Album: Ruud Voesten’s Ambrosia by RUUD VOESTEN

0

Netherlands-based music composer Ruud Voesten takes us through a journey, an untraditional one, perhaps, but one that will haunt us for some time to come.

Ruud takes us through a journey to hell, contemplating the seven deadly sins…based on his time researching Dante Alighieri’s Inferno with his jazz album “Ambrosia”.

Ruud, as a composer and jazz band leader…takes things into his own hands and creates a jazz masterpiece to goes hand in hand with Dante’s Inferno.

…it sounds like a far-fetched idea, sure, jazz and hell, together, in the same sentence…but, it works…and actually more than you’d think…Ruud’s jazz approach really creates a musical soundtrack to Inferno…that has all the emotional energy and can push us emotionally down certain roads…

The album is made up of 12 tracks, totaling around 1 hour of jazz heaven…but talks about hell…starting with the foundational first track “Within a Forest Dark”…a soundtrack mood-setting track that keeps on evolving, not just a verse and chorus…no, it continues to change and evolve into many sections…drones…melodies…conveying many emotions and translating stories into music.

“Ambrosia” is a very soundtrack-like album…and it certainly is, but by adopting a jazz direction, everything it touches becomes more magical…any story it tells is mesmerizing…like with the third track “This Is Fine”…a saxophone leading track, but with the help of the upright bass, jazz hi-hats, and some keys…it’s dream-like.

The album continues to stun at every corner, with every track…and some have more shock value than others…like “Empty”.

“Empty” starts with a shocking sound that you wouldn’t find in a jazz setting…and the melodies are also intriguing…bit of a shock, a hint of terror, and some mystery…it’s one of the most out-of-the-box jazz melodies you could hear, especially in a soundtrack context.

…with its trend of shocking and stunning us, “Ambrosia” manages to keep all of its 12 tracks unique, and tell a story, but with hugely varying emotions…each track is a story in itself…

This is a highly recommended journey, a journey that transcends music, storytelling, and soundtracks…it’s all of the above, masterfully wrapped in an album that has so much attention to detail, even the artwork is a masterpiece, with its mosaic drawing of Dante himself.

Go check out this masterpiece of a jazz album, “Ambrosia” by Ruud Voesten…right now.

The album will be released on ZenneZ Records right away followed by a Dutch tour…here are the dates…

24-09 Limburg Jazz, Venlo

30-09 Diekhuus, Middelharnis

12-10 Pletterij, Haarlem

15-11 Orpheus, Apeldoorn

18-11 Roode Bioscoop, Amsterdam

19-11 Taste of Jazz, Deventer

16-12 Artishock, Soest

27-12 Bimhuis, Amsterdam

…and these are the amazing musicians behind the music…

Mo van der Does – Alto saxophone

Wietse Voermans – Tenor saxophone

Koen Schalkwijk – Grand piano

Tijs Klaassen – Double bass

Ruud Voesten – Drums and composition

Recording and mixing were done by Micha de Kanter and the Mastering was by Wessel Oltheten, Studio: Fattoria Musica (DE)

Wishing Ruud and the band all the best in life. I can’t imagine what will come out next from this great artist…but we’re sure it’s going to be phenomenal.

Cheers!

Album: THE TWANG GANG [Live in Berlin] by MORTAL PROPHETS

0

New York-based Americana/folk musical project Mortal Prophets just released the album “The Twang Gang (live in Berlin)”…the whole album is 32 minutes long and should be experienced in one sitting as if you’re attending this journey live.

…if no one told me this was a live album, I wouldn’t have known, the quality of this one is mind-blowing.

With their frontman John Beckmann on vocals and harmonica, Parker Bryant on guitars, Concertina on bass, Richmond Davis on organ and harmonica, and Beckett Laurent on percussion and programming…this is the whole gang of Mortal Prophets…and “The Twang Gang” is their latest journey, full of psychedelics and ambient dreamy folk tunes…

The album has a very ‘acid/psychedelic’ feel to it…a strong musical experimentation is going on here and on full display…Moral Prophets don’t shy away from any exploration into uncharted musical territories, they welcome it.

The tracks are instrumentals…with some words appearing here and there that give it the live feeling…with some minimal vocoder appearing in “Can you feel It”…which is like two songs in one…the first part is very folky and indie…the second part is like a soundtrack…a transitional soundtrack of some kind…then following this transition is another experimental track…”Ride Em High”…

The transition I was pointing out is like a shift in the album, taking us into another dimension…”Ride Em High” has straight-on vocals…which is a big shift…both melodically and vocally too!

It’s like a twist in the middle of the movie “From Dusk Till Dawn”…it almost completely changes everything!

…if you didn’t watch the movie, I won’t spoil it…go watch it after you listen to the album.

…from there, the album continues to take that twist and runs with it…” Alamo Aloha” maintains that mood…then it changes up with “Dog Face Joe”, one of the shortest songs on the album, and one of the most intriguing…the vocals here are not for singing…it’s more of a storytelling element.

That is not the end of shaking things up…wait till you reach “Psychotronic Guitar Lullaby”…this is perfection…and lullaby it is.

Mortal Prophets manages to mesmerize our souls with their unique approach to musical storytelling…like nothing else we’ve experienced…absolutely unique.

I wish Mortal Prophets all the best and can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

Cheers!

Who Is Hurting Who by TARA HACK

0

Following the success of her previous single “Sweet Nothing”, Tara Hack is once again back with another hit…her latest single “Who Is Hurting Who”…a soulful electro-pop song.

The song has a story within its lyrics…it talks about how a relationship is coming to an end, yet, the two are arguing about who to take the blame…it’s already ending…and does it even matter?

The topic is very specific, very relatable, and very much thought-provoking…and I love that about Tara’s lyrics. They have a very strong and deep visual side to them and every word counts.

“Who Is Hurting Who” takes an electro-pop direction, with a strong melodic presence through Tara’s amazing vocals…and let’s not forget the stunning back vocals too, brilliant.

The main chorus melody here is quite intriguing, it has a unique and rare scale change that kind of messes with you…this is absolutely amazing, it’s not something you could anticipate…and I love that musical left hook that comes out of nowhere.

The different melodies here are almost all catchy and you’ll get infected with their earworms right away.

We wish Tara Hack all the best in her career, she definitely deserves that…and we just can’t wait to see what she comes up with next for the world.

Cheers!

1999 by CARSON FERRIS

0

I’m an 80s kid, so I grew up listening to and loving both the 80s and the 90s music world… with Carson Ferris’ single “1999”…I just got intrigued and hooked right away.

With a period-perfect rendition of the 90s, Carson nails it and hits a home run…It’s difficult to put in words…but Carson captured the essence of the ’90s…ALL OF IT…and gift wraps it in one song…that is “1999”.

The sounds, instrumentation, musical composition…everything is just unbelievably 90s…no, you’d think it’s ‘like the 90s’…no, it’s THE definitive 90s song.

Speaking of the sounds…the hits you hear on the song, this is so 90s I didn’t believe it at first…the bass sound…how it’s composed, and how it’s played, are phenomenal!

With “1999”, Carson is taking all of the 90s music we have grown up to, putting them in the blender, creating a smoothie…then adding flavors unique to Caron Ferris…and serving it to the world, stunning the world.

“1999” is 2 minutes and 41 seconds of pure nostalgic awesomeness…and is the closest thing we have in 2023 to a time machine that could take us exclusively to the 90s.

I wish Carson all the best in life… a phenomenal job and we can’t wait for more of what Carson creates.

Cheers!

Album: ETERNAL by RELLA

0

New Zealand-based artist RELLA has released a new album titled “Eternal”…a hip-hop album that easily disrupts the music scene with its melodic and heartfelt approach.

RELLA is a rap artist from Wellington, New Zealand and he recorded the whole album in a bedroom studio…the whole story started with a real-life challenge that was presented to RELLA, an abusive relationship between his own mother and step-father, that ended dramatically.

…coming from this hardship, RELLA challenged this energy into music, a lifesaver for many in the world…and decided to create his epic album “Eternal”.

The album has many flavors of hip-hop that don’t just present itself in raw emotional form…RELLA adds more flavors and more emotional layers with his absolutely phenomenal instrumentation.

…for example, the album starts with the song “Belong”…an epic melodic hip-hop song like no other.

The song changes the playing field by being absolutely melodic, focusing on the riff by the acoustic guitar…the vocal flow is absolutely stunning.

The album continues to maintain this melodic approach to almost all songs…sometimes adding different flavors, like old-school hip-hop, some newer trap elements, melodies…and lots of’em.

“broken” takes a more traditional approach with its hard-hitting beats…

“rockstar” goes to the guitar and takes a super melodic approach…this is one of the songs that if you put it on repeat, you could just forget and keep it all day long.

There is absolutely no song on “Eternal” that doesn’t have a strong charismatic musical presence and its own unique melodies…

…but RELLA keeps changing it up…with a song like “Fell in Love”, RELLA chooses to create something new, like a hybrid of original hip-hop, and mix it with pop and rock elements…something absolutely fresh sounding.

RELLA’s “Eternal” is a journey of an album…with 13 tracks…it’s such a treat for the ears and soul, it’s a treasure chest of musicality that keeps on giving new musical meanings to emotions.

We wish RELLA all the best in life, we can’t wait to see what comes next from this absolutely amazing artist.

Cheers!

Strongest Of Bonds by LINDA CONWAY

0

Ireland has given the world many amazing artists…the list goes on and on…and with the release of “Strongest of Bonds”, another artist is writing her name in bold onto that list…Linda Conway is making musical history with her latest release.

This is Linda’s debut single…and if this is how Linda is starting out… let’s warn the world, that the challenge will be harder, the bar will be raised…, and a new force has entered the proverbial ring…

“Strongest of Bonds” is a vocals and piano piece of art…it’s not a song that can be put in a box with a label on it…if you need to, we can say it’s a folk/acoustic musical…but that wouldn’t shed enough light on the beautiful melodies of the piano and the soaring mountainous vocals of Linda.

Linda manages to not only deliver a stellar vocal and melodic performance on “Strongest of Bonds”…but she also delivers a mesmerizing tale, an emotional story of a child losing her mother.

Drawing inspiration from this real-life hardship, Linda conveys her emotions to everyone, no matter what language or what culture…the song transcends everything, because it focuses on the one and absolute truth out there that we can all feel…genuine emotions.

We wish Linda all the best…we can’t really comprehend how much of an amazing debut single “Strongest of Bonds” is…but we’re sure that if Linda continues with this musical flavor, her star will shine brighter before we know it.

Cheers!

Lovesick EP Review by Lara Anderson

0

As she started posting music on the internet at the age of 14, Australian singer/songwriter Lara Anderson‘s successful cover of the foundation’s Build Me Up Buttercup in 2018 took her to her next creative step, the release of her debut EP Lovesick on the 11th of August 2023. Lovesick is heartfelt touching EP described by the artist as “an ode to

those who are looking for love with the best of intentions, and lose themselves along the way.”. Let me tell you more about it.

With warm piano and soothing vocals, Lara Anderson opened her EP Lovesick with The Day That I Met You. She softly moves forward with her emotional sound adding beautifully arranged arpeggios and subtle heart-hitting cellos, cementing her authentic sound and pure organic flow. All I Ever Wanted keeps the dark touching mood going while adding extra layers of harmonies and smooth progression to her mix that reinforces her melancholic sound, and carefully setting up an emotional bond with the listeners throughout her streaming words and melodies that won’t be easily broken. Charity builds up on its predecessors’ sound, offering a heartfelt multi-layered arrangement that shows Lara Anderson‘s diverse approaches as she freely mixes her elements producing a different flavor of her mellow dreamy sound, mixed with deep shades of bittersweet melodies in a solid fluid structure that smoothly carries the listeners throughout the EP’s stops. Burden opens with a sharp raw acoustic guitar, offering a new texture to Anderson‘s sound. It has a chill pace as she mixes acoustic chords with piano melodies and tops it all with her magnificent vocals, leading the listeners on a floating musical journey with an escalating dynamic structure that moves slowly but steadily towards a bigger sound that feels like riding waves taking over the listeners’ senses. Don’t Forget To Kiss Me ends the EP with a brighter open sound. It’s a spacious tune where Lara Anderson took the needed time and space to project her beautiful vocal melodies and while it moves forward, layers of sweet orchestrations and atmospheric harmonies were added making it the perfect ending for such an emotional sonic journey.

Lovesick has a dreamy sound with a dark layer and fluid melodies, showing Lara Anderson‘s attention to detail in her multi-layered writing and her well-knowledge of her sound and direction. I’ll be looking forward to more from you Lara Anderson, keep on rocking. Cheers!

November by Holly Jade

0

In her latest release, “November,” the Australian singer-songwriter Holly Jade, stirs our hearts with hitting-hard blue waves of nostalgia, ache, and bittersweet memories. You will become immersed in its blend of pain and beauty, regardless of whether your soul is prepared for its alluring melody and the pain that lies inside its sensitivity.

“November” is an indie pop take with lo-fi influences that Holly Jade crafted to convey the weight she carries inside due to losing a friend after death placed its hands on them at a young age. Grieving is always overwhelming, but Holly Jade delicately managed to tell her heartbreaking story in a very smooth manner through her poetic lyricism and ravishing vocals.

The song carries the complexity of grief: the loss, the unfairness of death, the good times, the confusion, and the melancholy wrapping up every dark and bright thought since the sudden death. From the very beginning, where we hear the voice of Holly Jade’s friends, Stephen Ordoñez and Jamesfromtheinternet, who collaborated to result in this heart-melting piece, we feel like it’s not a recorded song; we are just sitting with close friends, hearing and sharing our losses and solacing each other. What makes this feeling last is that the ad-lib speeches make an entrance more than once, including Holly Jade herself.

What is mesmerizing about “November” is that it offers the November autumn-y vibes, with the elements sounding warm, yet the storyline feels like a freezing breeze that gives you a chill. You get to feel pain and grace throughout the track, as Holly Jade’s poignant vocals sound both silky and husky, and the guitar strings back up the intoxicating vocal performance with a gentle, serene melody. While the vocals harmonize with the instrumentation, we get such an intimate feel as we get to the depths of Holly Jade’s thoughts and emotions.

As the song progresses, you’ll instantly get hooked by the soaring chorus and the pain, the rage, and the longing in it. The synth adds some vibrancy to the atmospheric quality of the melody, and you’ll start paying more attention to how top-notch the production is and how it’s making all elements work together to evoke our emotions.

Holly Jade is naturally talented and skilled; this can be illustrated by how this song has the ability to resonate deeply with anyone who hears it, whether you’ve lost someone to death or not. This sincere output, with its rich musicality, will find its way to your heart.

Interview with A-Zal

0

We had a pleasant interview with the witty composer A-Zal, who composed music for Marvel movies and series as well as TV series that most of us love. Now he’s invading the music scene with his pop release, “Movie Script,” which will be followed by other singles from his upcoming album, “17 & 11 Nights.”

A-Zal is the moniker for Atif Afzal, a composer and singer-songwriter who is Indian by blood, grew up in London, and is currently based in New York. “Movie Script” is his first song release; however, he’s well-known for his music compositions for films like “Resort to Love,” “Prague,” “Pune 52,” “Monsoon Shootout,” and “Baji.” As well as the American television series “Ms. Marvel (miniseries),” “Loki (TV series),” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” and “The Twilight Zone.”

You can read along to learn more about the bombastic release and A-Zal himself.

Interview Questions

  • Hello, A-Zal! Congrats on the smash successes of “Movie Script.” As this is your debut single, did you aim to make it a hit? Or you didn’t expect it to rank on the chart so soon?
Absolutely! It was a conscious decision to release “Movie Script” as the debut. It had many factors which made it a radio friendly song and a track that would connect with the audience. I definitely had a feeling that the song would be picked up by the radio stations. However, I really never expected it to be played alongside some of my favorite artists like Taylor Swift, Ed Sheeran, Olivia Rodrigo, Dua Lipa and Miley Cyrus. And, the biggest achievement for the song so far has been that it entered the Mediabase Activator charts and I happen to be one amongst the three independent artist in the top 51.

  • You built quite a cinematic atmosphere in every element of the song. Why did you choose movies to be your debut’s theme? Does it have something to do with you being a seasoned composer for films’ music, or does it have a more personal tale?
It’s a combination of both these factors. The theme of the song is to celebrate life as if it was a movie. That’s where the name Movie Script comes from. I live my life like a movie script and it has been full of ups and downs. But, I felt it was quite dramatic and cinematic. For a boy who performed in New York subway stations to make it to Marvel Studios films was just like a movie to me. To add to that, movies have been a big part of my professional life in the last decade and I wanted to have an element from that into my album too.

  • The process of writing and recording “Movie Script” must have been exciting and different. Can you walk us through it?
The process was very exciting. In my production, every element of the song needs to make a statement. Movie Script is based on a strong baseline which is quite catchy and easy to even sing the baseline. The melody of the song is quite easy to pick up and the chorus is unique, yet strong. When I finished production of the song, we spent a month in just eliminating a few elements from the song so that every existing part makes a strong statement in the song. Every musical element demands a place in the final mix of the song.

  • It’s different to write music for a specific plot than to write it from your heart and soul to express yourself. So I believe that everything happens at the right time, but is there a reason you didn’t decide to make your own earlier?
When I write for a movie, I’m always given a brief and a character. I didn’t write about my story earlier as I wanted to travel a journey before penning it down into songs. Besides that, I was really enjoying writing for movie characters. I got to write soundtracks for some amazing Marvel Characters such as Loki which was played by Tom Hiddleston and Ms. Marvel, which was played by Kamala Khan.
  • How did it feel to write music as you really desired, not as a certain scene required?
I have always loved writing music for movie characters and scenes. But in my album, I am writing all the songs which are based on me, and only me. I want my fans to know about me through my songs. This was quite a major shift. Although the songwriting process remains the same, the narrative is much more clearer as I am the character here.

  • Not only was the song distinct, but so was its music video. Can you take us behind the scenes and tell us more about the idea and execution of the video?
Music Video is a natural extension of the song and I wanted to take my listeners to a cinematic world to match up to the lyrics of the song. I had the concept in mind, but couldn’t find a right fit for the direction team. So, I decided to self-direct the music video. This was the first time I was directing a music video, so it had its challenges. But, I had the storyline crisp and clear. It was all about executing it right. All of a sudden, I find myself setting up a new team for the video. But, this really paid off when we finished work on all the animation. The video has crossed 135k views on YouTube within 2 months of the release and I feel rewarded for my efforts. Many fans reached out to me saying that they loved the music video more than the song!

  • The song is an energizing teaser for what comes next. Can you give us a glimpse of the upcoming album?
The upcoming album will be mainstream pop. I am releasing songs in an order that will take my listeners into my journey. There will be some surprizes too! For instance, my next song ‘Lonely Town’ is totally different from ‘Movie Script’. Not only the song, but also the music video is totally different. My next album ’17 & 11 Nights’ will be released through ten singles and you can expect a lot of new releases in the coming months and years.

  • “Movie Script” might be your debut, but you’ve released mesmerizing covers before. Based on your Spotify and Instagram profile, you’ve done Justin Bieber and Harry Styles’ covers as well as a lot of Ed Sheeran’s covers, and I have to say you do sound a bit like Sheeran in the covers. Would you say that Sheeran is your influence?
Ed Sheeran is the reason why I am doing my personal album. And I have been referred to as the “American Ed Sheeran” so many times. It kind of feels nice to be compared with an artist who you love so much. Although, my songwriting and vocal texture is different that Ed Sheeran, but his songs have always inspired me in a big way. I was so occupied in film music that releasing my own music took a backseat. It is after I heard “Perfect” that I was moved enough to make another bold decision in life, which is to release my own album. Ed Sheeran’s music has a huge role to play in my music and life.

  • Back to where it all started, it’s a leap of faith to move to New York and leave everything behind. Did you have a specific plan when you made this decision, or just faith in your talent?
Talent without a plan could be a perfect recipe for disaster. Leaving behind everything, a life, a career, family and migrating to another country is one of the boldest moves one can make in life. I had a solid plan of action though. Before migrating to the USA, I used to come here 2 to 3 times a year to network and set some ground for myself. I went film producers, musicians, managers, music houses, everyone I could meet. I also landed up in Hans Zimmer’s studio in Santa Monica, LA. I knew I had to get my foot in Hollywood first. It took me three years to create a splash in Hollywood. And, now it was the right time to do what I came here for. Release my own music to the world!

  • Indian music differs from the music in the American scene, indeed. In the future, would you make an album or a song that pays tribute to your Indian roots, or hasn’t that idea crossed your mind so far?
I have finally found my sound and will not digress away from it. It can take an artist years to find their real sound. I have done a ton of film scoring and also done world music. But, mainstream pop is my sound. It’s almost an amalgamation of Ed Sheeran and Dua Lipa. From here on, my listeners can expect more of this for the upcoming albums.
  • You have a mind-blowing discography regarding film and TV series’ music compositions. What was the most challenging project you composed music for?
Without a doubt, working with Mavel Studios was the most challenging part of my career. When you work with Hollywood’s best production studios, you have to give your best. Just giving a 99% doesn’t work. It tests your limits and pushes you to do your absolute best. You know that millions of people all over the world literally wait for Marvel movies and series to be released. Specifically, Ms. Marvel was really challenging as I had to compose keeping the cultural diversity in mind and still keep it commercial sounding.

  • Each project you worked on was different, so it required a genre that would suit it best. What genre felt like your niche?
For film soundtracks and scores, I love hybrid orchestral sounds and my scores were often very experimental. I literally have recorded random things like a drill machine in one of my film soundtracks.

  • Finally, thank you for your time! What plans do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
2023 has more releases lined up, which I will be announcing soon. For now, I am really excited to see how the audience reacts to my next single ‘Lonely Town’ releasing on October 6. This song is my tribute to New York city, the city that gave me everything. I have also self-directed this music video and it is a story telling narrative shot in New York and Brooklyn. It captures my struggle days in New York and how the city was the wind beneath my wings. I performed in Subway stations and the tips left by the listeners meant the world to me. From a subway performer, I went to work with Hollywood’s top studios and charted in US radio. This is a song really close to me, and I hope the audience gives it as much love as it did to Movie Script.

Movie Script by A-Zal

0

A debut song might not be the artist’s best creation if they’re just getting started in the music industry, but if the song is crafted by a seasoned artist like A-Zal, then it will undoubtedly be top-notch. “Movie script” is A-Zal’s banger that exploded the pop scene once it was dropped on the 11th of August.

A-Zal is the moniker for Atif Afzal, a composer and singer-songwriter hailing from New York. “Movie Script” is his first song release; however, he’s well-known for his music compositions for films and the American television series “Ms. Marvel (miniseries),” “Loki (TV series),” “NCIS: Los Angeles,” and “The Twilight Zone.”

“Movie Script” highlights A-Zal’s musical prowess as a singer, songwriter, and vocalist. The song offers the charm of love when one’s heart skips a beat whenever one sees their significant other or even their crush. This excitement is portrayed through every element, as the lyrics, vocals, composition, and music video all burst with life.

The beats of the song are vital, inviting you right from the start to own the dance floor with your grooving. The rhythm is infectious and matches the energy of the vibrant vocal delivery that seamlessly grabs attention once A-Zal starts singing. Nevertheless, every single element manages to smoothly take part in the glam spotlighted on the vocals, which shows A-Zal’s musicianship.

From start to finish, the funky pop will enchant you to be part of the movie, following the storyline of the well-plotted lyrics. The vocals narrate the story with ease through a sentimental tone and vibrant timbre, which strikes a balance between poetic lyrism and spirited instrumentation.

The production of the song is flawless, and that’s why you can feel and enjoy each component and feel seduced to instantly let loose and dance whenever you hear the first note. Also, A-Zal didn’t think that it was enough to drop a dope song that people would be addicted to; he complemented it with a colorful music video starring him and his charismatic performance and featuring some cool visuals.

According to the charts, the tune is a smash success, and this is just the beginning. Stay tuned and wait for more hits.
