Written and recorded during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Monterey (Reprise) emerged as a beacon of hope amidst uncertain times. “I wanted to create something beautiful for the future,” Kama Tala explained. Drawing inspiration from John Steinbeck, The Beach Boys, and Vampire Weekend, he crafted a surf-pop anthem infused with literary nuance and personal reflection.

The journey to perfecting the song was not without its hurdles. “Trial and error were the biggest challenges,” he admitted. “But when I recorded the harmony parts—the ‘why eyyy eyy eyy eyy’—everything came together in a way that felt special. I knew I had something unique.”

Healing Hearts for the Holidays: Luanne Hunt’s “Heal the World This Christmas” Offers a Timely Message of Unity

0

Luanne Hunt’s “Heal the World This Christmas” is a heartfelt anthem for unity and compassion, arriving at a time when the world could use both in abundance. Known for her soul-stirring contributions to the holiday canon, Hunt continues her tradition of blending traditional country sensibilities with meaningful, universal themes. With its poignant lyrics and warm melody, the track aims to rekindle the spirit of connection and goodwill that Hunt feels has been eroded in recent years.

The genesis of “Heal the World This Christmas” lies in Hunt’s reflections on societal divisions and the erosion of simple kindness. The message is clear: we’re stronger together. Through the lens of a Christmas song, Hunt invites listeners to rediscover their shared humanity and renew their faith in unity. Her lyrics, anchored in sincerity, evoke imagery of bridges being built and hope rekindled.

Lines like “Let’s heal the world this Christmas / With hope that we can share” cut to the heart of the song’s intention. The spoken-word bridge, underscored by the glow of a fireside and the toll of bells, adds a cinematic quality that reinforces its plea for resilience and love.

Musically, the song is rooted in Hunt’s signature acoustic storytelling style, enriched by understated production that lets the lyrical message take center stage. The chord progression—based in A major and interwoven with contemplative F#m shifts—maintains a balance of warmth and introspection. The melody is accessible yet resonant, striking a timeless quality befitting its universal theme.

Hunt’s vocal delivery is characteristically rich and empathetic, drawing listeners in as though she’s speaking directly to their hearts. There’s an almost hymn-like quality to the chorus, enhanced by its rhythmic simplicity and lyrical repetition, which ensures its message stays with you long after the track ends.

Holiday music is a tricky genre, often straddling the line between sentimentality and sincerity. Hunt avoids the trappings of clichés by crafting a song that feels both timely and timeless. This isn’t just a Christmas tune—it’s a broader call for humanity to reconnect with its better self, wrapped in the familiar comfort of holiday themes.

Given Hunt’s track record—most notably the enduring success of “Christmas Without You (Patsy Cline’s Lost Christmas Song)”—it’s no surprise that she’s capable of creating a new holiday classic. While “Heal the World This Christmas” may not carry the immediate nostalgia of her earlier works, it has the depth and substance to earn its place in the modern holiday music repertoire.

– The spoken-word bridge is particularly memorable, offering a reflective pause before the chorus reaffirms its hopeful message.
– Lines like “We worry all the time what will be” resonate deeply, encapsulating the shared anxieties of modern life while offering a sense of solace.
– The restrained instrumentation, with its acoustic foundation, ensures that Hunt’s voice and message remain the focus.

Luanne Hunt’s “Heal the World This Christmas” is more than a holiday single; it’s a tender plea for unity in turbulent times. With its earnest lyrics, warm melody, and understated arrangement, the song carries the weight of its socially conscious message while still evoking the festive spirit of the season. Whether enjoyed around the Christmas tree or as a reminder of hope in the face of challenges, this track shines as a beacon of Hunt’s artistry and her commitment to making music with meaning.

Before Dawn by Sonomancer

0

Sonomancer’s experimental flair gets toned down with a more melodic and gripping approach on his latest single ‘Before Dawn’.

The Australian wizard Sonomancer is a musician and producer, based in Melbourne. His sound mostly revolves around a blend of ambience, down tempo, and experimental electronics that he produces himself. On his latest cut, titled ‘Before Dawn’, we find Sonomancer taking a route that’s a little different from what we’re used to.

‘Before Dawn’ makes its way with an instantly infectious melody that’s reminiscent of a mix between Prodigy’s instantly catchy and Massive Attack’s deeply introspective approaches. Through it all, Sonomancer is maintaining a uniformly restrained sonic atmosphere that revolves around a solid and muted beat to support the repeating synth melody. Sonomancer’s choices for his sounds are, as usual, quite terrific. Utilizing synths that are equally percussive and peppy but are also with their harrowing edge, and blending them with his usual, ambient, wailing synth pads make for an engaging and lush sonic experience that is on point with what we are used to from the Australian sound designer.

‘Before Dawn’ showcases Sonomancer’s more approachable face with superb style and an engaging pace. A sonic trip that’s exciting from the first to the last moments, ‘Before Dawn’ is an exquisite piece of sophisticated electronica that readily defies conventional genres.

NGMB by Leonie sherif

Leonie Sherif’s inspired and ingenious flows and musical world building are all top notch on her latest single ‘NGMB’, a sweet blend of soul, pop, RnB, with healthy flairs of afro and even of reggae. ‘NGMB’ is extremely colorful, if not anything else.

An English singer and songwriter, Leonie Sherif is based in Dagenham, and she is brandishing a sound that’s wholly engaging on her latest single ‘NGMB’, named short for Never Get Me Back. The single showcases Sherif’s dazzling array of iconic influences from the 90s and 80s deeply seated into her musical background.

The gorgeous single makes do with a simplistic, repeating progression that sounds warm and familiar, a perfect launching pad for the gentle percussion storm and the stampede of sensual soul that is Leonie Sherif’s vocal delivery, subdued, confident, and approachable. The interplay between Sherif’s bouncy melodies, the gripping production and its peppy, danceable grooves, and the ethereal pads all makes for an enriching listening experience.

‘NGMB’ is warm and lush, with a healthy dose of melancholy that is balanced by introspective lyrics, wonderfully upbeat production, and a restrained composition, resulting in a wholly brilliant listen that is immediately catchy and attractive. Leonie Sherif’s ‘NMGB’ highlights a talented singer and songwriter who is in full control of the atmospheres she’s building with her delivery, her choice of pads, and her melodies.

Luv U Bad by Progress

SPACIAL REGGAE? ARE WE LISTENING TO A COMPLETELY NEW FEEL AND GENRE?

Blending retro nostalgia with an unmistakable twist, Luv U Bad by Progress and producer Bobby Boyd stands out as a fusion of 80s dancehall energy and modern, experimental production. While firmly rooted in reggae traditions, the track introduces a distinctive atmosphere that, to me, feels like stepping into a sci-fi-inspired soundscape; a spacial, futuristic vibe that elevates the genre into uncharted territory.

The production is where this cosmic element shines. Bobby Boyd’s signature psychedelic flair is complemented by live drum and bass, shimmering effects, and ethereal tones, creating a soundscape that feels both expansive and immersive. While these space-like qualities might be my personal interpretation, there’s no denying that the song pushes boundaries.

Progress brings it all together with melodic flows and clever lyrics, delivering a vocal performance that’s stylish, catchy, and undeniably engaging. His delivery balances the innovative edge of the track with a relatable warmth, ensuring it resonates with fans of both classic and modern reggae.

As part of Progress’s Vibe Album, one half of the double album Mood & Vibe, Luv U Bad captures the essence of merging eras and experimenting with sound. While the concept of “Spacial Reggae” is purely my take, this track feels like an evolution of the genre, hinting at exciting possibilities. Whether it’s a new frontier or a fresh twist, Luv U Bad is a testament to the artistry of Progress and Bobby Boyd, making it a must-listen.

Whoa by Rob Burgundy

0

Running for just a little under 2 minutes, Rob Burgundy’s latest release is Catchy, with a capital C, inspiring, and endlessly entertaining. Well when I say endlessly, I do mean that ‘Whoa’ needed to be a little longer.

Bold flows and hard-hitting lyrics, ‘Whoa’ is the latest single by the Clayton County based hip hop musician Rob Burgundy. Soulful, quirky, novel, and quite fresh, the punchy production and vocal ideas on ‘Whoa’ are undoubtedly brilliant, and quite unique, with charming vibes and restrained, confident deliveries.

The short stunner is based on a descending koto melody that’s at once minimal enough to not interfere with the general minimalism theme of the track, yet memorable enough to leave a clear mark and have a distinctive presence underneath the punchy trap beat and massive sub bass, all working to prop up Burgundy’s subdued deliveries, inspiring lyrics, and his buzzing arrays of Woahs.

‘Woah’ is both fantastic as it is, short, concise, and quick, and in dire need of more.. Woahs. With production as gorgeous as this, lyrics this confident, and ideas this unique, Rob Burgundy’s latest single does not even veer towards disappointing, which is hard to pull off being a song this pretty and this short.

Album: Digital Voyage, Vol. 1 by ReSeT Ryan Tram

0

The first volume of Ryan Tram’s Digital Voyage is a sweet and immersive electropop experience with a gentle, fair flair of indie, suburban pop á la Arcade Fire in the midst of all the charmingly warped and processed sonic atmospheres and tightly written melodies and well constructed songs.

Musician and producer Ryan Tram is based in Markham, Canada. Known by his stage name ReSeT Ryan Tram, Tram just released Digital Voyage, Vol. 1. The concept album is almost entirely instrumental, telling the story of a virtual couple, Red and Blue, their separation and their feelings of heartbreak, alongside being trapped in a virtual world. The piano driven compositions are lovely on their own if you pay no mind to the storyline running underneath, ensuring that the listen will be rewarding for lovers of glitch and art pop.

The production on the album is just as rewarding and as immersive as the bright and upbeat songwriting. Confident in its glitchiness and vocal warping, as well as in its driving and economically punchy beats, pieces like the dub inspired intro ‘Elevate’ and the driving ‘Above’ are superb listens for a night drive. ‘Anew’ is a short piece full of musical, rhythmic, and production ideas that ends way too soon, while ‘Human’ is a similarly fertile piece that takes ample time to explore each of its exciting ideas.

The jumpy ‘Breeze’ is an engaging piece full of intertwining, arpeggiating synths and bouncy melodies. An immersive experience that highlights Tram’s production skills. Ryan Tram’s talent in processing vocals and soundscapes really comes to form in the gorgeous ‘Last May’. The sweetly melancholic ballad is melodically rich and with a lush, fulfilling flow with varying dynamics and generally mild and accommodating feel to it. One of the album’s most memorable tunes. Tram also put together a delightful 4-minute teaser clip for the album with help from his sister Emily Tram. A fitting accompaniment for an album that has been in the making for 4 years, telling a delightful story that is inspired by Tram’s own coming of age.

Ryan Tram excels at world building, whether digital or real. An artist inspired by and helped by a group of talented friends like Andrew Huang, YouTube extraordinaire, and Laura Canela, an up and coming artist who helped Tram with a few choruses and lyrics. Tram is also fascinated by the concept of a digital world and a digital self, concepts he is able to incorporate into his music with help from his time spent in Valencia, pursuing his Berklee College of Music masters degree. An efficient and capable sound designer with a curious way of telling interesting stories, Ryan Tram’s Digital Voyage is most fulfilling.
