4 Reasons to Fly by S J Denney

S J Denney presents his newest EP, ‘4 Reasons to Fly’. An Alt-Rock, Folk compilation of four songs that clock in under 20 minutes.

In this collection, the arrangements are lush and keep the listener on their toes. Additionally, there’s the inclusion of many instruments: like a harmonica, a tambourine, a dulcimer, an oboe, an organ, and, of course, guitars… which are a new addition to S J Denney’s composition style.

‘All I’ve Ever Known’ is S J’s latest single. The track focuses on self-realization, being present and comfortable in his own skin, and noting that everyone always needs somebody for support during tough times.

‘And Then You Wonder…’ was the first single released from this EP. The song only features vocals and strings. This song touches on how life was before COVID and how he wonders if we will ever be able to return to life as we knew it before this pandemic.

‘Is This the End?’ is the official closing track, which showcases the broad array of instrumentation that Denney has implemented in ‘4 Reasons to Fly’.

The song is about a dubious friendship. Opening with a surf-style guitar line, it eventually gives way to a vast array of instruments, including the duduk, Hammond organ and oboe.

S J Denney is a singer-songwriter based in Essex, UK. He fell in love with music from a very early age after stumbling across vinyl copies of The Beatles’ White Album and Neil Young’s Harvest.

S J was initially a choir boy and performed in several venues across his local county. His next step was learning to play the clarinet. Whilst music theory gave him a solid foundation, Denney decided to focus on self-learning the acoustic guitar and writing songs. S J has performed in various bands and duos and is now a solo artist.

‘4 Reasons to Fly’ is a great, soft, folky escape to ordinary day-to-day monotony. With the lyrics cover real-life, relatable topics that we all wonder about.

Rhapsody of Fire.

Colour Me Violet by Rachel Walker Mason

0

After years of writing for other artists such as Puppini Sisters, Grammy Award winner Joanie Leeds, Hamilton’s Sharon Rose, winning a number of awards (Woman Of The Year 2020 – Freelancer Of The Year- Community Champion Award), and been inducted into the Indie Music Hall of Fame, British singer/songwriter Rachel Walker Mason released her latest EP “Colour Me Violet” in collaboration with Nina Sundstrom, and produced by Bare Wall Studios and Sundstrom.

“Colour Me Violet” is an intimate and personal piece by Rachel Walker Mason, she said about those it “It’s never felt right to give these songs to someone else, with how personal they are to me. They showcase both good times and bad and hopefully people will be able to connect with them too. It really is me baring my soul on this record.” So, let’s dig deeper into it

With raw production and personal, sincere from the heart lyrics Rachel Walker Mason brings her latest EP “Colour Me Violet”. The 11:29 mins EP is an intense emotional trip mainly led by Mason’s smooth voice, her fluid vocal melodies, and heartful lyrics. Starting the EP with the mellow tune “Magpie Heart”, Rachel Walker Mason used clean acoustic guitar chords, her warm voice, and a dynamic floating vocal melody to send a love letter to her husband appreciating his presence in her life.

2nd song “Pieces of You” is more upbeat with a more dynamic beat and mood. The piano chords gave it a deeper sound and the energetic vocal melody made it a big twist after “Magpie Heart”, especially in its catchy chorus. “Grey Man” has dark and sad vibes reflecting its subject, it deals with being in a controlling and draining relationship. The slow and raw guitar arpeggiones mixed with Rachel Walker Mason’s low tone and emotional vocals were perfect for the mood channeling the feelings of the lyrics smoothly to the listener.

“Colour Me Violet” shows how professional Rachel Walker Mason is, she knows how to tell a story and describe her feelings with words and music creating a simple meaningful sonic experience that’s filled with emotions and harmonies. Looking forward to a full-length and more acoustic experimentations from Rachel Walker Mason, cheers!

Album: Riding a Camel in the Middle of the Sea by Almwaya

Jazz can be hard. Not the easiest music to get into. With all of the dense harmonies, intentionally complicated melodies and convoluted rhythms, it can require a great deal of concentration and mental lucidity to follow along and enjoy. I can personally vouch for that, having spent a very long time in love with the idea of Jazz rather than Jazz music in itself. The idea of sophisticated instrumentation and rich musical landscapes was a very appealing one to me.

To actually get into jazz, I needed mentoring, though, through albums that are decidedly easier to digest, sweeter and more aesthetically pleasing, making the journey of Jazz a much more fluid and enjoyable one.

This group is called Almwaya, and brings you 8 pieces that stitch together the Sahara, the Nile, the Lebanese Cedars, and the Swiss Alps in a delicate but exquisitely crafted tapestry of ouds, synths, and soundscapes courtesy of Maya Aghniadis of Flugen, and Wael Sami Elkholy. A Lebanese/Egyptian duo takes you on a musical trip in “Riding a Camel in the Middle of the Sea,” inspired by the Swiss Alps from a recording studio in Greece.

The first stop is Ducks and Drakes, an ambient introduction that sets the theme that follows on most of the stops of this album. A gorgeous soundscape that puts in mind a Victorian train setting off into a Saharan sandstorm, before it drastically shifts into the other trope on this record. Earthy melodies on the Oud from Wael Elkholy and warm voices humming and fluttering, desperately needing a chill nightly campfire in the desert.

Next up is Ethammili. Featuring Latin rhythms bordering on Bossa Nova. Male vocals carry the first half tenderly and sweetly into a haunting crescendo around the one minute fifty second mark. The second half sees the introduction of alien electronic effects, as the vocals evolve into a rhythmic chant-like delivery, with a backdrop composed of wild flutes flickering away and a sparkly piano. The voices pan left and right and explore their limits vividly, the result is quite hypnotic.

Je Veux Je Peux is up next. A thumping riff on the upright bass introduces the minor scale before the voice and the other instruments start veering off the beaten path, exploring very interesting musical scales that connect the east to the west. The bass line, which is starting to feel a little repetitive, is without doubt the glue that holds everything together. The riff on the bass changes in the last third, featuring an emotive microtonal slide that pulls the heartstrings, allowing the vocals and the oud to play even more tortured and strained passages.

Tahunat Alma, Arabic for The Watermill is a gorgeous number that features a distinct harmonic structure, rich layered voices, words about waves, mills, and riverbanks at night. Very noteworthy are the little droplet-like synth notes that play in the first third of the piece. The second third is very restrained, consisting mostly of just a couple of vocal lines and an oud strumming away. The last third starts with an intense vocal swell accompanied by the introduction of a composed beat and bassline. The restraint of all the elements in the last third allows it to grow to enormous proportions while maintaining its core and purpose. Quite hypnotic and is my personal favorite moment in the whole project.

Next up is Bea, the main single of the album. It is composed around a compressed and wooden upright bass riff, playing an intense melody that features a tritone, along with traditional drums, all playing in 5/4 time, adding up to create a trippy experience that continues to climb upwards until a sweet major breakdown cuts the song in half. The return is expertly executed, and the restraint exercised is again impressive and absolutely immersive.

Yenta gyae is again a trippy number in 5/4 time. The longest track on the record, it features a riff on the oud, layered mumbled vocal harmonies that explore the dualities of unbalance and balance, male and female timbres, the left and the right, the bass registers and the treble registers. An experiment of voices that features the first guitar heard throughout the album is ultimately one that leaves a lot to be desired. Feeling endlessly searching for a home, a breakdown or a crescendo that, in my opinion, never arrives.

Purple cloud takes us back to experiments that worked very well. The main motif playing on the oud reminded me of a piece of Egyptian folk, ‘Mahsoubko Endas’ by Eman Elbahr Darwish. Just me? Okay. The vocals start with an unusual melody, while the bass and the drums carry a strong and present rhythm section along with a distinctly composed chordal structure. An arhythmic medley prepares us for a vast second half of ethereal vocal swells of sweet otherworldly melodies and a complex interplay of a wide array of vocal timbres. It all swells endlessly before disappearing suddenly, leaving us feeling betrayed and thirsty for more.

The last stop is Moonlight Bay. While not featuring any new ideas or tropes for most of its runtime, it stands, to me, as the most picturesque and cinematic piece of the project. A section in the middle that dabbles with dissonance and modal mixture might be the section most packed with musical data on the whole album, difficult to comprehend, but easy to listen to. Four minutes in, something really magical starts. As all the dissonance subsides, the titular Moonlight Bay finally comes into view for a radiant and restrained final minute of mysterious and spaced-out passages from the voice, fluttering percussion hits, and starlight notes on the synths. Perfectly ending an almost perfect musical journey.

I don’t think I find it hard to describe this piece of work. While it’s undoubtedly Jazz, it’s also undoubtedly light and pleasing to the senses. While not overpowering or confusing, it is undoubtedly intelligent and filled to the brim with exquisite choices, performances, and passionate deliveries. It’s a collection of works that explores different lands, different times, different sounds and brings together elements that never belonged together, with endless ease and breathtaking craftsmanship. I love it.

Don’t Say No by Maddisun

0

We feel lost at times and wait for a universal sign, and if life turns us down and its sign says no, we surrender and let it put us down. If you think about it, we don’t need an external sign or approval; we have the capacity to go wild on our own and say yes to opportunities, yes to life itself. If you need a push to do so, you’ll find it in Maddisun’s optimistic anthem, “Don’t Say No.”

Standing up for yourself in front of someone isn’t always easy, but in her latest single, “Don’t Say No,” Canadian artist Maddisun bravely stands up for herself in the face of life’s obstacles and chooses to believe in her abilities. The vivacious single has an infectious vibe that will have you wanting to break free and say yes with all of your power.

Nothing about the single isn’t catchy and dazzling. The peppy instrumentation of guitars, drums, and synths is all atmospheric and will entice you to bounce around cheerfully with your arms open wide for life. The combination of indie pop, rock pop, and power pop taste, along with 80’s vibes, results in an appealing, captivating sound.

The sincere lyrics are hopeful, inspiring, and motivate you to take positive action. A line like, “Inside my mind, I’m bigger than life,” is moving and empowers you to believe that you can overcome any difficulties and build the life of your dreams for yourself. Leaving the best for last, Maddisun’s splendid voice is what stands out in the single; it’s shiny, warm, genuine, with a merry, powerful tone. Her vocals are able to turn you into an energetic ball full of light that is ready to bounce around the globe.

“Don’t Say No” is a song that you can vibe to with your friends literally anywhere. It’s the first single from the upcoming album, “Home is Where the Music is.” I’m glad that Maddisun decided to say yes and travelled to L.A to record this song with PSY Sound Record. And now we can enjoy it, be inspired, and passionately await the upcoming album.

Mettre le feu by Fovelle

Fovelle just released another single, “Mettre le Feu,” featuring MLOW. The artist who is in Québec City, Canada, and part of the SONO record label community, is originally a producer who works with other artists as a producer, lyricist, and a composer like Electric Neon Clouds, Monastere, Loëm, and many others. The artist has been playing and performing across Eastern Canada for over 7 years, from live performances to playing in funk bands. During the pandemic and lockdown, Fovelle found the perfect opportunity to start working on his music and collaborating with his favorite artists all within his comfort zone La Maison Slique which is his home studio. Fovelle plans on releasing a song every month to share his passion with the world. It’s a challenging task and goal to achieve, but he enjoys the dynamic of this challenge and finds it interesting to share his current mood, inspiration, and state of mind with his fans and listeners.

“Mettre le Feu” is his third single released this year in collaboration with MLOW. It’s an upbeat track that will surely make your hips sway and feet move. A song that is worthy of being added to your summer playlist It has the elements of a house/pop track but not with the usual and common synth sound effects used. It’s unexpected and organized, and the melody is so catchy that it’ll keep playing in your head throughout the day. An interesting drum sound is introduced within the song, like a conga or bongo, which isn’t what you expect in such a mood and song vibe, yet it’s interesting and compliments it. The more you listen, the more you will unlock the layers of the song and the different sound elements used.
