The Mistletoe by KARMA

0

As the holiday season approaches, the time for Christmas-themed music comes and one of the first cuts to be featured for the 2024 rotation is Karma’s ‘Mistletoe’. A blend of upbeat, radio-friendly pop, reassuring lyrics, and a minimal, but fruity, composition, Karma’s contribution sets a high bar for what’s to follow.

Memphis, Tennessee based trio Karma is composed of KB, Keymah Renee & Miesha MonRoe, a group of friends drawn together by a shared passion for music. The trio brag about not adhering to any particular genres, instead opting to freeform and roll with whatever works best for the project at hand, and while it would be hard to test the mettle of this claim using just the one song, ‘Mistletoe’ tells us at least the trio could heed no real attention to what a Christmas sound should sound like.

Indeed, ‘Mistletoe’ is paradoxically both unquestionably about Christmas, and also a sound that would be relevant all year round. Perhaps the gentle bells set a strong tone for a decidedly Christmas-y theme, also the lyrics and the warm, approachable vocal melodies and deliveries, mostly undramatic, just welcoming and sweet. The composition is simple and easy to follow with a mostly minimal arrangement to highlight the bittersweetness in the chord sequences.

The production is world-class on this Christmas anthem. A sound the trio describes as a blend between Destiny’s Child and TLC, we can find no better description to put to this punchy, sweet, and soulful early celebration for the holidays of a tumultuous year.

The AJM Show has made his entrance into the world of indie-pop with his striking debut EP Matinée, a seven-track that brings previous fan favourites and exciting new numbers, taking audiences on a journey through funk, synth-pop and indie-rock delivering infectious rhythms and resonating lyrics.

The project has been a long time coming for the man behind the show, Alex Martin, who started the project a few years back, challenging his artistry with a new solo project.

In his words, “It’s indie-pop/rock at its core but has a further blend of influence and instrumentation from further afield, such as R’n’B & funk. The writing for this project began during the latter stages of the pandemic and is self-produced/recorded, also featuring some excellent musicians who’ve contributed. Lyrically, it tackles a variety of themes, such as fracturing relationships longing for youth, and the monotonous life that stemmed from lockdown.”

There’s a clear penchant for grooves across the project, but this root is laced with sparkling synths, pop melody vocals and bright finishing touches. Lush arrangements are all self-produced, showing talent beyond his frontman captivation. In the highest highs and momentous lows, Alex pours his heart into it all, showing why he was so quickly championed by BBC Introducing and the music press.

Good Time Locomotive brings spoken word to new track ‘Stay Close’

0

London-based outfit Good Time Locomotive are back with the latest single ‘Stay Close’, looking to bring a more introspective and softer element within their sound, but remaining a portrait of energised performances and pop-rock blends. Thematically, they explore love and redemption and connect with one another in darker moments.

Opening with vibrant synth tones before descending into charged-up guitar riffs as the intro progresses, the verses then take a backseat. Above a piano, the vocal performance is emotional, growing alongside the instrumentation as new elements emerge from the atmosphere. They introduce flavours of spoken word into their sound, the final piece to a puzzle of anthemic proportions, and a new angle for Good Time Locomotive.

The band explains, “We have all had our fair share of dark moments in this band and this song seemed to sum up both the struggle of those dark moments along with the fact that none of us are an island and that we all need each other to get through the worst times in life”

Forming amidst the pandemic, the band have steadily garnered recognition from their early days writing via video calls to their now ever-growing release schedule. With only a few years on the scene, they are already building a strong following.

Emerging singer-songwriter CON THE ARTIST unveils Best Days, a deeply personal EP capturing moments of heartbreak, healing, and transformation. Spanning alternative, indie, and alt-pop genres, the record is both explosive and introspective, blending dynamic production with raw, emotional storytelling.

The EP concludes with the focus track “Bad Guy,” an acoustic ballad that strips away excess to lay bare the pain and growth of a long-distance relationship marred by infidelity. Through its candid lyrics, “Bad Guy” becomes a time capsule of emotions and a turning point in CON’s journey of self-discovery.

This EP let me lay it all out there, showing every facet of what I love about music. It kicks off with an explosion of sound — distortion dialed up to eleven, vocals saturated and gritty, and drums that hit like a storm. From there, things slide effortlessly into hip-hop grooves and sampled guitar riffs, while the lyrics dig deep. The record ends with the most vulnerable I’ve ever been, revealing dark secrets from my past.CON THE ARTIST

Bad Guy” tells the true story of a relationship turned sour after a partner’s betrayal. Written in the aftermath of a long-distance romance, the song delves into feelings of bitterness, accountability, and eventual healing.

At the time, I was living in London with my band, focused on music and staying loyal. Meanwhile, she was going on dates back in Canada. I was devastated but stayed in the relationship longer than I should have. I hated who I became – angry, resentful, bitter. In the end, I saw myself as the bad guy. Writing this song was the moment I finally healed. I was stuck in bitterness and depression for two years after we broke up, but the day I wrote “Bad Guy” was the day I moved on. It’s a triumph, a release of my pain and acceptance of my own mistakes.CON THE ARTIST

CON THE ARTIST is an alternative indie artist creating deeply personal music that blends dynamic instrumentation with honest lyricism. With a growing fanbase across platforms, CON’s music connects through its vulnerability and relatability.

Tornado of Mistakes by Jay Luke

0

Tornado of Mistakes is the latest single by solo artist and vocalist Jay Luke, and it is pretty much the emotional rollercoaster that its name suggests. Having played, written, and toured since 2003, Jay Luke knows exactly how to play the listener’s heartstrings with his well-thought vocal lines and relatable lyrics.

This new song begins with the sound of a cool breeze blowing, preluding to an upcoming riff storm. Once those riffs start, you feel a strong presence of rhythm guitars, bass and drums playing along with an emotional lead guitar line that instantly reminded me of Tobias Sammet’s Avantasia, except I was immediately struck by Jay’s deep vocals and the rich warmth of his tone. It’s like a gothic metal vocalist came to do a melodic/classic heavy metal song and all the instruments just kneel before him.

As the verse starts we see the full extent of the power of the chord progression that they made from this song, and how it can segue and flow from the verse to the chorus while paving the path for the lead guitars and vocals in impeccable harmony. Although the chorus is big and sounds larger than the rest of the song, it has a strong main layer of vocals (the backing layers don’t feel cramped up or crowded) so that you can decipher the words and feel the beautiful emotion they carry within them.

Last but not least, as if the melodic guitar work wasn’t already mindblowing on its own, the second chorus was followed by an epic bridge section that has a killer guitar solo. The drums and rhythm guitars go really mad behind it, and with the final drum break leading to the last chorus, we got to feel the state of unrest and indeed the “tornado of mistakes” that Jay Luke has successfully incorporated with his intriguing lyrics and emotional instrumentation. If you love the heart of pure hard rock, heavy metal, and especially if you love hearing them go back to their melodic roots and riff-driven nature, then this I promise you this song will meet your expectations, and then some.

“Why So Busy?”: A Sonic Pause for Reflection in a Chaotic World

0

Shweta Harve and Dario Cei’s latest collaboration, “Why So Busy?”, is a soulful exploration of modern-day disconnection, driven by technology, corporate burnout, and the unrelenting chase for productivity. Rooted in an emotional and thematic depth, the track elegantly combines indie pop sensibilities with progressive and folk-rock influences, showcasing the duo’s keen ability to craft music that is both introspective and universally relatable.

The song begins with a delicate acoustic guitar riff that sets the stage for Harve’s vibrant yet wistful vocals. The melody builds with nuanced piano accompaniments from Cei, intricate guitar layers, and understated yet effective percussion. The chorus is irresistibly catchy, intertwining harmonies that evoke the yearning for simplicity amidst chaos. Harve’s lyrical prowess shines as she questions the “illusion of productivity,” imploring listeners to pause, reflect, and rediscover the beauty of being present.

The track’s production is polished yet intimate, a testament to Dario Cei’s mastery as a composer and Serhii Cohen’s engineering, achieved under extraordinary circumstances in war-torn Ukraine. Each element is meticulously placed to enhance the song’s reflective mood without overshadowing its poignant message.

The accompanying music video adds another layer to the song’s narrative, portraying the emotional distance created by a screen-bound existence. Harve and Cei’s portrayal of longing and detachment resonates deeply, complemented by cinematic visuals that bring the lyrics to life.

Still Here by Kristin Venae

0

Rich and venomous darkness is draped all around Kristin Venae’s infectious ‘Still Here’. A colorful piece of charismatic contemporary RnB that defies genre norms and retells the story of a truly bold and beautiful soul, and a talented artist.

Based in Sydney, Australia, Kristin Venae is an RnB singer and songwriter with a sound that leans on soul and on pop quite heavily. Having debuted in 2021, Kristin Venae took a short break from her career as she received treatment for a stage II breast cancer diagnosis. She returns with a bang. ‘Still Here’ is punchy, momentous, melodic, and colorful.

As she now dedicates a lot of her attention to raise awareness for cancer under 40, ‘Still Here’ is a softly anthemic ballad that signifies Venae’s fortitude and iron will, as well as a ray of hope for cancer patients, and an inspiration to other survivors. The subdued pace and gentle tempo on ‘Still Here’, alongside the song’s occasional jazzy and unfamiliar chord all create a delicious and palpable sense of tension that makes for a truly engaging listen, with Venae’s rich and passionate vocals being a reassuring and confident presence throughout the song’s numerous melodic twists and harmonic turns.

‘Still Here’ is inviting, groovy, warm, and unique. A single that stands out sonically amongst its peers, paining Kristin Venae as a talented artist with a singular vision, next to being an inspiring personality.
