With tears welling up in our eyes from the emotions that “Surge Fabularum” (Rise of Legends) evokes, the neo-classical tune by composer/singer/songwriter Dell Johnston is a masterpiece of climaxing passion.

The song opens with a choir chanting, a strong start for sure, accompanied by the magnificent sound of horns, then it takes you through a movie-like journey that is fit for something along the lines of Gladiator or 300.

With 15 years under his belt, Johnston composed, recorded and mastered the 9th track “Surge Fabularum” (Rise of Legends) from his album “Redemptio” (yes, it’s missing an “n” at the end) at his home studio. Impressive? Indeed.

When I start on a particular piece,” shares Johnston. “I will literally pray for guidance. I truly believe I am a vessel. While not necessarily very talented, I credit a higher power for the end product. Once I start, the music flows through me and the result is what you hear.”

He credits musical giants such as Hanz Zimmer, John Williams, Danny Elfman, and Michael Giacchino as a few of his inspirational role models. The sound of his track “Surge Fabularum” (Rise of Legends) comes as no surprise considering he looks up to those who create incredible movie scores, and this one comes no short of sounding like a soundtrack to a fight scene!

I never know what direction I will go when I start the creation process. Once it starts, the inspiration never stops until I am done,” concluded Johnston.
