Album: Triumph by George Bolton

0

George Bolton’s “Triumph,” sometimes known as George Bolton’s Transcendental, is a mesmerizing investigation inside the electronic music genres, especially downtempo house, techno, trance, and EDM. Though it incorporates modern ideas, the album is an interesting trip back to the techno and party world of the early 1990s. Bolton goes back over his Techno/Trance years and absorbs the developments in the electronic music landscape since.

Complex layers of synthesizers define the tracks in Triumph; this is a recurring element on the album. George Bolton has mastery of synthesizers, producing rich textures entwined with hypnotic rhythms. Every song seems to develop, these tracks are meant to be both stand-alone works and part of a complete trip.

Triumph’s manufacture is deliberate and refined as well. From his Boston home studio, George Bolton, handling all synthesizer work and production, exhibits a strong awareness of sound design. He employs a variety of electronic instruments, including classic analog synthesizers, which despite modern production gives the record a warm, retro vibe. Rich sound patterns created by layered pads, arpeggiated synths, and pulsating bass lines Based on the album’s more experimental sections, Bolton also appears to be inspired by leftfield electronic subgenres and IDM (intelligent dance music).

Though Bolton’s work is largely on instrumental creation, any use of vocals in Triumph is limited and mostly consists of sampled voices. These vocals provide extra texture instead of a focal point so the listener may enjoy the instrumental soundscapes. The album captures ideas of the human condition and tenacity. The visual idea behind the artwork—Sisyphus pushing a boulder up the mountain—suggests a deeper philosophical undercurrent in the music: a contemplation on effort, endurance, and the ongoing search for achievement.

Although the whole album is a coherent trip over several tempos and moods, a few songs appeal to me. Combining old-school rave energy with modern production techniques, tracks that strongly tilt towards the techno and trance roots capture Bolton’s approach.

George Bolton recorded and produced the album right from his Boston-based home studio. Though it’s an individual production, the sound quality is excellent, which reflects Bolton’s commitment to his trade and experience in the field. Mastering guarantees that the tracks strike powerfully on a dance floor without losing any of their complex subtleties when listened to on headphones; the mixing is painstaking, and each part has space to breathe.

Bolton’s work is quite reminiscent of those realms of trance-like consciousness. His work appeals to a broad group of electronic music lovers since he can capture the core of trance while investigating downtempo and leftfield genres. This philosophical bent gives listeners an experience that is both emotional and reflective, therefore transforming the music from simple danceable to thought-provoking.

Triumph is a well-executed album in which George Bolton pushes his sound into uncharted areas while skilfully capturing the attitude of rave culture. The production is immaculate and immersive, with an eye on generating rhythmic depth. The fans of vintage techno, trance, and IDM will find plenty to value; the hypnotic flow and philosophical overtones of the album will pull in those new to the genre.

Girl Code by Edie Yvonne

0

At only 15 years old, Los Angeles-based singer/actress Edie Yvonne shows emotional maturity in her latest EP “Girl Code”, which was released the week she started high school! “Girl Code” is a confessional EP by a daring young artist who is not scared to explore her deepest sentiments and share them with the world.

Her syrupy sweet vocals radiate throughout the EP, which sound almost like a diary written in the form of music with elements of pop, rock, soul, and indie genres. With vibrant singles “2 U”and “Duh”, produced in collaboration with Nicky Swedin and Cormac Liotta, the songs’ sound is energetic and the lyrical content is personal and evocative.

Tracklist:

  • 15 (When I Leave)
  • Delusion
  • 2 U
  • Duh
  • Queen Bee
  • Girl Code

We dived deep into the first track and single “15 (When I Leave)” back in June and described it as a “passionate performance [that] draws the listener into the story, potentially triggering memories of their own teenage years.”

Despite the EP carrying a rock sound, “Queen Bee” takes an electronic dreamy-pop turn that has you in an illusive state. The oscillating keyboard sounds, along with echoing background vocals, makes you feel like you are daydreaming.

The collection of songs ends with “Girl Code” the title of the EP, which talks about an old friend lost due to pursuing the same love interest. The lyrics evoke emotions of betrayal in a heartbreaking vocal line. “When did dancing in the park turn into dancing around the truth? You’re just somebody I knew,” sings Yvonne.

Yvonne opened up her heart in “Girl Code” and let us into her world for an intimate journey that follows a teenager growing up into her adolescence; an impressive representation of Yvonne’s deepest darkest emotions spread out for the world to hear.

Album: Mind Games by La Hora Exacta

0

Spanish band La Hora Exacta released their debut album “Mind Games” that dabbles with more than one sound in a genre-bending voyage through the Mediterranean.

The project, based in San Sebastian, travels from alternative rock pop, to dark wave, psychedelic, and beyond. Each of the 13 songs on the album tells a different story that is enlightening to the ears – even if you don’t understand Spanish.

Tracklist:

  • Hojas Blancas
  • Maybe It is Time to Say Farewell
  • Desistir o Resistir
  • Ay Perdon (Pago y Apago)
  • La Hora Exacta
  • El Reconocimiento
  • En los Bajos Fondos
  • Acusar sin Perdonar
  • Mind Games
  • Maybe You Get Lucky Too
  • Serpientes Que Nunca Muerden
  • Sigo por Aqui
  • Uno a Cero

“La Hora Exacta” track, named after the band, opens up with sinister whispers that send chills down your spine, before the ethereal vocals of the female vocalist tells you a bedtime story accompanied by the soft piano strums, quirky synths, and catchy percussion in the background.

As for the title of the album, “Mind Games” song kicks off with vocals in the higher register that tickles your ears, with the bold piano tunes carrying the vocal line to an almost chatty-like conversation between two people talking over each other. You feel like you’re eavesdropping on a personal discussion as the song reaches its peak in the middle of it and shifts gears onto a completely different sound!

“La Hora Exacta was born out of the idea of creating a “book of life”,” shared the band. “… and “Mind Games” is  the result of more than three years of creative work, of making new versions of the  songs, over and over again, until that in the end we arrived at a final result, which for us  represents something new, a new way of understanding music, that does not follow  conventional rules or predetermined ways.

All in all, it’s pleasant hearing all the quirky vocals echoing together in unity on tracks like “Maybe You Get Lucky Too,” and the rock vibes of “Maybe It is Time to Say Farewell.” The listening experience can be different from one person to the other, some might view the music as a fantasy, and others can feel like they’re living a nightmare instead!

Turning heads wherever she goes, Leiyah’s always ready to take the next step towards songwriting stardom.

The artist’s latest single ‘NEVER LIKED YOU ANYWAY’ is self-assured soarer, it’s a story from Leiyah’s experience that she brings to lyrics we can all relate to.

The verses build subtle tension, feeling ready to burst with emotion as a heartfelt, ballad-esque performance pours from the vocal. The plucky guitars and shimmering synths are then joined by a rhythmic undertone and pumping drums, exploding into the chorus like a firework of self-realisation and fulfilment.

The pain pours over into a genuine outburst of passion, finding her ground and staying there, forcing the antagonist to understand her position finally. Even with all this momentousness, Leiyah still finds a place to create a huge, singalong pop banger, the chorus swirling around in your head long after the final note.

Luchi unveils romantic track ‘Like This’

0

Luchi launched his career in 2017 with ‘Don’t Look Back’ immediately cruising to top spots on iTunes singer-songwriter charts and cementing himself as a warm and impressive lyricist. Continuing to bring personal experience and training from the industry’s best to his writing, from Nashville to Santorini, his recent single ‘Web Of Lies’ was another chart-topper, an artist who deserves the hype no doubt.

Luchi’s latest single ‘Like This’ is a beautiful love-drenched anthem. Able to bring himself into his lyricism as a hopeless romantic finally on track to success. Vocally shining throughout, Luchi’s performance is enticing, the honesty and the genuine authenticity are palpable and addictive. The art of songwriting that is rooted in dictating the brightest moments of humanity with such relatability, Luchi brings optimism, assurance and thoughtfulness. The glowing sounds of the synths, the drums and the piano make this a pop anthem, and it’s fantastic to see Luchi flourish in his confidence and artistry.

Luchi explains, “The song focuses on that excitement at the start of a relationship where you are falling in love and feel like you want to spend all your time talking to this person. I am fiercely independent and love my alone time, but in this situation I was realizing that I was on my own and wanting to still be with them. I wrote this song just with an acoustic guitar sound and with my producer Chris Stagg, we worked on quite a few different ways to present the song and different sounds but then landed on the sound you hear now.”

Sungaze emerge with otherworldly alt-rock in self-titled third album

0

Written by duo Ian Hilvert and Ivory Snow and performed by a full six-piece live, Sungaze is a project of musical artistry, a true passion for creativity. Untethered to a singular influence, the band’s constantly evolving sound finds its centre in sounds of otherworldliness and ethereality. Releasing ‘Light in All of It’ and ‘This Dream’ in 2019 and 2021 respectively, their most recent sonic exploration arises with their third album, the eponymous ‘Sungaze’.

Throughout the project, they dive into alternative rock with a new space-filling goal for the sound. Despite the roar of effect-drenched distorted guitars and chest-thumping drums on tracks like ‘Not Mine To Hold’ and ‘So Light’, the vocals remain steady and angelic, delightfully in control of the meticulously arranged reverberating chaos beneath them.

‘Daisy In The Wind’, is tinted with nostalgia, the lead guitar embracing an Americana-vibe, giving it a folksy, traditional flow that is refined into an anthemic rock song. ‘Freer Than I Could Be’ evokes the peak of their more distant feel. Pulled back, slow and swaying, the delays and reverb melt instruments and vocals together, the molten product filled with sparkling frequencies.

Ferociously unique throughout, Sungaze are unapologetically reflective and always willing to let the soundscape lead them forward.

Sungaze explains the thematic roots of the album, “We like to think of this album as a “coming of age” album. The songs are more personal and direct than we’ve written in the past, and each track on this album details pretty major life themes that have been present for us in the past few years. And as is often displayed in coming of age stories, there was an element of soul-searching and a level of self-acceptance that needed to happen in order for this album to even exist at all.”

Sofia Menguita shares her story with ‘Growing Pains’ EP

0

Adelaide-based folk-pop rising star Sofia Menguita revealed her first EP at just fourteen years old, and her songwriting maturity in the years since is fascinating to watch. Landing support slots alongside Jamie Lena and Aleksiah, and booked to play Marsenfest and WOMADelaide in the autumn, her raw, honest songwriting continues to entice new fans across the industry.

Her latest EP ‘Growing Pains’ is the story of growing up, and navigating the nuances of life when each person experiences such different surroundings. The five-track is very personal, Sofia’s folky aesthetic of acoustic guitars and subtle climaxes lending itself to a natural humanity.

Melodically, the project doesn’t always follow expectations, introducing new instrumentation, or jumping to a sudden new chord. This unpredictability is leveraged into a metaphor for growing up, defying genre boxes with heartfelt vocal peaks and moments of distorted ethereality.

Sofia shares, “This record was written about navigating through relationships and adversity as a young, father-less, teenage girl. It is a re-introduction to the music scene, authentic to who I am and how I feel. I was inspired by the production of Pinegrove’s “Skylight”, and the delicate-ness of “Sling” by Clairo. I had the pleasure of working on it with my partner, Matthew Burgess, who also produced the single “Everyone I’ve Ever Loved”. He understood and took care of my vision, so it’s safe to say that this is my most favourite project to date”

EP: Jersey Girls by Super Saiyan Jay and King Dev

0

Recorded in the vibrant West Palm Beach, Florida, Jersey Girls is a recently released EP by artists Super Saiyan Jay and King Dev. It has an unparalleled good and positive vibe to it. It is almost a reflection of the fun and good times you would have at a Jersey Club, only better!

The tracks on this album are skillfully woven together to tell their own unique stories, each one capturing a different side or perception of love, desire, and self-reflection. The sequence is carefully crafted, with each song flowing naturally into the next, creating a cohesive narrative that draws you in from the first note.

Dirty Diana, and nope not that of Michael Jackson, kicks off the journey with a story of temptation and allure. It is about that girl you so desperately want to approach but you are absolutely sure that she does not have the best of intentions for you, and not surprisingly, this is actually what makes the chase fun. We then have Back to the Crib, which continues the narrative but it is taken into a more intimate setting. It is about that pretty girl whom you worked pretty hard to come over and now you get to enjoy each other’s energy, in a positive way. Then the tone is shifted a bit with Put Love First, a reflection song, reminding us that even after hardship, love and optimism prevail. “Jersey Girl” offers heartfelt appreciation, showcasing the reasons behind your admiration for someone special which is often showcased through actions rather than just talk. Finally, “Beautiful Soul” closes the project on a soulful note, emphasizing that true beauty lies within, highlighting the deep and genuine connection and affection that can exist between two people.

Jersey Girl, the EP, is not only a feel good kind of release. The music production also gives it a unique sound and overall atmosphere. The instrumentation might be similar in most of the tracks, yet, each song has its own character and vibe but they all still fit together perfectly. Giving the listener almost 14 minutes of good summery and light vibes which you can’t just get enough of. So, just as the artist has stated: “summer is still here so let’s finish it off in style!”

Mad About You by Frank Joshua

0

THIS IS INDEED A FEEL-GOOD KIND OF SONG!

Are you feeling inexplicably high and happy? Maybe a little too energized and excited? Wait, are you feeling butterflies? My friend, you are either falling in love with someone new or simply in love with this exquisite feel-good release, Mad About You by Frank Joshua.

Just like love, the genius of this song lies in its complex simplicity. I mean, have you ever been asked what love is? Can we all agree on a definition for it? I absolutely doubt it. Every person has their own interpretation, shaped by their experiences and expectations. But one thing we can all agree on is that love is an unexplainably magical and captivating experience—a feeling that can leave you speechless and irrationally happy. You can feel love, but explaining it is incredibly hard, no matter how many times you try.

Mad About You sweeps you into a world where love takes over, making the everyday fade into the background. You are simply happy! The song’s gentle acoustic guitar riff sets the tone, flowing effortlessly alongside heartfelt male vocals that carry the lyrics with fun, lightness, and sincerity. There’s an innocence to this release that perfectly reflects the purity of true love. Each word subtly reminds you of the joy and comfort love can bring, while the steady yet soothing drums create a pulse that mirrors the calm yet intense emotions of being lost in thoughts of someone special.

Since its release, Mad About You has been sweeping the internet, reaching a growing audience of listeners who crave authentic, thoughtful, and chill music. Being Frank’s 38th release since December 2020, this track marks a key moment in his artistic journey, set to be part of his upcoming fourth album in 2025. With its mellow, introspective vibe, it would fit seamlessly into Spotify’s official singer-songwriter playlists or any collection of deep, reflective tunes. So get ready everyone—there’s some truly good music that is on the way!
