Maze by Chris Lanuzzi

0

‘Visionary’ is a title no one should take lightly, throwing it left and right. A lot of traits must appear in anyone we label as a visionary. Defying standards, foresight, and the ability to predict trends before they happen are a few of those traits. Chris Lanuzzi labels himself as one. And on his latest offering ‘Maze’ we dissect the music and judge for ourselves if he deserves such a title.

From NYC, this LP comes to us, consisting of eleven tracks of healthy lengths, running past the one-hour long mark. Musically fractured and rich with processed beats and distorted effects, Lanuzzi says that fans of the likes of Aphex Twin and Amon Tobin will feel right at home here. The comparison is an obvious one. that brand of IDM, defined by heavily processed beats and a rarity (or even a complete lack) of real instrumentation is one that’s pioneered by Aphex Twin and Amon Tobin and is heavily carried across to this album.

The result is a mixed bag, though, sadly. The album starts with a song and an hour later it sort of ends. Something must be said of Lanuzzi’s ability to create and maintain a certain atmosphere for a whole hour, feeling cohesive and consistent throughout. Far less will be said of his ability to create engaging songs, though… at least for me.

While Amon Tobin’s music is defined by a heavy orchestration of sampled guitars, pianos, and drums, adding layer upon layer of richness and complexity, Or Aphex Twin’s ability to warp unnatural sounds and alien soundscapes into feasible and accessible musical scenes, Chris Lanuzzi’s scenes, by contrast, look colorless and a little dull, mostly on purpose. There’s surely no denying the skill he possessed to produce songs of this quality, as my issue isn’t about quality whatsoever, it’s more an issue of the final product itself.

For some, Chris Lanuzzi will not only be a visionary, but also an innovative mastermind. As for me, I’ll remain with my decades-old IDM classics, and enjoy them while I sit and wait for someone to truly redefine the genre for me.

أغنية BREAK MY SOUL..

The Bounceback by Feliciano

Feliciano is a pianist, performer, and songwriter from Puerto Rico. Written, composed, and produced by Feliciano, his new track “The Bounceback,” which was released on June 16th, contrasts with his previous hit “Depression” in that it focuses on overcoming loss and moving on. The Killers, Leonard Cohen, and Cut Copy are among his primary musical influences.

I couldn’t help but be reminded of Grimes’ ethereal pop style when listening to this track’s hypnotic synth and airy piano. Similar to how her music captivates listeners with its initial eccentricity, “The Bounceback” catches you off guard with its whirling synth intro and echoing noises. Felicio’s experimental production, much like Grimes’, frequently forgoes immediately discernible lyrical content in favor of surreal and synthetic voice tonalities.

Thematically, the track appears to be a deconstruction of the summer anthem, and the cover image is almost satirical in this respect. The song reveals itself to be a unique pop melody, full of upbeat hooks, bouncy melodies, 1980s sounds, and a refreshingly unique structure. It is a futuristic reinvention of synthpop and some reggae components set to captivating tunes.

Memory Palace by June Magnolia

A heavenly melodious voice comes from Portland with a fun and exciting ethereal folk music the artist Julia McGarrity is known with the stage name June Magnolia with the smooth and fun voice she released on the 5th of June, 2022 some mix of bouncy, progressive, dark and light tones of music in one album that she called “Memory Palace” that perfectly describes the mixed stories and emotions in her world.

Half Korean princess achieves the ultimate progressive/folk and the harmonic voice she delivers through the music that’s creation is so divine. She created 8 songs in this album that starts with a song called “Ella” which has a fun light vibe and gets you dancing all over the place with a lot of energy and her voice has an energetic good feel about it, June also has a beautiful song that is 2nd in the list “New Love” she starts with playing beautifully on the piano with desirable vocals and her band members that are assembled in this one with a lot of talent that came out and that showed on the video that was recorded on and uploaded on 2021 that innovated great work that works so well with June’s talent.

The track that got me thinking about was “Jane Jane” which was released in October, this was an old folk song that was written back in 1939 by Lila May Stevens that has a buzzing fun vibe to it that get you wrapped up in strings like a puppet and goofing around, a video that was created about this song by June that describes what looks like looping scenario.  “Wisteria” has a jazz music work blended into this song that got me feeling like listening to a piece of old classic jazz music in an old bar in the ’80s in all black and white theme. “Sweater Song” here starts to be a little slow tune and cold breezy weather feel with warm colors of love. “Revolution Around the Sun” Starts with a minute of instrumental music playing that is widely addicting to the ears. “Tristeza” is what I am waiting to tell you about, it’s so far amazing music that makes you feel so light and heavenly lifting your feet going between mountains and by the seaside. “Beneath your mind” is laid on the progressive dark side of her music with great lyrics that are produced through the softest voice “June Magnolia.”

This might be the longest, but it was truly worth listening to this album with a lot of attention it got me at ease while listening to it and got me inspired during my trip. It will get your imagination worked up with a lot of light vibes that will float you up through the melodies of Junes vocals.

“Music, once admitted to the soul, becomes a sort of spirit, and never dies.”

Cosmopolitan V1 by Toby Kasavan

As a classical musician, I find it hard to believe that there are still classical/modern compositions in our current time that can measure up to the late composers throughout the different eras, between Chopin’s fluidity, and Liszt’s atonal harmony or even Copland’s creativity. It’s a very rich genre with lots of layers, color, and texture to consider. Toby Kasavan is a classical pianist, composer, and keyboardist who studied at the California Institute of the Arts. Later, he moved to NYC and started performing and recording in varied styles, like free jazz with William Parker and Daniel Carter, and funk with Bootsy Collins and Maceo Parker. He also performed in other styles like world music and the classical avant-garde.

“Cosmopolitan V1” is one of the compositions in a set of 2, they explore the style and genre in which composers like Phillip Glass, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich adopted, yet with a softer edge. The first track is a 5-minute journey with the piano that will take you through the phases of an ongoing dream, telling an exciting storyline with its ups and downs. A variety of emotions are introduced: a combination of fear, excitement, intensity, and an ongoing conversation with the occasional sweet moments. All while keeping the classical yet modern avant-garde technique and unexpected cadences with augmentations and open chords that catch you off guard and unpredictability of sound. There are occasional lower-pitched and bass-y chords stroke in unexpected moments that caught my attention. Also, a few melodic tunes with trills add a softer and sweeter side to the whole ambiance. You can even trace the elements of jazz and its tunes underneath the ongoing sound.

A very interesting and rich piece to listen to that will set you in a peaceful state of mind, leaving you wanting more.

EP: Maze by Alicia Daydreams

It’s uncommon to come across a 16-year-old musician with the right amount of experience and talent to come up with a track that sounds professional and subtle. I found Alicia Daydreams exceptional in every way; the London-based singer, songwriter, and producer released her latest EP, and it just sets the bar too high for indie-pop artists. The industry is really challenging for emerging artists, so they don’t always receive recognition right away, but the minute Alicia released her 3-track EP and a remix, 2 of them, “Maze” and “Genie”, have already been played over 180K times on Spotify alone. Alicia has over 11k followers on Instagram and her songs are added to several playlists on Spotify like Summer aesthetic, Philippines top 50, Sunset Mode Music – Indie Pop, and many others, which resulted in over 7K monthly listeners.

Alicia’s voice is seductive and unique in style and tonality. It lures you in and leaves you hanging in a specific mood, and surely wanting more. The beauty of the 3 songs lies within their effortlessness; she uses simple elements and motifs played by well-chosen instruments and places them in the right places at the exact right moment. The musical phrases are subtle and to the point, while keeping them rich and interesting. Her orchestration choices are smart in how she placed the simple motifs and themes while aligning the instruments together.

The artist shares her milestones and experiences with her audience through her music. She discusses love, attraction, anticipation, and much more with deep and meaningful lyrics. Each song has a different identity and a trait that defines it, like in “Maze,” where simplicity is key with subtlety. A short yet effective electric guitar solo was played in the song while keeping the vocal line upfront and all the music far in the background. “Genie” has interesting guitar chords strummed along with a swing beat and some retro 70s sound effects. The bass line of this track is short but plays consistent notes. As for “Devil’s promise,” it starts with the sound of church bells and lo-fi sound effects with a dream-like mood.

Daydream’s EP is worth checking out, and it’s a huge step forward for the rising artist who doesn’t seem like she’s slowing down any time soon.

My Italian Romance by Antonella Vizzini

Antonella Vizzini is a Canadian-based performer, songwriter, vocalist, and composer. With a career spanning more than three decades of experience as a vocalist, Antonella’s repertoire includes several genres, such as pop, jazz, and classical music among others. She places a strong emphasis on her Italian and Latino roots in her music and sings in both Italian and Spanish. It’s hardly surprising given that her new album is titled “My Italian Romance” and comprises of classical Italian songs hand-picked by Antonella herself. Her musical origins began at an early age due to the fact her own father was a musician. At 16, Vizzini began singing professionally, first at church weddings and than with various bands around Canada. As her repertoire evolved and diversified, Vizzini took private vocal lessons with the late Bill Vincent, who taught speech-level singing, a method pioneered by Los Angeles vocal instructor Set Riggs. She has won first, second, and the third positions in music competitions hosted by the CNE’s Rising Star and Chin Radio’s Italian Canadian Song Festival on three separate occasions. At addition, she has performed the National Anthem at the Air Canada Centre for Toronto FC and the Toronto Rock, as well as in Nathan Phillips Square

In this album, Antonella blends classical elements with a contemporary atmosphere; and of course, the vocals serve as a focal point for the entire thing as they are quite powerful. This Album’s distinctiveness comes from the variety of genres it incorporates. It has elements of rock, jazz, and even opera. All in all, it’s a fantastic approach to modernizing older music.

The Album’s opening track, “E Penso A Te”, is a magnificent introduction. Antonella’s powerful vocals provide a solid foundation to the song as well as the entire album. The piano arrangement provides balance as well as elegance while still preserving the music’s classic vibe. The harmonies between the two vocalists in the second track “L’Appuntamento” create the song’s delightfully tranquil flow. It’s imbued with an intensely romantic tone. Another magnificent interpretation of an Italian classic, “I’ Te Vurria Vasa” was designed to be performed before a large audience. This artist unquestionably possesses one of those coveted skills, as her performance cannot but captivate the listener even if they cannot understand the language.

“Parole Parole Parole” is simply a song I could listen to forever. The incorporation of modern hip-hop percussion patterns and soulful Saxophone solos adds a new dimension to the production. Vizzini utilizes the Brass and guitar arrangements to impart a groovy and jazzy feel to this track. The style of the composition is complemented by the vocalist’s versatility. Hands down, the best track on the album!

The next two tracks are a contemporary rendition and a stripped-down acoustic version of the same song, “Dicitincello Vuje.” To be honest, I can’t determine which version I prefer more since they both bring something incredible to the table. In the backdrop of the first version’s contemporary arrangement is an electric guitar and stabbing rhythms. Meanwhile, the acoustic version allows you to hear the unadorned vocals accompanied by a calm classical guitar; it’s a fantastic transition.
