Theda Phoenix Unveils ‘Crystal Calm Volume 2’: A Harmonic Fusion of Music and Meditation

0

At the crossroads of music and meditation, Vancouver singing bowl performing artist and singer songwriter, Theda (Theeda) Phoenix has released her latest collection of intuitive music. Setting the energy with crystal singing bowls and ethereal vocals, Phoenix invites listeners into a world of high vibration soundscapes with Crystal Calm Volume 2.

Born and raised in the incredible beauty of British Columbia, by the White Rock shores and a float-home on the ocean of Echo Bay, Simoom Sound, the connection to coastal nature has been integral in Theda Phoenix’s life.

“Shy and introverted as a child, I always had a strong sense of nature that nurtured my intuitive sensitivities.  I discovered my calling early on, through a deep emotional connection to the beauty of music and a profound spiritual experienceI became passionate about the mind/body connection, holistic healing and self-development, and about music as a tool for healing. I love to sing intuitively, create songs in the moment and perform sound healing journeys that inspire others to access the healing power of sound and singing.

These passions come through in Crystal Calm Volume 2, where the singing bowls and Phoenix’s ethereal vocals are the main feature. Crystal singing bowls, made of quartz are different sizes and set to different pitches and frequencies and have the ability to balance brain waves. Phoenix weaves a sonic tapestry, part meditation and part song that transports the listener on a harmonizing inward journey.

With water sounds recorded live by Producer Sam Ryan, of India’s Ganges River tributaries, Phoenix vocally harmonizes with the bowls, her voice accompanying and floating over the crystalline frequencies. The use of binaural recording technology, creates an immersive three dimensional, surround sound experience for the listener, which is enhanced when wearing headphones. The effect is mystical and all-encompassing, lulling the listener into altered states of peace, whether meditating, receiving a healing treatment or simply relaxing.

With the original ‘Crystal Calm’, Theda Phoenix created a transcendent sonic alchemy that was embraced by healing practitioners and listeners seeking deep relaxation, tranquility and comfort. The journey continues with Crystal Calm Volume 2, as Phoenix deepens the experience for her audience with these 9 tracks. Sixty minutes of continuous play creates a pocket of celestial peace and welcomes those with whom it resonates to stay a while. The soul-lifting sounds touch and heal everyone who listens deeply.

“I believe in the transformative power of music to transcend boundaries and touch the soul. With this music, I aspire to create a space for introspection, connection, and healing. I invite listeners to embark on a journey of self-discovery and inner exploration, with the sounds of ethereal vocals, Crystal Singing Bowls, flowing river waters and electronic pads that weave throughout.”

‘Crystal Calm Vol 2’ isn’t just music, it’s a sonic gateway into a deep inner journey, a multi-layered creation utilizing unique binaural recording technology. Crafted with hours of attention to the subtle nuances of each sound. It guides you on a journey into self and the place where you feel a sense of oneness with all of life.

Idiot Grins Unleash ‘Hounds of Mess Around’: A Vibrant Fusion of R&B, Soul, and Alt-Country

0

Acclaimed Oakland’ R&B, Soul and Alt-Country fusion band Idiot Grins have announced their fifth album entitled “Hounds of Mess Around”, released March 9, 2024. Distinctly upbeat and bursting with pep, this energetic new collection exudes a ‘devil may care’ attitude. This is a truly seasoned band who seem completely comfortable in their musical skin, experimenting freely while keeping the mood optimistic and bright throughout.

Idiot Grins have been known to take creative risks, for example collaborating on 2017’s State of Health with the Byrd Sisters. State Of Health featured the Top 10 digital radio hit “Get Busy Dying” and Top 20 digital radio hit “Take it Back”. Their biggest departure, perhaps, was Thoughts & Prayers, released on November 6, 2020. The record was a daring reinterpretation of the Louvin Brothers controversial 1959 country-gospel album Satan is Real.

Now they are back with a fully evolved signature sound with danceable rhythms and a compelling tapestry of complimentary instrumentation. “Hounds of Mess Around” is a perfect road trip album, or just for taking it easy with an ice cold beverage.

This is our fifth full-length album. We all gave each other COVID during one of the first sessions, but managed to recover from that to finish the album in a leisurely twelve months.

Lara Taubman Unveils ‘The Gospel of Getting Free’: A Refreshing New Chapter in Indie Americana

0

After some major transformative work on herself, indie americana singer/songwriter Lara Taubman has produced a new album in her usual style but with a whole new twist. The Gospel of Getting Free, which will release June 21st, tells her story from a renewed, refreshed and positive perspective.

My new album, ‘The Gospel of Getting Free,’ has been like a ship on which I can finally sail home. I see only now that my three albums are primers that guide me out of my own complex trauma to become my true self.

As a New York city die hard, Taubman started her work in the arts as a visual artist and critic. After a period in the wilds of Montana, she was inspired to start creating music, drawing on her passion for artists like Leonard Cohen, Patti Smith, David Byrne and dozens of others as well as her bluegrass-fed childhood in coal country in Virginia. She soon created a style of americana and gospel-inspired folk that brought all her inspirations together.

Taubman began writing music in 2015 and after honing her craft and arriving on her sound, released her first album, Revelation in 2020. With a distinctive voice that’s equal parts Patti Smith and Joni Mitchell and a storytelling ability that rivals both, Taubman also found her audience with this goosebump-inducing release. Her star continued rising with the help of producer Steven Williams, and she released two more albums and a handful of single in rapid succession between 2022 and late 2023.

From the americana, soul, bluegrass and junkyard country of Revelation to the bluesy soul and classic folk of Blind Spot to the Indie gospel of Ol’ Kentucky Road, it’s clear that the central theme of Taubman’s work has been of a yearning to grow and be free from trauma and pain. Especially, in Ol’ Kentucky Road, that theme is clearly spoken and Taubman sings it with so much wanting in songs like “Come to Me,” that listeners will find themselves urging her on, rooting for her.

That need for emotional freedom and true joy is, by Taubman’s own admission, where fans will find her in The Gospel of Getting Free.

The same ideas that drove me to write the songs for ‘The Gospel of Getting Free’ also helped me come up with the songs for the first two albums. What distinguishes this album from the last two are two things. First, I feel more mentally healthy than I ever have. Last summer I began working with somatic therapy for trauma and it changed my life quickly. I immediately wanted more hope in the music as expressed in the songs “The Reason I Was Born” and “Sing Your Song.” Even the songs that are about dark matters like addiction (“Sugar”) and heartbreak (“The Odyssey,”) carry a sense of humor and an inner hope instead of despair.

That’s only one bit of the stories Lara Taubman tells in The Gospel of Getting Free, but it’s all there, in vivid emotional detail, for the listener to discover. Promising to be her most transformative work both musically and emotionally, this album is everything it says on the tin and more.

Jacob ‘NTHNL’ Rudin Embarks on a Deep Musical Exploration with ‘Ontogenesis’: A Fusion of Mind and Music

0

After the success of his debut album, Cosmic Flute, its follow-up Cosmic Flute Rides Again and the number of other new age, ambient and experimental electronic releases flutist and multi-instrumentalist Jacob ‘NTHNL‘ Rudin has done in the last five years, his newest album Ontogenesis may be his most deep-delving work to-date. Literally; it’s meant to delve deep into the mind from both a musical and scientific perspective.

Ontogenesis is the third in a series of albums called the Tranquility Studies. The idea was born in 2020 around the beginning of the pandemic as a way to formalize my explorations into making music to affect feelings of peace and introspection in listeners. This music combines electronic binaural frequencies with performances on a variety of instruments to create soundscapes that are at once calming, poetic and musical. The music uses a technique called brainwave entrainment, which uses certain frequencies to sympathetically vibrate the mind.

As an avid meditation practitioner and lover of expansion and healing, ambient work has always been a central theme to the music of the Brooklyn-based Rudin, who also performs and hosts soundbaths throughout NYC. When he hooked up with friend, fellow musician and yoga instructor Leslie Graves as he was beginning work on Ontogenesis, he and Graves decided to take is a step further with the binaural beats and Solfeggio frequencies. They worked together to create an album whose main purpose was to be a meditation accompanying yoga work.

Originally, this “Music of the Body” (the original title) was conceived as a meditation on and through the body. Over the course of the next year, as I spent more and more time with the material I realized that the album’s progression should exist in time as much as in space.

The way the pair worked was quite unique, with Graves giving keywords for each of the chakras which Rudin would interpret through sound on the piano. The album runs in order of the chakras from top to bottom and even beyond, connecting with some of the extra-corporeal chakras. Ambient and mystical yet highly grounded because of the binaural frequencies, Ontogenesis is indeed an excellent accompaniment to a yoga practice or meditation. It also happens to be an extremely well-constructed and produced piece of music. Its composition is extremely complex, yet deceptively simple, with many layers of music creating that peaceful vibe whilst the heavy lifting (or grounding) is done by those deeper frequencies.

For Rudin, Ontogenesis mirrors not only the chakras but the journey of a life as written in our DNA, taking a cue from Schrödinger.

I came upon the word ‘Ontogenesis’ in Erwin Schrodinger’s ‘What is life?’ A book written before the discovery of DNA which attempts to find the physical basis for life existing and reproducing itself and coming upon many deep and beautiful ideas. Ontogenesis means the progression of an organism from conception through death. As we move up the body, we move through a life: from before the beginning to after the end, reflecting and accepting at every stage.

Fans can reflect on this beautiful work on its release date of July 12, with the single “Synthesis, Memory” already available to preview on Spotify.

Summer Vibes from Berlin! Josh Savage has just dropped his newest EP titled “seeing red feeling blue”. This EP not only showcases an iconic Folktronica sound but also highlights the true magic when the audience engages with the artist to create a masterpiece together. Let me share more about his incredible journey.

The independent musician Josh Savage was eager to share his songwriting and preparation journey in the EP press kit. With his emotionally powerful vocals, the five-song EP will captivate your attention. I appreciate how the lyrical themes revolve around his personal experiences and feelings, inviting you to immerse yourself in his journey. As mentioned earlier, this record was a collaboration between Josh and his fans. It was a remarkable experience as it was funded through Music NFTs, presenting a new model for independent artists. Josh Savage elaborated, “I shared the recording process with my Patreons and NFT holders, making this a truly collaborative effort.”

While I’m not particularly drawn to genres such as folktronica, electro-pop, and alternative pop, I must admit that I thoroughly enjoyed the blend! The skillful incorporation of guitars, pianos, strings, and even synth atmospheres is truly impressive. This record has undoubtedly elevated to a significant international status.

Josh, originally from London, brought up in Paris, and currently residing in Berlin, presents a five-song EP that offers both diversity and a distinct experience for listeners. His clever approach of “short but sweet” in each track, though brief, manages to leave a lasting impression on the audience. I won’t delve into each track’s details now as I’m eager for you to listen to the EP and provide your feedback. In conclusion:

  • “Fight Another Day”: blends upbeat rhythms with melancholic lyrics, emphasizing perseverance.
  • “Echoes”: explores how small gestures can have lasting impacts.
  • “Heaven on Earth”: celebrates finding someone special.
  • “Winner”: advises against comparison, urging self-acceptance.
  • “Sleep on It”: emphasizes patience and reflection for clarity.

Josh Savage introduces a fresh perspective for indie artists globally by involving his fans not just as project backers but also for their input and engagement in the music. I am eagerly anticipating his next release, and mark my words… Josh Savage is destined to be a highly influential artist in the near future. Cheers to that!
