Disco Sally by Ralphy ft.Samjgarfield

0

Seductive, sizzling, and with an intriguing character story in its creative core, ‘Disco Sally’ is an endlessly entertaining and dark piece of synth and art pop from the always-fresh Ralphy.

Based in Los Angeles, Ralphy teams up one more time with producer Samjgarfield. And with the latter taking care of the production, beats, and vocals, ‘Disco Sally’ is the first extensive collaboration between the two artists. And what a collaboration it is. The two-chords minimal arrangement is just right for the hypnotic effect, and the buzzing synth bass line, following a militaristic march rhythm, shows just how versatile Ralphy and Garfield are. The great disco themes are then explored further with snappy, rhythmic syncopation, glamorous string soars that took right back to the 70s, and interspersed vocal utterances that add character without detracting from the battery of cool that is the music.

Revolving around the character of Sally Lippman, a retired lawyer in her seventies who found a new passion in going out dancing night after night in Studio 54. An inspiring character who found her way into song with this elegant-but-sleazy disco cut.

With racing, playful rhythms, and an easy-to-move-to-arrangement, ‘Disco Sally’ ends up being successful to a potent degree. A truly intoxicating atmosphere was woven by Ralphy and producer Samjgarfield on this one.

Merry Christmas Darling by D’Artagnan

0

Amidst the thick smog of turmoil that we all live in, it is quite uplifting that people can still find it in them to anticipate the holiday season that’s right around the corner, and especially if the occasion is as heartwarming and as reassuring as D’Artagnan’s latest single, ‘Merry Christmas Darling’.

D’Artagnan is an absolutely precious artist based in the town of Cheltenham in the United Kingdom. He is a singer, and a songwriter, and along with his brother, the two have made a name for themselves as a singing and dancing duo that would go on and perform in events for such global superstars as Tom Cruise and Michael Douglas. But ‘Merry Christmas Darling’ showcases a different facet of D’Artagnan’s warm artistry.

Christmas songs are common, especially at this time of the year, Christmas love songs are maybe slightly more common. But ‘Merry Christmas Darling’ is Christmas song that commemorates D’Artagnan’s love for his life partner and wife, and with a video shot with the two of them, on the same ice rink that saw their first date and D’Artagnan’s proposal a year later, we have a seriously sweet musical affair.

The song’s gentle instrumentation is decidedly holiday-flavored, with bells and whistles and a jubilant vocal layering job. Perhaps the element that cuts through the most would be D’Artagnan’s own voice, with his piercing, lively vibrato, and silky caramel texture, adding sweetness to the song’s sentiment and lyrics. ‘Merry Christmas Darling’ is D’Artagnan’s ray of light on an otherwise rather bleak day, and for his spirit, we are very grateful.

Bite My Tongue by MIA MORMINO

0

Creative and musical merit in pop with a commercial tendency has been a topic of hot debate since it started existence, and regardless of whether you view commercial pop as senseless drivel made as a cash grab, or as works of art meant to entertain a greater percentage of the population, there can be no denying that artists like Mia Mormino, who seemingly thrive on straddling the border between the two prospects, are in all senses of the words, artists who deserve to be heard.

This Los Angeles based singer and songwriter, and her latest piece of dazzling, glam pop ‘Bite My Tongue’, have managed to ensnare me quite effectively from the first few moments of the song. From the crumbling sound effect at the very beginning to the melancholy laced piano note that drones in the introduction, to Mormino’s vulnerable and exposed delivery, to her witty lyrics, and to her soulful presence, quite restrained and gentle, yet stormy and loaded with emotion, it is all quite eloquent.

Musically titillating, if compositionally simple (mostly), the merit of ‘Bite My Tongue’ seems to be in how accessible everything is. The trap beats are catchy, the pizzicato strings are familiar, and the thunderous energy is displayed in a non-offensive manner, all creating a rather lovely tapestry that highlights Mormino’s vocal prowess, and the words she is here to say.

Incredibly strong, sultry, and meaningful, ‘Bite My Tongue’ will teach you a thing or two about self-love and its implications in our human relationships, and will tantalize you musically while it does just that.

BlackWater by KETE BOWERS

0

With 2 songs already released in 2023, Kete Bowers is spending time masterfully crafting music for his upcoming album…and in the meantime, we can enjoy his mesmerizing acoustic storytelling single “BlackWater”…

…the Liverpool artist created something special with “BlackWater”…an emotional storytelling acoustic ballad of a musical experience…and it is an experience, transcending the concept of a song.

Kete’s vocals carry a lot of weight…and deliver his performance with high levels of emotional energy.

The music is very cinematic like; folk guitar, piano, pads, and a solo brass in the backdrop, elevating the musical experience…” BlackWater” feels huge by the way, and the sonic breadth of it filled the air around me…with each of the instruments playing a role in the story.

…each a character…the guitar feels like your friend along the way, the piano is your guardian angel…the atmospheric pads are the fog you’re passing through…the solo brass is the dream of this journey…and Kete’s voice is the light you’re aiming to go to…

“BlackWater” is such a rich and full musical and vocal experience, a complete movie-like journey in 5 minutes and 22 seconds…of pure emotional musicality.

We wish Kete all the best in the world and we’re so hooked on his approach to creating musical stories, that we can’t wait for him to finish and release his upcoming album…Kete, we won’t be able to hold on for too long…the album, please.

Album: Cultural Canvas by BABA KUBOYE

0

LA based Afrobeat artist Baba Kuboye has created a hybrid, genre bending boundary pushing experience in the form of his latest album release “Cultural Canvas”…a blast to explore, dance to, enjoy and learn from.

With a title like “Cultural Canvas” you know you’re in for an unprecedented experience, not just on the musical level…and let me tell you that you’d be right…

Baba Kuboye is like a musician magician, creating his ultimate musical potion, he’s standing there stirring the musical pot, adding dancehall, hip hop, UK rap drills, big band, saxophone and spoken word…with his ultimate ingredient being his musical charisma of course.

…what comes out is absolute magic.

“Cultural Canvas” is one of the most musical dance album experiences you’ll have in many years.

Baba Kuboye starts the album with the radio edit of “Soft Life”…a very melodic, musical, thematic and all in all such an iconic song to start the album with…the song is rich with melodies, whether musical of vocal…Baba’s performance is soothing and moving…it moves you, it makes you dance…and the backing choir like vocals add so much to the experience…then we can’t talk enough about how the brass section adds to the liveliness and movement…it’s amazingly put together.

“Cultural Canvas” kicks it off on a very high note with “Soft Life”…

The album surely takes the afrobeat essence and mixes in many elements from many genres as we’ve been saying…and that’s how the album is positioned, being created with this unique charisma and presence.

For example, “Chilling” and “Konko” also takes the same musical, dancey afrobeat approach but on a more low-key production…it’s not as in your face, it chooses to take a lean to the minimal approach, but still as musical and as powerful as anything that comes before or after it. The vocals here take a new light with a more musical singing approach here.

“Cultural Canvas” keeps exploring and mixing genres together…so with a song like “Dey for you”, you’ll start with a strong presence of soul music with an afrobeat twist…then we go into the more percussive and natural sounding musical elements with the rest of the song…and the artist also promotes this song as a feminist anthem, celebrating the many influences that have turned him into the artist he is today.

…and with “WA ZO BIA”…Baba introduces a musical surprise with a hip-hop/rap song that is also highly musical and one that incorporates the afrobeat culture in unique and interesting ways.

…and this is just a sample of what you’d expect from an album with so much love put into the making of it…”Cultural Canvas” has been released on Baba Kuboye’s own label, Down 4 Whateva, and has been submitted for GRAMMYⓇ consideration in Best Global Album and Best African Music Performance.

“Cultural Canvas” has 10 songs, 10 musical expressions, 10 journeys that are worth exploring every second of…an absolute milestone in both the afrobeat and dance music worlds.

With an absolute staggering number of stunning musical talents, “Cultural Canvas” has these awesome musicians lend their musical prowess to its creation…

Baba Kuboye (Saxophone Alto , Keys, percussion, Log drum, bass, Tenor Guitar, Saxophone Tenor)

Ogunniyi Babatunde Samson (saxophone alto)

Ik Asanga (Saxophone Alto)

One of the musical highlights for me this year and is highly recommended.

Wishing all the best to Baba Kuboye and all the talented musicians that joined this musical journey…we can’t wait to see what you cook next.

Cheers!
