Jerry Jean and Nicole Zuraitis share soaring single ‘Lean In’

0

A versatile performer, Jerry Jean has graced a slew of iconic venues, appearing on MTV Unplugged and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and delivered alongside the likes of Florence + The Machine and Boyz II Men, showcasing a broad musical talent.

Based in New York City, the artist is award-winning, and his multi-faceted creativity is stretching across musical roles. With music spanning from intimate to epic, he is steadily leading audiences to a second full-length album after his debut explored the search for a home in a chaotic modern world, receiving honours at The Hollywood Music in Media Awards and the Global Music Awards.

For his latest release, Jerry Jean unveils the soulful grooves of ‘Lean In’. The first moments build a soundscape of rhythmic guitars, grooving bass lines and tight drum kit movement. This atmosphere quickly grows, its soulful tendencies bursting into disco strings, melodic saxophone and gospel vocal layers. The verse from Nicole Zuraitis feeds into this sense of power, her voice soaring through the observational themes, Jerry’s return to the melody initiating a bright duet as the instrumentation continues to explode with vibrant colour. The sax screams, the keys hit, and the drums unveil high-energy fills, but the vocals still take the cake for amazing performances.

Jerry comments on the single, ”I wrote Lean In as a reminder to be fully present in whichever stage of life you’re in. To inhabit the now and not dwell on the past or the future. Life’s incredibly dynamic when you’re committed to the now, and I tried to capture this vibrancy with Lean In.”

Shannon Tehya unveils final album teaser ‘Bitter Boys’

0

Shannon Tehya lights a path ahead of her, her positivity and hope shining through music that provides commentary on the world around her. A self-professed ‘soft girl pop’, allows her to lean into her folk roots, commanding performances from an acoustic stage, a melting pot for the dreamy. As her debut album emerges, Shannon laments the woes of a broken heart and pushes through the trials she faces as a woman. Starting the year as she means to go on, Shannon goes from strength to strength.

Shannon Tehya‘s ‘Bitter Boys’ has been released as the final stepping stone towards her album Tangled String. Shannon’s voice is soft, delicate, and vulnerable, but never weak, the strength in her words around broken men perpetuating a cycle of poor values. The speech comes off as purposeful, morphing from what could be seen as a poem of complaint into a narrative of hope and progression. It’s even more impressive that Shannon delivers these thoughts over a sparse instrumental arrangement, the piano and electric guitar intricately designed to light up the music with a subtle bounce or roaring distortion.

Shannon explains, “Bitter Boys is a satirical letter to all the men who have ever tried to break my spirit. I started dancing in a strip club when I was 18 years old. In a weird way, that choice saved my life. However, it also exposed me to a lot of really unwell people and toxic masculine energy, which is what this song speaks to.”

Luchi shares breakup banger ‘Web Of Lies’

0

Growing up in Glasgow alongside an Italian family, Luchi wrote songs from his bedroom, recording his material at the age of sixteen. He would go on to debut at No.9 on the iTunes Singer/Songwriter Charts, with his third single reaching No.2. Over his career, 15 of his singles have since hit the iTunes top 10.

In 2021 Luchi worked with Stargate and their team at the Los Angeles Academy for Artists & Music Production, being mentored by industry giants like Ne-Yo, Charli XCX, Justin Tranter, and Emily Warren. He describes songwriting as “free therapy’, his music infused with personal experiences to create honest lyrics. With his soulful voice and mature style, Luchi is poised to make a significant impact in the music industry.

Luchi‘s ‘Web Of Lies’ sets the tone, a blend of his ballad, and powerful singing voice with dark and plucky pop arrangements. The airy vocal chops ring out far beyond the speakers, creating an almost eerie sense of emotion, a creeping mist of pain attempting to end Luchi‘s boundless hopefulness. His lyricism is poetic, painting a vivid picutre of his thoughts, all the internal conflict he experiences, bursting out as an accusatory and combative performance against the antagonist.

Luchi explains, ”So I wrote “Web Of Lies” last year after a pretty bad breakup, which is the story of my life. Thank god for songwriting as it’s saved me from many a bad breakup. It was a relationship built on so many lies and that inspired the title of the song because one lie led to another and he had spun a web so thick that I don’t know how he kept track. Well he couldn’t and that’s how I worked it out but we digress. The song opens with how you fall into the trap as I am an over sharer and often will tell you my life story after only knowing you 5 minutes but that’s great for a narcissist who will then use that to play on all your insecurities. It weaves through all the games and manipulation sadly a lot of us experience in relationships and as the song goes on, the power builds up which I love and you finally say enough is enough and walk away from a toxic situation.

The song plays on the concept of karma and I love that. It feels like you’re almost being haunted with all the backing vocals and adlibs coming from all different angles. I’m not one of those people who breaks up with someone and wants revenge for the things they done, I leave that up to the universe to do onto them what they have done, I mean I will write a song about it but that’s my therapy. The song is a bit darker in vibe to the stuff I have been releasing recently and I like that it shows a different side to my music. I think it suits the song to be a bit more edgy and harder as it was actually written as a piano ballad and was a lot more vulnerable sounding but when I got together with my producer Chris Stagg, we just went for it and I love what we came out with. After a little 6 month hiatus, I think it’s the perfect way to reintroduce myself to my audience and sets up what I have to come for the rest of the year music wise experimenting with different sounds and styles while still keeping it pop.”

VALERIE shines in the angelic ‘Havana Nights’

0

Hailing from Miami, and fresh from an exciting debut album that showcased a sound filled with thoughtfulness and cinema, VALERIE, a singer-songwriter since her early childhood, brings an unfiltered, creative authenticity to her craft.  VALERIE’s lack of formal musical training is, in her eyes, a boon to her creativity, allowing her to defy conventions and experiment freely with sound and narrative.

VALERIE‘s new single ‘Havana Nights’ is a rich tour of multiple genres, her sound seems to transcend the influences it lies on, showcasing a different side to her music with sprinkles of the foundations heard in her debut album. The Latin bounce, forward-moving percussion and bouncy piano melodies all come together to create a vibrant scene, you can feel the hustle, the warmth, the sun, each moment a blessing of audio. The trumpets blow the flutes swaying, and every instrument is on a journey of its own, culminating to support a passionate vocal performance that holds an angelic presence.

VALERIE comments, “In 1980, my grandfather risked everything to bring his family to the United States, boarding a small ship during the Mariel boatlift with my grandmother, my mother, and my uncle. Before they faced the seas, he spoke these words to his family: “We’re going on a journey that will be difficult. No matter what happens, don’t cry. You have to be brave.”

43 years later, he faced the most difficult and universal trial — the journey from this life to the next. I wanted to write him a song that communicated my gratitude for everything he had given me without dampening his spirits. I wanted the song to echo that message he gave his family 43 years ago: “Ahora no llores.”

On May 15, 2024, on what would have been his 72nd birthday, I released “Havana Nights.” When you listen, you’ll get to hear about his journey and the legacy he left behind.”

Keekai releases light-filled single ‘Thunder’

0

The moniker of Keekai is worn by Robert Sy, a queer Filipinx singer and songwriter. Fearless expression, energy, heartbreak and acceptance are key to his powerhouse R&B style, weaving emotion within his tales of unspoken woes. Making his way to the status of the idols that came before him, his sound is a constantly evolving excitement.

Keekai‘s new single ‘Thunder’ is ethereal from the first moment, the subtle pulses of the synth pad and dreamlike arpeggios opening up a world of pensive vocal poetry. The notes emerge from Keekai, drenched in a passion he cannot contain, steadily flourishing into a brighter light amongst the haze. The kicks cut through some prominently, and the electronic arrangements constantly grow, but neither are able to cover the innate power of Keekai’s melodies, fighting back with a growing backdrop of harmony, reaching a utopian climax of emotion and tonality before falling away once again.

On his upcoming EP, Keekai shares, “This EP coexists with trauma and love. It is fabulous, broken, funny, triumphant. All the in-betweens. At once, lost in the understanding of love, but now finding power in its grand capacity to love. To be able to exist in these two modes and to find power in them is what makes this new iteration of my music so alluring and true. It is intentional in its practice of self-love and the romance of others. It is a voice that giggles, swoons, begs, cries, and yearns. A voice that wants love and is surrounded by it.”

Lara Taubman Unveils Transformative New Album ‘The Gospel of Getting Free,’ Out June 21

0

After some major transformative work on herself, indie americana singer/songwriter Lara Taubman has produced a new album in her usual style but with a whole new twist. The Gospel of Getting Free, which will release June 21st, tells her story from a renewed, refreshed and positive perspective.

My new album, ‘The Gospel of Getting Free,’ has been like a ship on which I can finally sail home. I see only now that my three albums are primers that guide me out of my own complex trauma to become my true self.

As a New York city die hard, Taubman started her work in the arts as a visual artist and critic. After a period in the wilds of Montana, she was inspired to start creating music, drawing on her passion for artists like Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, David Byrne and dozens of others as well as her bluegrass-fed childhood in coal country in Virginia. She soon created a style of americana and gospel-inspired folk that brought all her inspirations together.

Taubman began writing music in 2015 and after honing her craft and arriving on her sound, released her first album, Revelation in 2020. With a distinctive voice that’s equal parts Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell and a storytelling ability that rivals both, Taubman also found her audience with this goosebump-inducing release. Her star continued rising with the help of producer Steven Williams, and she released two more albums and a handful of single in rapid succession between 2022 and late 2023.

From the americana, soul, bluegrass and junkyard country of Revelation to the bluesy soul and classic folk of Blind Spot to the Indie gospel of Ol’ Kentucky Road, it’s clear that the central theme of Taubman’s work has been of a yearning to grow and be free from trauma and pain. Especially, in Ol’ Kentucky Road, that theme is clearly spoken and Taubman sings it with so much wanting in songs like “Come to Me,” that listeners will find themselves urging her on, rooting for her.

That need for emotional freedom and true joy is, by Taubman’s own admission, where fans will find her in The Gospel of Getting Free.

The same ideas that drove me to write the songs for ‘The Gospel of Getting Free’ also helped me come up with the songs for the first two albums. What distinguishes this album from the last two are two things. First, I feel more mentally healthy than I ever have. Last summer I began working with somatic therapy for trauma and it changed my life quickly. I immediately wanted more hope in the music as expressed in the songs “The Reason I Was Born” and “Sing Your Song.” Even the songs that are about dark matters like addiction (“Sugar”) and heartbreak (“The Odyssey,”) carry a sense of humor and an inner hope instead of despair.

That’s only one bit of the stories Lara Taubman tells in The Gospel of Getting Free, but it’s all there, in vivid emotional detail, for the listener to discover. Promising to be her most transformative work both musically and emotionally, this album is everything it says on the tin and more.

Brooklyn Electronic Artist Paul Feder Explores AI Relationships in New Single ‘Paperclips,’ Out June 25

0

Prolific Brooklyn electronic artist Paul Feder is fully flexing his electro muscles in his new single, “Paperclips” as he explores the inevitable complex relationship with AI that humankind is in the midst of developing. Due out June 25, “Paperclips” will be the first single on Feder’s forthcoming EP Echoes, which is due out later this summer.

With a trippy AI-built video, the new single “Paperclips” is the most direct homage to Kraftwerk Feder fans will have seen thus far. The story itself was inspired by Feder’s own discomfort with and ultimate embrace of AI, as well as theories of philosopher Nick Bostrom about the controversial technology.

“Paperclips” is based on AI thought experiment in which a sentient AI is given a simple task: maximize paperclip production. The end result is a Terminator-style future in which humanity is eradicated in the service of making A LOT of paperclips.

This seems to be where many theories about the advancement of artificial intelligence seem to go, but Feder, through working this track, came to a different conclusion and sees it from the AI’s point of view.

It’s a tongue-in-cheek robotic dance track and fever-dream AI video that imagines intelligent machines attaining meaning and fulfillment in their relentless pursuit of productivity.

Oh, would that it were so simple. That said, many artists who are beginning to play around with AI as a tool for making their art seem to be coming to similar conclusions. The inevitable end of AI’s means could likely be more collaboration than eradication. In the meantime, artists like Feder will continue to experiment with the different creative avenues. With its nod to Kraftwerk, vintage synths marrying with modern DAWs and AI-created video, “Paperclips” certainly bridges that gap. Not to mention it’s a bop. Stay tuned for the rest of Echoes for more concept-driven electronic contemplations.

The Sunny Side of Life by When Mountains Speak

0

We’re about to embark on a genre-bending Odyssey with When Mountains Speak Takes’ “The Sunny Side of Life”

“The Sunny Side of Life,” by When Mountains Speak, is anything but a conventional piece. This 15-minute instrumental throws open the genre playbook, seamlessly weaving together elements of Experimental Rock, Psychedelic Rock, Metal, and even Jazz. The result is a surprisingly coherent journey, edgy yet strangely optimistic, much like the title itself.

The piece unfolds as an intense exploration of sound. Improvisation and experimentation take center stage, showcasing the band’s impressive musicality. The guitar work is particularly noteworthy, a blend of technical mastery and melodic magic. It’s here that the track’s emotional core lies. The melodies feel like a bridge between eras, both nostalgic and futuristic. They evoke a sense of the past’s struggles and a hopeful yearning for a brighter future. This sonic tapestry perfectly captures the feeling of being lost and blue, yet resolutely searching for the “Sunny Side of Life.”

While 15 minutes might seem daunting for some listeners, “The Sunny Side of Life” is a captivating experience. It demands your attention but rewards it with a unique and emotionally resonant journey. If you’re looking for something that pushes boundaries and defies definition, this is a must-listen.
