They say Massive Attack have been on the phone with Bonobo discussing this music that sounds like the perfect mix between them, and they’re both fine with it, as they should be because it’s a great song.
“Ghosts” is a single from Matthew Scott Ragnald’s latest EP, released in 2022. A brooding, slow-tempo, dark, and alluring trip of screamy synths and boomy sub-bass. Matthew had massive success at the start of the millennium with his band Nelo and is currently rediscovering his musical identity with this offering.
The song is filled with eerie fluttering samples vocals that do sound like floating specters, and a chord progression that’s easy to anticipate. The vocal melodies, which sit low in the register, are satisfying and long, showing effort and intention in composition. A number of synth solos also feature, sounding stabby and harsh at some points, creamy and expansive at others. A great mix of drums also helps propel the general feel of this song to a very elegantly produced one with great value and attention to detail.
Carrying your influences with pride will always be a mark of a brave and passionate artist, not willing to shy away from where his heart truly lies. Now, Matthew never stated any influences, so I’m assuming here based on the resemblance. But all in all, a solid, enjoyable tune that’s ready to drive you down the empty city streets.
