FUGAZI by BoyBoy

0

‘FUGAZI’ is a breath of fresh air within the scope of jazzy soul pop. From its twisting rhythm, lush arrangement with a sublime layering job of vocal and synth chops, to the smooth vocal delivery from BoyBoy, ‘FUGAZI’ stands out and is ready to be replayed over and over again.

Based in Perth, Australia, BoyBoy is a musician who started as a bedroom producer back in 2018, then continued to hone his sound, collaborating with a number of local artists, until the present day where his name is held in high regard in the café music and easy listening scenes. Listening to ‘FUGAZI’, it becomes clear that BoyBoy is here with a more nuanced work than his usual, as the song features a relatively intricate mix that rewards attention with revealing more and more of the layers that construct the gorgeous sound, which is perhaps not the best of formulas for café music. Nonetheless, ‘FUGAZI’ is a chill soul pop stunner that’s more on the jazzy side of things, making it feel and sound special.

The parlor quartet-sounding vocal sample was enough to get me hooked, then BoyBoy proceeded with a few delightful lines of a sparkling piano to accompany the offbeat groove, and I was completely sold. Check out ‘FUGAZI’ by BoyBoy if you’re down for some smooth soul music, or if the songs of Frank Ocean or Matt Corby are your cup of tea.

God’s Eyes by DAX

Whether we want to admit that or not, we live in a messed-up world. It doesn’t matter where you are right now; I can assure you that whatever your spot on the map is, you’re facing corruption, injustice, repression, and so many more major issues. We are all just trying to survive this dystopian age. Dax’s latest single, “God’s Eyes,” reflects this cruel reality yet offers the hope we all need these days.

Dax has a mind-blowing discography so far. Day by day, he’s gaining the popularity he deserves. Why doesn’t he? The Kansas-based artist has remained authentic and sincere from day one. Dax sends messages that he believes in, and that’s why his music resonates. And it’s not just the message; it’s how he delivers it. He has a solid musicality that will lure you to vibe in and embrace the content.

“God’s Eyes” is a masterpiece. It definitely showcases Dax’s originality. You won’t be hearing another Hip-Hop song; rather, you’ll hear a divine piece filled with the ugly truth, pain, hope, and faith all at once. Set your heart to take in the profound message, the quality music, and the blessing.

The track starts off with an ethereal intro to set the mood for something heavenly. However, while it progresses, it demonstrates the devilish touch in the world through Dax’s feisty performance and the rebellious beats. It’s incredible how the witty artist managed to embody peace and grace with chaos and evil in every element.

Dax’s vocals are captivating. He offers a confident performance through his powerful vocal line and vulnerable sentiments. You can sense how he’s mad at the world, feel pity for it, and be grateful for God’s mercy in his voice. For me, this is how you know an artist is truthful: when you feel the lyrics through his vocals and feel them penetrate your mind and heart.

It’s not only Dax’s vocals that make the track infectious. It’s also every mastered beat and how they harmonically flow with his smooth rapping. You can sense the will to make a change in the melodies. You’ll seamlessly feel charged and ready to not be hidden anymore but rather be the light that tries to ignite this miserable, dark world.

Although I could go on and on about this track and Dax’s musicianship, I’ll stop here and leave you with one last thought. Once I heard “God’s Eyes,” the first thought that popped into my mind was, “How is Dax an indie singer? Why isn’t he known worldwide yet?” If you’re familiar with Dax’s discography, you’ll instantly agree with me. If you’re not, then you’re missing a lot. Hit the play button below to get to know this remarkable artist.

Standing Still by ETHAN SENGER

0

Sometimes we stand still because we are too scared to take a step forward. Our reasons are different; for some, maybe the past is holding them back; for others, maybe people’s negativity is tightening their well; and for most, their own ruined self-image is imprisoning them. Ethan Senger’s “Standing Still” movingly captures all these complex and vulnerable emotions and offers a push forward that many might need.

Ethan Senger is an emerging singer, songwriter, and guitarist. “Standing Still” is the title track from his sophomore EP. It’s an emotional rollercoaster that might press some wounds, but it’s definitely encouraging and inspiring. Every element of the song will touch a piece of your soul.

The single starts with moving guitar riffs that set the mood for something ethereal. Senger’s vocals are absolutely captivating! He offers such a poignant performance with his soulful vocal line. The lyrics have a perfect storytelling approach, and his singing offers the bittersweet poetry in each lyric flawlessly.

Senger is telling the story of most of us. Who didn’t let others get in their heads before? Who wasn’t afraid to take the leap? Who didn’t have scars that hurt enough to prevent them from trying again? We all have our stories. Senger mastered gathering them and expressing them through his soul-stirring vocals and heartfelt musicality.

The instrumental matches the energy of the vocals perfectly and offers the theme’s inspiring message ideally. Through the slow tempo and then moving to a more dynamic tempo, every instrument is sending the message that Senger wants it out there:

“Baby you

Gotta live your life

Don’t be scared if it feels so right”

Sincere vocals, fascinating guitar riffs, resonating drumming, and genuine lyricism are waiting for you once you hit the play button.

EP: “NOT SATISFIED” – THE REMIXES by TALLY KOREN

0

Tally Koren, the established London-based singer-songwriter just released a new EP…but with a twist…it’s titled “Not Satisfied – The Remixes”…you got it…the EP is made up of remixes of Tally’s song “Not Satisfied”…a very interesting, risky and courageous move…but let’s see how this experience turned out to be…

I will go ahead and spoil it a little bit…in the case of Tally Koren releasing an EP with 6 remixes of one song…there was only one way for this to work…is for each and every remix to have its complete and unique identity…

…I will say now, the EP works…so yeah, the remixes are completely unique and varied in their direction and production.

This could be one of the most risky and avante-garde remix EPs I’ve experienced in a very long time…or maybe ever. The remixes are unique in their production and approach, keeping it fresh with each play.

You’ve got the subtle remix with the TK7 remix…with a bit of a melancholic emotional approach…

…and you’ve got the dance ballad approach with the Omniks remix…

…you’ll also experience the more upbeat and in-your-face approach with the Xander Milne remix…

…and more…

The variety makes it feel like you’re either experiencing different songs…or that you’re experiencing a progressive dance/electro/pop song…either of these emotional experiences is more than enough to keep you hooked and glued to your speakers from start to finish.

Tally, we wish you all the best…and we can’t wait to see what you will bring to the table with your future releases.

Cheers!

Shakermaker by THE NUMB PROJECT

0

Portland-based producer Chris Calarco, a.k.a The Numb Project,  just released a new single titled “Shakermaker”…an upbeat electro-ethereal experience…let’s jump into this experience and see how it goes…

“Shakermaker” is a very unique approach to fusion…the track has many charismatic elements that make its DNA up…

…for example…you’ve got a very tight groove with the beats and locking in with the beat is the synthesizers…

Also, you’ve got some very clear glitch elements that stand out and act out in both a melodic and percussive attitude…

You also have many dreamy elements…giving the experience an ethereal taste…especially with the release section, let’s call it the bridge…everything goes 110% ambient and cloudy…feels like your feet left the ground and you’re almost flying.

The sonic experience of “Shakermaker” is a very hopeful and bright one…something we need to hear more of.

Wishing all the best to The Numb Project, Chris, we can’t wait to hear what you have next for the world.

Cheers!

Album: Memorias de Crónicas Futuras [Remastered Edition] by HORIZONTE LIED

0

The 11th release from Mexican retro synthpop act Horizonte Lied comes laden with classic synth tones loaded with nostalgia and groove on its 9 tunes. An update, a remaster, and a remix of their debut album, Memorias de Crónicas Futuras is a work worth checking out if you’re seeking a spot of 80s dark synth wave music.

Based in Monterrey, Mexico, Horizonte Lied is an act specialized in a brand of industrial, dark, and acidic synth-led music, cohesive lyrical concepts, and bustling mixes and arrangements, and their latest release is no different. The album boasts quite a strong sonic footprint. A strain of dense reverb and threatening bass sounds with corrosive synth pads and stabbing leads, all going with the foreboding singing style of the band’s baritone vocalist. The electronic grooves are consistently fresh throughout Memorias de Crónicas Futuras, with the snappy drum machines given a consistently prominent role in the mix throughout these songs. The lyrics, sung in Spanish, encompass a wide array of emotions that are concerned with love and its phases from the start to the end and touch on social topics and faith.

Memorias de Crónicas Futuras is a solid release from a band of dark pop veterans that has a loyal base of followers and a really distinct sonic character that is only propagated further with this release from Monterrey’s Horizonte Lied.

Album: Walking on Eggshells by QUINN STERNBERG

0

Jazz bassist and composer Quinn Sternberg has followed up the success of his previous studio album with another meticulously crafted set of jazz compositions that feature a dazzling ensemble of players and are stunningly recorded and mixed. Walking On Eggshells is a rich, immersive listen that keeps on giving throughout its runtime.

After a short time from the release of Cicada Songs, Sternberg’s successful previous album, he returns with his working band for more of the same conceptual, groovy, and intricate forays into modern jazz. Inspired by the idea of modern-day anxiety, easily aroused by and observed in any topic that can be discussed, the album also seeks solace in the company of others, and how there can be people who can alleviate the effects of all this stress. In delivering this concept, Sternberg mesmerizes with 8 new compositions that are crisply and thoroughly jazzy.

The record starts with arguably its most accessible and tangible piece, and its titular track. ‘Walking On Eggshells’ introduces us to the healthy mixing job executed on this album as it offers a sublime saxophone performance from Sam Taylor, defining the track’s main motif, and its most memorable layer. Healthy electric guitar solos ensue from Nahum Zdybel, as longtime collaborator Peter Varnado bashes the drums tastefully in an intricate performance that is loaded with rhythm breaks, killer grooves, and bombastic fills. The title track is reminiscent of Japanese jazz rock with its modal Saxophone motifs and nuanced rhythmic composition that never stops being accessible and immersive. Bidding farewell to rock music levels of accessibility, the album gets denser with its improv sections and harmonic compositions, becoming purely modal, starting from the second piece. Make no mistake, though, the compositions get more deep and intricate, but never once get too dense to follow along and understand, and comfortable motifs to latch onto are not absent on any of the album’s pieces.

‘Green Eyed Baby’ is a stunning Broadway jazz piece that introduces more saxophone-lead motifs. With a sparkling piano that lays down a fantastic performance, and a juicy bass solo, ‘Green Eyed Baby’ is surely a more improv-heavy composition. Haunting upright bass drones populate the fascinating ‘Ripple’. Noir, silky, and tastefully brooding, this cut is an obvious standout that features a bone-chilling bass performance that summons to mind the smoky soundscapes of Bohren & Der Club of Gore. The hectic and stormy ‘Yuri Gagarin’ sees Sternberg putting himself in the uneasy shoes of Yuri Gagarin as he is doing mankind’s first orbiting the earth from space. With a granular and fantastic drum performance from the amazing Varnado, the choppiness of Gagarin’s space trip is mirrored in the uneasiness brought forth by the drum performance, and the Coltrane-esque saxophone playing. The chill and characterful ‘Meadow’s Murmur’ is another obvious standout among its peers on the album. Like a smoother older sister to the titular piece, the piece shares motifs with earlier Sternberg compositions, and it is definitely the album’s most laid-back piece, even if a storm is readily brewing beneath the piece’s surface at all times. With the least pronounced melodies or motifs, this cut feels like the album’s most free-flowing offerings, and regardless of the actual amount of improvisation happening, the piece is a warm, eloquent, and mature composition that showcases Sternberg’s command of the flow of his band mates.

Walking On Eggshells is full of daring musical ideas that are all effortlessly delivered by a group of masterful professionals that are making it seem too easy. Smooth, flowing, compelling, and intricate, the performances on the album are a clear testament to a very high tier that Quinn Sternberg and his band are operating from.

EP: Ancient Desire by DANIELLE SCHROEDER

0

Drawing her influences from her deep feelings and personal experiences, Canadian singer/songwriter Danielle Shroeder dropped her latest EP Ancient Desire on the 4th of April 2023 in collaboration with many amazing musicians. Ancient Desire is a product and reflection on the pandemic years, so as you’ll hear it has a storytelling mellow style that’ll get you instantly hooked.

Opening with the title track Ancient Desire, Danielle Shroeder sets up her warm sound right from the start. It has an easy-going mellow flow with inviting vocals and deep hearty melodies. The atmospheric elements played a huge role in setting and maintaining the mood, the soothing guitar arpeggios, the heavy bass, groovy drumming, and the well-placed and arranged violins all came together in a solid flow. Moonlight Embers picks up Ancient Desire‘s mood and builds up on it, adding a more groovy pace and percussive flow while seeking more structure progression, all while keeping the chill mood uncompromised. Keep Moving comes next with a soft intro that smoothly shifts into an upbeat groovy tune, taking the record’s dynamic flow to the next level. The piano added a new layer to SCHROEDER‘s sound mix, and the Conversation going between her vocal melodies and the piano reminded me a lot of Dolores O’Riordan‘s work. Pushing more towards a bigger, more dynamic sound, Fighting Injustice comes next. It has a playful moving flow with catchy guitars and vocal delivery that shake things off, putting the listeners into swaying mode with its incredible guitar work and streaming flow. Ending the EP on a highly emotional and melodic note comes Meandering Time. It has some well-written violins and cello that were beautifully layered with the piano and topped by SCHROEDER‘s haunting vocals, in an arrangement that’s giving every element the time and space to shine and be heard appropriately.

Ancient Desire is a solid brief EP that shows Danielle SCHROEDER‘s writing skills and well knowledge of her mood and direction. She managed to keep her mood intact while changing the EP’s dynamics, without compromising her sound or approach. Looking forward to more from Danielle SCHROEDER, Keep on rocking. Cheers!

Let Me In by Nick Lovely

0

UK based musician, producer, director, writer and light painter Nick Lovely is set to release his latest single “ Let Me In” next week.

His directorial experiences include Flu, Something Round, Playback, The Foal and his one man shows such as My Boyfriend the Boogeyman, and The Check In about gaslighting…and now he’s releasing his musical experience “Let Me In”.

“Let Me In” talks about how Nick Lovely wants to be accepted in the artistic community and maybe how harsh this can be…however, he’s not quitting and he wants to put the spotlight on the truth, not like others would like to distort it.

For “Let Me In”, Nick Lovely went for an upbeat musical direction, with summer-sounding synths, pianos, drum beats…and the song is piano focused.

Nick Lovely also explores and experiments with a couple of performance personas which mixes things up and goes hand in hand with the many melodies that make up the song…”Let Me In” could be actually described as a progressive pop song, which is quite unique and fresh.

The topic that Nick Lovely discusses here is quite important and insightful, being accepted and the importance of surrounding yourself with good people.

We hope Nick Lovely’s message reaches everyone and hope it can be the push that drives change.

Nick Lovely, we wish you all the best in the world.

Looking forward to hearing your upcoming releases.

Cheers!

European Swimsuit by R.MASON

0

“European Swimsuit” is the latest single by Canadian duo r.mason and it is a soft rock track with a lot of tender and passionate moments that work together to get its strong lyrical message across.

The inspiration behind the song was a terrorist attack in France that instigated thoughts in her mind about how these terrorists care so much about taking away the rights and freedom of people who are dressing liberally and wearing whatever they want to the beach. It’s a strong notion, carried by a strong musical composition.

The song’s effects and sound production make for a mix of modern, electronic, and soft rock styles…all of which are led by soft airy female vocals that will sometimes soar high and sometimes be low enough to sound like a speech or a cinematic monologue. I have to give credit where it’s due…the way the verses begin with a strong single layer of vocals and then the backing harmonies join in the pre-chorus and chorus was just the perfect way of making the chorus sound bigger and more emphasized in the middle of the arrangement.

The big surprise in this song is how the guitars and drums feel like they have a Lo-Fi or post-rock touch to them for 2 minutes straight, and then after the vocal bridge the effect changes and we hear an overdriven melodic guitar solo joined by an electronic synth. The solo closes the song beautifully while serving as an outro.

To sum it all up, this track conveys a strong sentiment through a passionate and tender composition and killer vocals that you should not miss, in my opinion.
