Désirs de la Basque by JACQUES BAILHÉ

0

Jacques Bailhe’s latest guitar-led composition and arrangement ‘Desirs de La Basque’ is a romantic, instrumental piece that drips with intense, melodic melancholy that makes it an emotive, understated, minimal piece that calls for multiple listens and grabs the attention.

A Los Angeles based musician with a history, Jacques Bailhe has done it all; from touring with Big Lost as a bassist, to producing hundreds of scores for films and commercials, to playing drums behind strippers and chanting Bhuddist prayers in Bangkok, and to giving sitar lessons in Nepal and India. So, obviously, Bailhe knows a thing or two about moving people through sound, and he displays his knowledge adequately through his latest, explosive instrumental, titled ‘Desirs de La Basque’.

Written to express the desires of a French Basque woman, where Bailhe’s father’s family has lived for generations, the piece mostly revolves around a rich, hallowed out, and massive acoustic guitar line that drips with reverb, and a ripping distorted electric that weeps alongside the rich acoustic backing. The piece takes its time to grow, slowly -but surely- building a charming beat that climaxes to a kind of understated, Andalusian rhythm that guides the piece until its graceful conclusion.

With tentative emotions packed into the piece’s minimalistic choice of notes, Jacques Bailhe finds his way to the listener’s hearts with ease. Whether through his delicate finger picking, his thunderous, distorted phrases, or the steady, gradual upheaval of his pace, ‘Desirs de La Basque’ is a sublime instrumental from start to finish.

Another Chance To Live Again by KELSIE KIMBERLIN

0

“Another Chance to Live Again” is another anthemic song by the empowering Ukrainian-American pop artist Kelsie Kimberlin. The song is heartbreaking and sadly realistic. The rising artist is shedding light on the pain and loss Ukraine is living with. However, it conveys the ache and horror that many countries are living in now as humanity is decreasing and aggression is increasing.

Kelsie Kimberlin is a brilliant singer-songwriter, and she demonstrates her exceptional musicianship in every new release. I’ve been listening to her music for a while now and writing about it, and I’ve seen impressive variety in her discography, where we get to experience varied emotions with her music. I have to admit, though, that no song resonated deeply with me like “Another Chance to Live Again” did.

“Another Chance to Live Again” is a heart-shattering song that portrays the cruel reality of war and the innocent who pay the price. The moving song is humane, and spiritual, and carries a bleeding message. Every element of the song serves to send the message, touching all souls out there and spreading hope amidst the unclear redemption path.

The authentic standout component of “Another Chance to Live Again” is Kimberlin’s singing. Her voice is packed with emotion, carrying the lyrics’ weight and giving them a raw, sincere quality. She masterfully conveys the song’s pain, resiliency, and faith with every note, enabling listeners to relate in a deeply intimate way. It’s such a soul-stirring, powerful performance that gives chills!

The emotionally charged lyrics are so powerful and poignant. It’s hard not to loudly sing the chorus along with Kelsie in a crying voice.

“Halleluiah, come and save me.

Halleluiah, throw myself down.

Halleluiah, come and lead me.

Halleluiah, I’m begging for more time.”

The instrumentation is unbelievable! It’s as somber and powerful as the vocals, which makes them a resilient team. The steady beat, the downcast synth, and the dramatic strings all draw the bleak atmosphere, sharing the agony with you.

The sentimental artist takes us on a journey to Ukraine in her music video, where we get to see the wreck and how war takes life away from everywhere.

“I would give it all to bring you back to life here with me once again.

What did I do to ever deserve this pain deep inside of me?”

These lyrics are devastating. I imagine innocent citizens are singing them in every country right now. No one deserves this pain! No one.

“Another Chance to Live Again” is the second of a trilogy about the war in Ukraine. Last month, Kelsie released the first one, “Armageddon,” and I’m waiting for the third and final one. Kelsie Kimberlin has real talent, and she’s using it to spread awareness, solace listeners, and make a difference.

We live in a hectic world where we feel like we need to run all the time without even knowing what we are trying to catch. Ben Bailey’s “Vienna” is a mesmerizing cover of Billy Joel’s that will let you be immersed in a peaceful realm where you can get comforted, rest, catch your breath, and enjoy an ethereal sonic landscape.

Once I saw that the song was titled “Vienna,” I wished it to be a cover of Billy Joel because I adore it and play it every time I’m worried and seeking reassurance. Now Ben Bailey’s outstanding version is going to be the one I put in repeat for a long time ahead!

“Vienna” is a part of Bailey’s album “Canyon Songs: Acoustic Covers,” where he was joined by his childhood friend Tyler Coles, and together they resulted in a dreamy journey that we get to be a part of. In the song, we get to delve into the world of Folk, Americana, and Rock, beautifully structured to feel as warm as home.

The song starts with the banjos’ uplifting melody, and soon enough, Bailey’s melodic vocals enter along with mellow acoustic guitar chords, and Coles’ angelic voice joins. By then, you’ll be entirely hooked. Everything about the song urges you to forget about the world for a while and enjoy the serenity in Bailey’s and Coles’ harmonic, heartfelt duo and the soothing instrumentation.

Ben Bailey’s soulful vocals and sincere delivery will make you feel and embrace each lyric. That’s why this song is a must on everyone’s playlist; it’s free therapy. It’s almost like he wrote the lyrics himself; how he sings them and how the instruments sing along passionately make the song his own.

The musical composition is heartwarming, and the solo part is simply magical! You get to enjoy the aesthetics of nostalgic Americana sound and contemporary execution. The simple yet effective production of the song delivers the essence of the song and its message. By the end of the song, you’ll decide that you don’t want to keep Vienna waiting for you anymore and that you’ll join Bailey and Coles’ dreamy journey.

Automaton (Turn Yourself On) by R.M. HENDRIX

0

To fit in the atmosphere of Halloween and the spooky month, R.M. HENDRIX dropped “Automaton (Turn Yourself On)” with a theme that is chilling and a haunting soundscape. This experimental, electronic pop piece is realistic in many ways, yet you’ll feel like you’ve been shipped to a peculiar realm.

R.M. Hendrix is a musician and producer who started his musical career in 2010. Back then, he started with shoegaze EPs, but his discography really soared with electronica, trip-hop, and ambient. Once you listen to “Automaton (Turn Yourself On),” you’ll get yourself why electronic suits him best, and you’ll witness how R.M. HENDRIX is such an exceptional artist with a creative mind, artistic vision, and impressive musical prowess.

“Automaton” is an almost five-minute journey in a dystopian landscape, where your eyes get to be open to edgy facts and your ears get to enjoy a musical saga. You’ll be immersed in the aesthetics of experimental and electric influences and the dark vibes of the new digital era.

“After the Second World War, monsters filled the airwaves and cinemas. We’re in a new monster era, except no singular horrendous event has initiated it. The monsters are arriving in boring press releases and software updates. They sit with us on sofas, ride in our pockets, and choose our music.”

“We’re in a new monster era,” said Hendrix. In the song, he captures this era through an AI losing control and seeking revenge, and every element of the number conveys this exact scene. The spoken words that narrate the story set the mood for you to be highly engaged and anticipate what comes next. The foggy rhythms paint quite a picture of what this dark scene looks like. The dazzling synth gets you orbiting in this dark realm and energetically witnessing the dramatic action.

Although the overall sense of the song is dark, chaotic, and creepy, it has a danceable quality with its dynamic beats. Maybe, as the intelligent artist put it, it’s a “dystopian dance mix.” It’s like the dance that has to be there to cheer up the soldiers in the battle.

Who’d win in this war? Who’ll be at the mercy of the other? “Automation” is a thought-provoking song that will find its way to the depths of your head. I don’t know if this monster era would be a trick or treat, but I’m sure that “Automation” below is a pleasant treat!

The song has a mellow structure, giving space for the vocals and lyrics to shine, which it should, it’s amazing…and the music creates a perfect background to the whole experience…the sounds are super rich, the production is balanced, full and feels very…real and pure.

The music utilizes many melodic and musical elements that serves the ultimate purpose, which is to move the emotions of the listeners…and it does that exactly through the use of very wide soundbeds, pads, a heartfelt piano, a string sections and drums…but the drums feels like it has more of an ambient feel to it.

Don’t Cry by BAAJ & BAAJ

0

The French BAAJ & BAAJ always manages to tackle new themes through his creative compositions that combine 80’s pop-rock sound with electronic and new wave flairs. His fresh release carries this noteworthy signature, titled “Don’t Cry,” and it is sentimental in a way and will urge you to shake a leg in another.

With “Don’t Cry,” the one-man band BAAJ & BAAJ offers another testament to his skill in crafting an electronic number that is both sophisticated and accessible. The track is both danceable and emotional, connecting with one’s heart and body.

“Don’t Cry” is fittingly titled, as it urges one to be hopeful and acknowledge that it’s not the end of the day if things take a wrong turn. EP: Dark Storm by Domax

0

Domax seems to be a force of nature. With 5 Eps and a single already under his belt since he started releasing music in April of 2022, his repertoire is steadily growing at a rather healthy pace, and with solid vision and a stellar production value to back the artist’s genuine passion for creating music, we can not be more excited to dive in headfirst into any new Domax release.

London based founder of HolyShift, a local record label, Domax is an artist that thrives on building a community and on making music. A productive rampage, Domax is also a guitarist for The Streets and a session musician who has worked with The Sister Sledge, Incognito, and Emile Sande to name a few. On Dark Storm, Domax’s latest 5-track EP we can find a really good display of why Domax’s name is growing, the community around him and his infamy also. The 5 pieces that constitute this EP are easy going, simple, and direct, yet shock full of details that would need a handful of listens to be found and appreciated. From the cool little drum fills to the litany of impactful synth sounds that Domax designed, and then proceeded to carefully place them exactly where they are most needed, the angular lead sound that ends ‘AgainAgain’ is a case in point.

Domax’s music is reminiscent of M83’s older releases, if you’re not in the mood to sob your eyes out. With healthy ambiences, driving grooves, and immersive chord choices, Domax has a unique ability to craft an atmosphere that pulls you entirely in. Take for example the EP’s starting number, and its titular one as well; ‘Dark Storm’ is nearly 6 minutes long and, on paper, it barely introduces any fresh ideas to justify its length, but just because of the grooves, the fills, and Domax’s synthesizer-led soundscapes, we have a great amount of nuance to mull over, getting us easily lost and barely perceptive of the song length. Domax continues to pull off this trick for cut after cut, creating a sense of uniformity that binds the 5 pieces together, and while if you’re not paying attention you can get confused as to when a track ended and another started, a negative point, but put in context, the music on this EP has a strong sense of character that makes the experience wholly immersive, cohesive, and entertaining.

Wonderfully produced, Domax’s Dark Storm continues an ongoing trend from the artist. As his 6th EP in 18 months, Domax does not seem to be running out of ideas anytime soon. Indeed, the man is preparing his lineup for a live debut in 2024, and with his career as a record producer, his band and session careers as well, I would surely appreciate any time management advice from this man.

Smile by Aria ft. Ariel Jones

0

Aria comes back with a heartwarming single accompanied by an uplifting video that shoots upwards with its ambitions to bring people together in a time pockmarked with strife and challenges, and for all it is worth, he definitely succeeds.

Italian veteran artist Mariano Schiavolini, better known by his stage name Aria, is based in San Remo, and is a musical figure known for his humanitarian work against apartheid and stances for animal rights. He is also linked to artists such as Celine Dion, Aline Cooper, and Flea, and has a number of BBC radio rotation appearances under his belt. For ‘Smile’, his latest effort, Aria has teamed up with Ariel Jones for vocals amidst a vast team of musicians to bring to us a piece of rich pop that has a healthy flair of jazz, rumba, cha cha, and world music infused into its sweet, lush texture.

The song’s approach, melodic and melancholic all at once, makes it effortless in stirring emotions. Whether you’re feeling up or down, Aria’s grand ensemble, cozy composition, fulfilling mix, and of course the touching vocal delivery from Ariel Jones, and Nicolette Turner’s endearing words are bound to make you feel less alone.

Aria’ ‘Smile’ is a beautiful effort that shows us that music, rhythm, and dance, do have a way of going through political and linguistic borders and bring people together.

Information (ft. Imperative Reaction) by X-RL7

0

….getting hit in the face sucks…big time…however, if it’s by both the sonic awesomeness and visual amazingness of X-RL7’s new single “Information”…then it’s actually a pretty excellent thing!

X-RL7 is a fictional band, but their presence is undeniable…it’s the artistic result of a brilliant mind, a musician, and an animator, in one super-talented body, Mike Evans.

X-RL7 is both a fictional band and an animated web series by Mike, he creates everything, music, and visuals…and the story of X-RL7 follows their trials and tribulations as they try to make it as a band in a very pixel-art cyberpunk rendition of the future.

The visuals of “Information” are a big chunk of the experience…and we can’t wrap our heads around the fact that the pixel art style is reminiscent of the old point-and-click adventure games, I know because I used to play that stuff, monkey island, leisure suit larry…the list goes on and on…

…but add on top of that a modern artistic flare that adds more details, animations, color, shading, and many modern visual effects. Simply put, it’s brilliant.

Moving to the sonic side of this golden coin, you’ll be treated to some of the best electronic-based music…mixing synth-wave, retro-futuristic elements like the amazing arpeggiated synth…the steady and heavy electronic drums, with some saturation and distortion on top….and a soothing vocals in the midst of all that flavorsome musical tornado…

The music is very cyberpunk-ish, tough, in your face filled with sweet electro heaviness.

…then there is another huge win for the “Information”…the musical composition itself is pretty awesome, very melodic and very percussive too…it’s moving and evolving…it’s super rich, perfectly balanced also on an audio engineering level…this was an absolute blast on all level.

Wishing Mike all the best in life…he surely deserves it, he’s a brilliant musician and an amazing animator/artist…this is simply one of the most highly recommended experiences so far in 2023.

Perfection in a pixel world.

Cheers!
