Tell ‘Em by Terry Blade

0

Terry Blade’s latest single, Tell ’Em, is a testament to the transformative power of simplicity. Stripping the blues to its bare essentials, a single voice and a lone guitar, Blade reimagines the genre with a focus on storytelling and emotional authenticity. This isn’t just music; it’s a call to action, a soulful plea wrapped in raw, unvarnished artistry.

From the first strum, Blade’s guitar work sets a deliberate, intimate tone, weaving space and sound together with the kind of finesse that feels both timeless and groundbreaking. But it’s his voice: unfiltered, deeply resonant, and brimming with conviction that takes center stage. Each lyric feels intentional, each note a carefully crafted moment that invites listeners to reflect, connect, and feel.

What shines through Tell ’Em is Blade’s ability to draw from the rich traditions of the blues while making the genre his own. The track carries echoes of legends like BB King and Nina Simone, yet it isn’t tied to nostalgia. Instead, Blade uses the foundational elements of the genre to craft something unapologetically modern, a sound that bridges the gap between history and innovation.

The lyrics are bold and purposeful, addressing the struggles of marginalized communities with a sense of urgency and hope. Blade doesn’t shy away from hard truths, instead offering a message of resilience and defiance: a reminder to “stay strong,” to “watch your back,” and to continue fighting for freedom. His words resonate like a rallying cry, delivered with a quiet intensity that lingers long after the song ends.

Tell ’Em isn’t flashy or overproduced, but that’s exactly what makes it so powerful. It’s proof that music doesn’t need elaborate arrangements or grand theatrics to leave an indelible mark. With just a guitar and his voice, Terry Blade breathes new life into the blues, showing that less truly can be more.

For anyone searching for music that inspires as much as it moves, Tell ’Em is unmissable; a stirring blend of vulnerability and strength, tradition and evolution, simplicity and depth. It’s not just a song; it’s a moment, and one that demands to be heard!

99 Fire by Frank Richman

0

Yes, you read it right: BANANAS! Frank Richman, the enigmatic artist shrouded in mystery, has managed to fuse funk, soul, Americana, and a whole lot of groove into 99 Fire, a track as surreal as it is electrifying. Featuring bananas in shades (you should get used to reading this, we know)  jamming out on saxophones, guitars, and drums, the music video alone sets the stage for a funky fever dream that perfectly complements Richman’s infectious sound.

At its core, 99 Fire is an unstoppable anthem of joy, motion, and unbridled energy. From the sizzling guitar riff that opens the song to the pounding, over-caffeinated drumbeats that drive it forward, this track doesn’t just play; it ignites. Richman’s raspy yet emotive voice feels like it’s been forged in flames, delivering lyrics like, “Risin’ and risin’, higher and higher, stronger and stronger, 99 fire,” with both absolute energy and power.

The production is a masterclass in captivating sounds and groove. The bassline rumbles like an earthquake, grounding the song even as it threatens to burst with raw intensity. The guitar solo in the middle feels like sparks flying off a blazing engine, and even the brief moments of silence are loaded with tension, pulling you deeper into the groove before thrusting you back into the firestorm.

And then there are the bananas. Yes, bananas (you should’ve gotten used to this by now). Whether they’re wielding saxophones or strumming guitars, their surreal presence in the music video perfectly mirrors the playful absurdity of Richman’s artistry. Are they a metaphor? A statement? Or simply a hilarious, funky twist? That’s for you to decide, but one thing is certain: they’re unforgettable.

Despite the mystery surrounding Frank Richman’s identity, one thing is clear: his star is rising, and it’s glowing bright (and yellow). With 99 Fire already gaining international radio play, Richman proves he’s here to set the world ablaze, one funky banana jam at a time!

Behind the name and the music is Canadian singer-songwriter Dany Horovitz, known for his ability to captivate audiences with memorable melodies and vivid storytelling. Dany‘s newest project, Way About You, collects his singles to date, including the album’s title track “Way About You” – a vibrant, banjo-infused pop song showcasing his evolution as an artist.

Produced around an infectious riff reminiscent of Avicii’s “Wake Me Up,” “Way About You” hooks listeners from the start with its joyful banjo, catchy melody, and beautiful harmonies at the chorus. The song began as a casual “throwaway” piece but soon became a standout track thanks to the fresh ears of Dany‘s producer, Calvin Hartwick. After a college engineering session where the track was played live, Calvin insisted it had to be recorded and brought in composer Matthew O’Halloran as a co-producer.. Now, it’s one of Dany‘s favorite songs.

Collaborators on “Way About You” include Sean Royle, a celebrated Toronto studio musician and arranger, and Eric Vanier, whose stellar drumming brought energy to the track. The banjo, played by Sean Royle, added a unique and irresistible layer that completed the song’s sound.

I consider myself a storyteller first and foremost, and in this song, I explore the mysterious “Way About You” through endless, cosmic metaphors. From the first note, this track puts a smile on my face, and I hope it does the same for listeners. – Dany Horovitz

From the opening verse, Sarantos reminds listeners that life’s twists and turns may challenge them, but the ultimate source of strength comes from within.

HOLD ON by CRYME

0

HOLD ON is an excellent collection of remixes to a synthetic dance anthem. CRYME’s ‘HOLD ON’ features an eclectic blend of elements that incorporate dance, rave, electronica, and soul in a stunning fusion of worlds that’s masterfully executed.

German artist CRYME is based in Berlin, where his musical roots are deep within its underground techno scene. With a style that’s elegantly paced with a moderate tempo and an engaging rhythm on ‘HOLD ON’, CRYME and his collaborators deliver a rich collection of guises to the track, already a terrific techno release. CINTHIE, Obscure Shape, Lydia Eisenblatter, and Volpe all deliver massively different treatments to the original, each with a distinct sound and attitude that made each piece outstanding in its own right.

The original’s well-paced groove and deep kick sound, alongside the subdued synth stabs and astoundingly cool soul vocal chops, masterfully sampled to blend in really well with the cold, electronic backdrop, all make up a track that’s delicious and balanced. CINTHIE’s treatment features a more dynamic synth soundscape with more layers, each one prominent and important in the mix. The beat and its incorporation of lively claps takes this remix somewhere completely distant from the original, while the retained soul vocal samples keep us firmly rooted in the track’s original, crisp fusion of styles.

Obscure Shapes’ hectic, percussion-led treatment leans heavily towards a more industrial and acidic approach. The quicker tempo and more processed vocal samples also remove us further from the elegant original to a more dramatic and unpredictable sound that’s reminiscent of the madness of Prodigy. Lydia Eisenblatter’s treatment tones the sound down and back to something similar to CRYME’s original, with a brooding subbass and a leering rhythm part for an atmosphere that’s ominous, and the dissonant synth interludes that drip with their acid jazz chord sequences introduce a sound found nowhere else on the EP. Of the 5 treatments, Lydia Eisenblatter’s remix might be the most engaging for the larger portion of the audience, with its exciting mix of styles and rhythms. Volpe’s treatment is the smoothest. Led by an elegant sub bass sound adorned by creamy synth stabs, Volpe’s remix is the most streamlined and perhaps the most suited for the dance floor.

HOLD ON is an exciting collection of techno tracks that can each easily pass as a distinct release standing on its own feet. A talented group of collaborators and a superb techno release.

The song and the accompanying clip are equally dark and are just as tastefully done. The direction by filmmaker Katya Ganfeld is masterful and results in a visually cohesive experience that’s varied in its locations and color schemes, but consistent to the soul of the peppy, quirky darkness of the song.

On top, the intricate and challenging vocal delivery by Salt Ashes displays her as a capable vocalist, while the moving composition and melodic lines display her as a talented songwriter. ‘Bad Things Right’ is nothing if not an addictive piece of pop music that can keep you hooked for a dozen or so listens.
