head//heart by mase J

0

A personal, immersive experience is being delivered to us through swaying, raspy narrative, and introspective lyricism in mase J’s “head//heart.”

“head//heart” is an embodiment of Hip-Hop artist mase J’s personal dilemma; however, it’s relatable to many. Who hasn’t had an internal battle between their head and their heart? Between wanting to surrender completely to the partner and giving them all we have and insecurely taking a step back, being afraid of being vulnerable.

The hazy vibe of the song evokes the cloudy, tangled ideas and feelings that swirl in one’s mind while tormenting his sensibility with conflicting alternatives. The UK rapper utilized a bittersweet performance to portray the conflict between head and heart: his susceptibility to initiating intimacy as well as the fence that toxic masculinity, problems with trust, and personal traumas had erected around his heart.

mase J is a sentimental, skilled artist who uses his music to open up to his dark side, helping himself to cleanse the mess and be lighter, and helping whoever hears him to feel less lonely and be encouraged to deal with their own emotions. The track’s repeated line, “I wish I was dead and gone, I wish I was dead,” exhibits boldly the gloomy, cold side, yet the aerial, rhythmic beats, tender acoustic chords, and harmonic melody offer a peaceful side, making a balance between the blues and the colors.

This is the kind of song you close your eyes and play to enjoy its simple yet effective musicality, taste the characteristic production by POPPA, and feel accompanied in your own mental war with mase J’s tense, explicit storytelling.

London-based Brazilian singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer Call Me Dio is making waves with his latest release, “Together”, which dropped on March 3rd. With just four singles released since his debut in February 2022, Call Me Dio has already established himself as a unique artist with a sound and style all his own.

The song’s mellow and soothing soundscape perfectly complements Call Me Dio’s warm and expressive voice, which is backed by resonating guitar lines and harmonies. To The One’s I Love by Clare Easdown

Artist Clare Easdown based in Menai, Australia released an icy heart anthem for all those with broken hearts and minds on the 8th of March. Brace yourself for a chilly ride into the darkness with this one. Clare is a vocalist and lyricist who collaborates with Jmusicbeats who makes and also mixes and masters the music. She’s inspired by artists like Sevdaliza, FKA twigs, and Grimes. They released 4 tracks in the past month and plan on making even more.

This song is for all the misfits and people who feel like they’re unwanted and unloved.  The overall sound of the song is chilling, melancholic, and deeply painful. We love that she really uses all her real energy and hurt to make a beautiful anthem that can connect everybody. The soundscape is a soft trip-hop sound. It has an ethereal, magical dark vibe. The pace is slow with a really cold vibe. The musical arrangement is rich with direct sadness in the air. You’ve got some slow rap-style drums and snares, and an alarm-like sound effect that is looped at the back of the song creating the whole Iced-out vibes. You’ve got some soft siren-like vocals. You will really enjoy the vulnerability of this track.

Planet Coronet by Marlon Bianco

0

I can simply not overstate how engaging, inventive, and intriguing this song is. A multi-faceted journey of acid jazz with fascinating atmospheres, a rock-solid rhythm section, and a saxophone solo so hot, it can melt the paint off the walls.

Luca Bianco, professionally known as Marlon Bianco is a London-based multi-instrumentalist and composer who moonlights as a melancholic cyberpunk. His music is full to the brim with the grandiose musical statement that’s expected from acid or electronic jazz, courtesy of colorful and dramatic chord progressions, along with a vaporous vibe, courtesy of cloudy, synthetic pads, and a tight, driving groove that gives this piece a cinematic aura. You can easily imagine James Bond driving his open-top Aston Martin in a slow-burning car chase along some luxurious southern European coastal road with ‘Planet Coronet’ playing in the background.

Other than the lush composition, the wonderful melodies, fitting choices of synth, and a deeply, deeply gratifying rhythm section, one can never fail to see that the true shining star of Planet Coronet is the fantastic saxophone performance, delivered by Jonny Chung. A medley of Latin beats takes us entirely away from the established groove, setting a wholly different syncopated groove and making it a base for the sizzling sax solo, before the section ends abruptly and the song is transformed back into the main groove. This whole shift and return is sudden, exciting, and satisfying, as its abrupt ending introduces a shock factor, before the tightness and familiarity of the original groove very quickly take us back to continue grooving along with it, somehow twice as hard.

‘Planet Coronet’ is an all-engulfing experience that’s as fulfilling and approachable as it is cool and left-field. Marlon Bianco’s drumming, bass playing, and songwriting are at full swing, creating an uber-tight instrumental, before Jonny Chung’s saxophone makes the journey whole with some of the nicest lead playing in my recent memory. This song is a trip that’s not to be missed.

No Body by Fernandez

0

Fernandez’s brand-new single is an epic, cinematic foray, boasting gargantuan vocal flexes, a dazzling arrangement of strings, and an unerring, powerful groove, amidst spectacular production and sound design.

Fernandez is a Melbourne-based artist whose sound is as crisp as they come. She emerged onto the scene in early 2022 with a self-produced 5 song EP, which was an introduction to her rich and invigorating sound. Her latest single is just as rich and invigorating. No Body revolves around an atmosphere crafted by epic cinematic strings that call to mind the lush soundscapes of Bond movies, with their sensual and luxurious feel. The strings though are only the beginning of what this gorgeous piece has to offer. The composition is just as full of drama and mystique that brings to mind the exotic charms of Hooverphonic, but on voice and arrangement steroids. Fernandez’s voice is fine and capable, and is unabashedly on full display, as she does not shy away from reaching into her highest registers for the sake of some truly remarkable, entertaining, and musical moments, and behind her for support are lines of hard-hitting, hard-compressed drums and bass, along with densely modulated and inventive guitars. Fernandez’s No Body is an outstanding display of a multitude of talents.

Fernandez’s might have just recently erupted into the scene, but with a consistently brilliant standard of quality, a natural knack for arranging and songwriting, and of course with the help of the talented Greg J. Walker on production duty, it will only be a matter of time before their talent gets the forward momentum they deserve, pushing them into stardom.

I Like it On You by Luch Stefano

0

Luch Stefano’s latest single is a beautiful acoustic number, multi-faceted, arranged to perfection, and performed with love. A sweet triumph of acoustic pop.

The Eastbourne-based Luch Stefano is a singer/songwriter who, on this latest song of his, appears as a love-ridden troubadour. The song starts with a rich, reverb-drenched acoustic guitar intro with fingerpicked delicacy. The rhythmic lines soon morph into a strummed pattern, that soon morphs yet again into the song’s proper shape, which is percussive, melodic, dynamic, and exciting. Luch Stefano’s vocal delivery is sweet and approachable, his lyrics intimate and relatable, even if they are about a mutual crush of sorts, with someone already in a relationship, the simplicity of the delivery just makes Luch’s part comfortable to listen to, and easy to get lost in.

‘I Like it On You’ is beautiful and sincere. Taken from a 17-track album project that Luch Stefano is planning to release this year, this song got me positively excited to hear what more Luch has to offer, as his style of percussive, simple, acoustic-only music is one that I love and dearly miss. I also think that this is a song that’s incredibly easy to enjoy. With gorgeous singing and guitar playing, and a haunting reverb-drenched piano, the few elements of I Like it On You make it a direct-to-heart affair.

Devil In The Mirror by Karen Harding

0

Karen Harding’s latest single is a catchy, personal, relatable piece of simply gorgeous pop from a soul that’s clearly just as simply gorgeous.

Melbourne-based Karen Harding is moving away from her usual emotional ballads, heading for a sound that’s more introspective, soulful, and relatable. Her latest single, Devil In The Mirror, deals with all the unachievable standards that we unfairly set for ourselves in today’s world. Standards of achievements, social standing, and of many other shapes, most prominent of them are standards of beauty, causing most of us to live in a sphere of insecurity and of becoming devils in our mirrors, constantly telling ourselves that we are not good enough.

Devil In The Mirror sounds haunting. The beat sits in a tight, dynamic pocket throughout the song, subtly shifting its weight to create a distinction between verses and choruses. The drums sound punchy and driving, and endlessly simple, like a beautiful-looking column, always there to support a top floor, and that top floor is a pair of innocent synths and Karen’s unforgettable voice and performance. The synths are the creamy, dreamy pad, playing the simple chords, simply. It sounds light, and airy, barely there, yet it adds so much. The other synth is a melodic square bass one, it plays in the choruses, and it plays an infinitely sweet melodic shape that’s bittersweet. Both synths, along with Harding’s voice, create an atmosphere that’s inviting, intoxicating, and stunning.

Devil In The Mirror is one nice song. The arrangement is so skeletal and simple, yet so efficient and rich, it is hard to understand. What’s easy to understand is that all of Karen Harding’s decisions in the creation of this song just worked beautifully, and the result is a song with a personal message, a voice that stirs and haunts, an instrumental that sticks to the ear, and an atmosphere that grabs the attention, and keeps it.

Never See Her Again by Swedish Knightingales

0

Relationships are complicated, which is something on which everyone can agree. And after hearing Swedish Knightingales‘ music, fans of various genres will concur that they are remarkable. They combine several influences in their most recent song, “Never See Her Again,” to present a profound and bitter story.

“Never See Her Again” is the Los Angeles-based band’s latest song that dynamically presents their Classic Rock/Americana hybrid sound, which takes the listener on a nostalgic journey to the 60s, passing by the best of the musical era following it, all the way to today’s fresh execution.

Witewolf on vocals/electric guitar/background vox, Sean “Yard Dog” Smith on acoustic guitar, Kenny Lockwood on bass, and Felipe Restrepo on drums are what make Swedish Knightingales impeccable and ready to penetrate the listener’s whole senses. The song also features Derek Sherinian on piano or organ and Daniel “FatsO” Restrepo on the background vox, which romanticizes the gloomy theme a bit.

The song is like a fatty meal where all the components are well cooked, making one’s taste buds explode from the fiery tang. The final output sounds this polished thanks to the musicianship this act has and how passionately they perform together, bringing the story to life.

The instrumentation carries a rush of energy that flows from the guitar riffs, basslines, and drums, jumping to the fervent vocal lines and offering a coherent, mastered musical piece. All of the elements work in unison to spread the vibe of genre blending and diverse yet aligned musicality.

As the title suggests, it depicts love gone with the wind. The beginning is charming as always, but as some stories lean towards tragedy, the tale is spiced up by the love being forbidden. This is where the balance plays its perfect game, where the lyrical theme is dreamy and melancholic at once, while the melody and rhythms are elated.

You don’t have to have a related tale; the engaging storytelling, infectious interpretation, and appealing delivery will get you hooked anyway. Enjoy listening!

EP: Miss Daisy – Wheel of fortune by Miss Daisy

Independent artist Miss Daisy will release a diverse and eclectic four-song EP titled “Wheel of Fortune” on the 17th of march from Gothenburg, Sweden.

Miss Daisy is an acoustic songwriter and performer and has been for 20 years. She had been performing her songs in Sweden, and she has recently come to the decision of recording her own original material, that’s only been heard by local ears until now.

Miss Daisy and producer Daniel Bergius came across one another half a year ago, and they immediately had musical and creative chemistry, which led to the creation and production of Miss Daisy’s EP “Wheel of Fortune”.

“Wheel of Fortune” features four songs in four completely different styles, which is completely unique about it, and shows the range that the duo of Miss Daisy and Daniel Bergius have together in creating music from all different genres.

While all four songs are stylistically different from each other, they have more in common thematically and in terms of energy level. The whole EP is mellow and melodically upbeat, and that seems to be the main unifying aspect of this record.

The first song on the EP “More” draws a lot from Latin pop, and is a groovy and soulful song about a growing love, with Miss Daisy’s songwriting, singing, and Daniel Bergius’s production, instrumentation, and backing vocals.

“A Little Time” the second song on “Wheel of Fortune” is a reggae tune, going from one continent to another swiftly in this diverse multi-cultural EP, yet, tying the first and second songs are Miss Daisy’s consistent songwriting, performance, and Daniel Bergius’s professional and top quality performance that maintain the energy still going through the EP.

“I Am Running” and “Jag Ser” from the latter half of the EP, and while both are rock songs, “I Am Running” is an acoustic folk rock song in English, and “Jag Ser” is a Swedish pop rock song. This tells that even in rock, Miss Daisy can find ways to utilize the unique range of her musical influences.

Album: Beware Wolves Volume 10 by Beware Wolves

0

The return of Beware Wolves is a most welcome one. A return of one of Americana’s most unforgettable new names who have managed to release 9 albums during just last summer. His releases were cryptic and the effect they had was sensational. With imagery of howling wolves, moon phases, and symbolic arrangement of music with the albums that spelt confidence in his consistent quality, his previous 9 volumes received extensive coverage on Sistra, you could say that we could not get enough.

Beware Wolves‘ conclusion to his anthology comes via an album that runs a little like a double album, clocking in at a whole hour, double his average album lengths, but we’re glad to report that the quality returns, and with it, the confidence.

The last batch of Beware Wolves folk tunes comes devoid of lunar symbolism, bringing the tally up to 101 songs released within the matter of months. The music is still stellar and personal. Beware Wolves’ style depends on a few main elements. An acoustic guitar, strummed or fingerpicked, sometimes with a staccato, percussive style, at other times, chill, and intricately arranged to back up the vocals, which also often feature haunting vocal harmonies that manage to continually spice up the sparse arrangements and never fail to add depth to the sound. The songs of 10th volume might be left overs that did not make to the previous albums, they might be the songs the artist deemed were the best so he left them for a separate release, the reasoning is not disclosed, but I deduce that all the 101 songs were recorded in roughly the same span of time and using similar technology, which makes the sound of the 10th volume just as skeletal and as intimate as all the previous ones, adding score points to cohesion.

Standouts on the 10th volume include ‘Harvest’, an expansive acoustic arrangement with a devastating harmonica part and a modal composition that brings Beware Wolves’s fantastic vocal delivery, main and harmony, to the magical, dreamy world of Lydian tonality. ‘Harvest’ is dynamic and flowing, like a rushing river. ‘Over The Wall’ features a gentle acoustic guitar composition that I found to be lilting and hypnotic, especially with the vocals that jump from low and conversational tones suddenly to high, yearning calls. A charming, simple, and short piece of music. At the tail of this album you’ll find two haunting songs. ‘Worth Repeating’ has a fuller arrangement with a gentle synthesizer, a gentle piece of vocal harmony, and a multi-faceted composition that features surprising twists that make this piece one of the more memorable songs in Beware Wolves’s entire arrangement. One can also not be stirred by this song’s placement, 2 songs from the end of the anthology and by its title which beckons listeners to repeat this whole journey from the very top. And in a massive breach of Beware Wolves law, the alphabetic arrangement is broken in favor of placing the romantic and sweet ‘Good Bye’ at the very end of the album.

Wether Beware Wolves will be returning will more music in the future is, just like every other thing about the artist, open for speculation. But we will revel in the fact that we have a gleaming anthology of 100+ songs from Beware Wolves, with something in there for nearly every one. It is cause for celebration, and we will celebrate by taking his 10th and final volume for more and more spins in the days to come.
