential themes. The pensive quality of the song and its subdued emotional build-up reflect musicians like Nick Drake and José González, whose folk-inspired soundscapes sometimes explore similar introspective areas. Still, Anabalón develops his style by including a warmth and intimacy that set his voice apart from his inspirations.

Anabalón’s folk roots define “Lámpara de Aceite” as having simple, graceful instruments. Lead by the keys, which gives the song a gentle, almost frail basis. This simplicity creates a meditative environment and lets the lyrical material front the stage. Though they contribute richness without overpowering the basic acoustic sound, light percussion, and sporadic strings The deliberate placement reflects Cohen’s austere style in which every instrument accentuates the emotional depth of the song.

The very expressive vocals of Anabalón convey warmth and sensitivity as well as fragility. His voice captures the sad but hopeful tone of the songs by being honest. His presentation follows the custom of folk balladeers, in which the emphasis is on emotional performance-based narrative rather than vocal virtuosity. His vocal tone helps listeners to get longing and reflective, therefore guiding them into the story.

“Lámpara de Aceite” is produced with outstanding clarity and restraint. The mix is simple enough to let every instrument breathe while maintaining Anabalón’s vocals and the lyrical meaning of the song front and center. Deep awareness of the song’s topics guides the production decisions, which give emotional connection top priority over complex effects or technical devices. This method fits Cohen’s minimalist production philosophy in which the emotional weight of the song is transmitted via simplicity and space.

Lyrically, “Lámpara de Aceite” explores the common theme of light and darkness in spiritual and philosophical inquiry. Drawing a connection between the flickering flame of an oil lamp and the brittle search for meaning in an uncertain world, the song asks listeners to consider the complexity of love and truth. This metaphor and the introspective tone of the song help “Lámpara de Aceite” to fit Cohen’s legacy of investigating spiritual and existential concerns via music. Though basic, the songs speak to a profound emotional truth that seems universal yet also personal.

The excellent homage to Leonard Cohen’s “Lámpara de Aceite” highlights Patricio Anabalón’s ability to combine great lyrics with subdued but expressive musicality. Together, the instruments, vocals, and production work of the song produce a contemplative and emotionally engaging listening experience. “Lámpara de Aceite” presents a moving meditation on life’s complexity, given with sincerity and grace, for those drawn to poetry, and introspective songwriting as well as for aficionados of folk music.

Suit Up by TRA4DUCE, SILAS1WOLF (FEAT. KINGTAEINTHISBITCH)

0

From the album Exodus From Babylon II: Return to Judea, TRA4DUCE, Silas1wolf, and KingTaeInThis Bitch’s song “Suit Up” offers a dynamic example of modern Hip-Hop, Rap, and Trap fusion. Published on September 14, 2024, this song captures the cooperative character of Northwest talent by combining unusual viewpoints into a potent auditory experience. The structure, influences, instrumentation, and topics of the song are broken out here:

Inspired mostly by producers like Metro Boomin or Southside, “Suit Up” boasts a basic trap structure, repeating hooks, aggressive verses, and a captivating instrumental. Still, it adopts a cinematic edge as every verse builds on the intensity of the one before it. Three separate sections to the song highlight the varied flows and lyrical ability of TRA4DUCE, KingTaeIn This Bitch, and Silas1wolf, each giving their unique vitality and viewpoint.

Supported by a powerful drum loop driving the intensity of the message, the production employs a “pied piper-esque” flute melody to give the music a haunting vibe. Particularly in songs like “Mask Off,” which use melodic parts to heighten the tension of the narrative, this mix of flute and trap beats reminds one of musicians like Future or even Kendrick Lamar.

“Suit Up” mostly uses the flute and drums to create a mesmerizing rhythm that propels the tune. As noted, the flute has a “pied piper” aspect, meaning a call to action, pushing listeners to “suit up” and get ready for war. Subtle layers of synths and bass provide mixed depth; the drum loop sustains the tune with a sense of urgency and tension. The simple approach to instrumentation lets the vocals take the front stage, therefore improving the lyrical quality and the whole meaning of the song.

Over the track, the vocals have dynamic and varied delivery. Opening with a hard-hitting verse, TRA4DUCE sets the tone with strong images and great vitality. His flow is intentional, every phrase spoken has an effect. Lyrically, he employs striking images to depict the challenges of life in a world where rent is sky-high and survival is under constant fight. Calling for resiliency and action, his remark, “Make a nigga want to suit up,” catches the core of the track.

With fast-fire punchlines and a sophisticated metaphor concerning MK Ultra, combining references to both Mortal Kombat and the notorious government mind-control program, KingTaeIn This Bitch’s verse raises the ante. This clever double entendre reminds me of layered wordplay-based musicians like Lil Wayne or Jay-Z.

With his trademark high-pitched ad-libs and catchy trigger phrases, Silas1wolf concludes the track by delivering unforgettable lines like, “Illuminate a light bearer when the darkness taints,” which give the tune some literary flair. His fluid yet forceful cadence highlights his range as a rapper.

Made by Smoke, the “Suit Up” production is first-rate. Appropriate for the idea of getting ready for battle, the powerful flute and drum loop evoke movement and urgency. While modest effects like reverb and delay give the track depth, the little but powerful usage of bass lets the vocals shine. Although Metro Boomin and Mike Will Made-It, known for their usage of melodic elements in trap rhythms, have an impact on the production, it adds a special twist to the flute melody, thereby creating a more ethereal, haunting vibe.

Lyrically, “Suit Up” is about preparation, fortitude, and rising to the challenge in a society always attempting to pull you down. The expression “suit up” is a metaphor for arming oneself against the demands and strains of life as well as a physical call to action. TRA4DUCE alludes to the requirement of endurance while also touching on financial difficulties and costly rent and referencing.

With a more symbolic overlay and combining political undertones with cultural references, KingTae In This Bitch’s poem His reference to MK Ultra—both as a Mortal Kombat homage and a hint to the government’s mind-control experiments—adds another layer of criticism of society manipulation and control.

Using bright and dark imagery to highlight the continuous struggle between good and evil, Silas1wolf’s poem finishes the song with an emphasis on inner strength and conquering adversity. His lines, “breaking walls and bending rules,” point to a rebellious attitude that defies social mores.

The striking song “Suit Up” mixes strong lyrical delivery with cinematic production. It distinguishes the trap genre by adding social commentary and more profound metaphorical meaning, therefore forcing the listener to interact with the music on several levels. TRA4DUCE, Silas1wolf, and KingTaeInThis Bitch have a flawless working relationship where every artist adds something special. Along with a call to action, the song considers the challenges and victories of modern civilization.

Berlin-based singer/songwriter, Allo.B released a powerful anthem titled “Pretty” that delves deeper beyond just looks. The track blends various types of pop including dark and indie pop, and it features the provocative lyrics with raspy vocals of Allo.B and the soft piano strums.

“My Music is a deeply personal project that reflects my own journey of self discovery and healing,” shared Allo.B. “It’s my way of sharing my story with the world. Allo.B has a long background in music, as she started playing the violin at the young age of six. It’s clear from her songwriting that she has a strong personality, and that her direction is towards setting stereotypical notions aside to make way for healthier points of view.

Ziggy Alberts’ “Where Does The Love Go?”

0

In the realm of indie folk, few artists manage to create a distinct sonic signature that resonates deep within the hearts of listeners. Ziggy Alberts, with his new single “Where Does The Love Go?” achieves just this, blending emotive lyricism with minimalist musicality that both soothes and stirs.

Released as a precursor to his forthcoming seventh studio album, *New Love*, slated for release in February 2025, Alberts offers a glimpse into the thematic and acoustic direction the album is likely to explore. “Where Does The Love Go?” is not just a song but an experience, wrapped in gentle guitars and the subtle intimacy of hand claps that feels like a heartbeat echoing through a quiet room.

The single starts with a plaintive guitar intro, setting a reflective mood that carries throughout the song. Alberts’ voice, raw and earnest, enters soon after, asking the poignant question posed in the title. The simplicity of the arrangement is deceptive, as it allows every strum of the guitar and clap of the hands to be felt more deeply, enhancing the song’s introspective nature.

Lyrically, Alberts delves into themes of loss, love, and the ephemeral nature of both. The chorus, “Where does the love go when our hearts have had enough? Does it disappear into the ether or transform into something tough?” is a lyrical hook that is both catchy and thought-provoking. It’s this kind of songwriting that has earned Alberts his critical acclaim, weaving philosophical ponderings with everyday emotions.

The production quality of the track is stellar. It’s clear that there’s a deliberate choice to keep things stripped back, which pays off by making each element of the song more impactful. The acoustic guitar carries a warm tone that complements Alberts’ vocal timbre, and the addition of hand claps provides a percussive element that is both organic and unobtrusive.

One of the standout features of the song is its bridge. Here, Alberts shifts the melody slightly, adding a subtle but effective change that reengages the listener. This section builds to a soft crescendo of emotion before settling back into the gentle rhythm of the verse, illustrating Alberts’ skill in song structure and dynamic control.

The accompanying music video, set to release on September 20, will likely add a visual layer to the song’s narrative. Given Alberts’ previous work, it can be expected to be a thoughtful portrayal that complements the song’s introspective nature.

In terms of audience reception, “Where Does The Love Go?” is poised to resonate well with both long-time fans of Alberts and newcomers. Its universal theme coupled with Alberts’ distinctive style makes it accessible yet profound. This track could easily be a standout on adult alternative playlists, appealing to listeners who appreciate the nuances of singer-songwriter craftsmanship.

Moreover, as a live performance piece, this song has the potential to create intimate moments that draw concert-goers in. With Alberts currently touring the U.S., attendees are likely in for a treat when this song is played live. The personal and connective nature of this single will undoubtedly shine in a live setting, creating a memorable experience for the audience.

In conclusion, Ziggy Alberts‘ “Where Does The Love Go?” is a beautifully crafted single that showcases his growth as an artist and hints at an exciting new direction in his upcoming album *New Love*. With its heartfelt lyrics, minimalist production, and emotional delivery, the song is a testament to Alberts’ ability to connect with and captivate his audience through music. It serves not only as a piece of art but as a piece of solace, asking a universal question that each listener may answer in their reflection. This single is a promising sign of what is to come from the talented Australian singer-songwriter.
