Album: Town Line by Owen Young

EXACTLY HOW AN AMERICANA EP SHOULD SOUND LIKE!

Owen Young’s Town Line EP perfectly embodies the spirit of Americana, delivering an emotional journey through life’s moments of love, loss, and resilience. As the second part of his Muddy River album, this eight-song collection weaves personal stories with universal themes, grounded in the rural landscapes of Southern Ontario.

The EP opens with “In Everything I Do,” a heartfelt ode to love and nature. Its warm instrumentation and soothing harmonies immediately set the tone for a deeply human and reflective musical experience. This is the sound of Americana at its finest simple, honest, and profoundly moving.

“I Can’t Believe” follows with a tender meditation on enduring love, exploring the bittersweet passage of time. Young’s earnest vocals and nostalgic lyricism shine against the song’s understated rhythm, creating a quiet yet powerful connection to listeners.

“Moon on the Rise” brings a touch of melancholy and introspection, with vivid imagery of storms and hope, symbolizing life’s uncertainties. Its poignant lyricism and reflective tone make it one of the EP’s standout moments, resonating long after the music fades.

The tempo picks up with “Walk Down the Lane,” a lively story of generational love and the enduring spirit of rural life. Its storytelling charm and upbeat energy create a refreshing contrast to the earlier tracks. Likewise, the duet “We’ll Go Sailing” adds a layer of wistful beauty, with Tia McGraff’s ethereal vocals perfectly complementing Young’s, as they sing of shared dreams and fleeting moments.

“Old Muddy River” is a true Americana gem, its imagery of weathered porches and flowing rivers evoking timelessness and connection to the natural world. This track underscores the EP’s overarching theme of renewal, celebrating the power of place and memory in shaping identity.

Adding a rustic touch, “Straight Rye Whiskey” offers a playful yet poignant take on life’s imperfections. Its stripped-down arrangement, paired with Young’s raw vocal delivery, feels like an intimate fireside confession, unpolished and undeniably real.

The EP closes with “Ontario Home,” a hymn-like ode to roots and belonging. Written years before the rest of the album, it feels like the perfect conclusion, drawing together the themes of time, place, and identity that run throughout Town Line. Young’s voice carries a deep sense of yearning and gratitude, leaving listeners with a hopeful and lasting impression.

Owen Young’s Town Line is the epitome of Americana done right: authentic, heartfelt, and timeless. Its mix of rich storytelling, evocative imagery, and deeply human emotions creates an experience that feels both personal and universal. If you’re looking for an EP that encapsulates the heart of Americana, Town Line is exactly how it should sound!

The Beatroot Road Unveil Eclectic Sophomore Single “It’s a Laugh in the West” – Out November 22

0

The Beatroot Road continue to joyfully commune with their own eclectic and musically daring muse on their intoxicating and thematically poignant sophomore single “It’s a Laugh in the West”, out November 22nd on digital platforms. An ambitious multi-genre collective spearheaded by Mark Russell and Hazel Fairbairn, the scope and influence of this alternative and world music fusion project continues to widen due to the wide open minds involved.

“This song is an irony within an irony. There is something wrong and twisted in the life that we live in the west; I don’t know what the answer is, but music is a medicine that can always be relied on to blow the confusion away, at least for a while.”
Written by Demmy James and Neil Harris with ‘Your Dinner’ for the 1980s, it’s now 40 years later and the message is still valid, which is curious allowing for all the changes that have happened since then. It started out as a jangly afro reggae song that somewhere along the way got accidentally hi-jacked by some jazz horns. These things happen.

Produced by Mark Russell, vocals by Sophie Smith & The Trueheart choir, and tenor sax from Ian Putz. Hazel Fairbairn plays rockabilly fiddle, with chops and slides. The bodhran based rhythm section, horn arrangements and other instruments are by Mark.
