For different reasons, some fall into toxic relationships where their partners manipulate, take advantage, and emotionally abuse them. When you know your self-worth and have self-awareness, only then do you try to break free. The emerging artist, Connor Terrones, is covering this kind of relationship in his single. “What Can I Do?”
Speaking of self-awareness, the Denver, Colorado-based singer/songwriter, Connor Terrones, has finally decided to step out of the shadow of being a sideman for many Colorado acts and use his talents to make his own original music. “What Can I Do?” is his first single, featuring Julian Cary and Roy Matz.
“What Can I Do?” has a smooth fusion of R&B, Soul, and Hip-Hop. It’s driven by synth, and while the electronic elements are noticeable and add an upbeat touch, the overall ambiance is rather soothing. The vocals have a bitter tone to convey the pain, but it goes easy on you with its delicate lines. I didn’t see a Rap verse coming, but it surely added depth to the song and enhanced the mood.
The arrangement makes the song grow on you and delivers the sensations of the song on its own. The lyrics open your wounds if you’ve ever been in this kind of relationship and convey the feeling of being trapped and not knowing your way out. Lines like: “What can I do when you try to lock me up and throw away the key. Now I wonder, am I really free?” Paint a picture of the abusive relationship.
There’s no denying that Connor Terrones is a talented musician who deserves to be followed to see how he evolves and what else he has to offer.
