Two Fish by Francis Eden

0

Australian singer/songwriter/producer Francis Eden recently released her latest single “Two Fish” on February 24th, marking it as her third single and the first of the year. After gaining experience as a musician by joining various local bands, Francis decided to go solo and share her beautifully crafted music with the world. She debuted with “Fool’s Gold” in 2022, which was selected as a semi-finalist in the Unsigned Only Music Competition 2022, followed by “Keeping Time” later in the same year.

The lyrics of “Two Fish” are filled with poetic analogies, such as “You’re like oxygen to me And I’m like hydrogen I’m attracted to you baby” and “When we connect It’s grander than a ballroom floor,” conveying the importance of connection and intimacy and the power of coming together to create something greater than oneself.

“Two Fish” is a self-produced and recorded track that Francis created at home. She presents a neatly produced soundscape featuring a slightly detuned piano and strings section backed by a laid-back drum line. What really stands out is Francis’ flawless, emotional, and warm voice, but what really caught my ear was her decision to leave it raw without effect. Combined with the detuned piano and strings, the song has an undeniably beautiful oldies 50’s or 60s pop sound embedded in it.

Overall it is a sweet and neatly produced addition to Francis Eden’s growing discography that showcases her musical talents and beautiful voice.

Take It Back by DaeMarcus

0

DaeMarcus’s sophomore album release has taken me by total surprise. Approaching this album from a fresh-face artist, I was expecting many things, but none of them prepared me for the 43 minutes of pure vibes that I had listening to this. Take It Back is a hidden gem that restored my beliefs in what really makes indie music indie, and in the thousand charms that lie therein.

DaeMarcus is the moniker for Adam Araujo, a Massachusetts native from the city of New Bedford. The one-man band has distinctive sounds that pull from many different, sometimes opposing directions, and the fusion is always done in such a way that serves a narrative, and a vision that Adam has in mind, for results that are crisp, cohesive, and often breathtaking. His music on ‘Take It Back’ can be mostly categorized as synth wave, indie pop, and shoegaze, and thus we can deduce that DaeMarcus’s music hardly resists categorization.

‘Moving Out’ starts the album with a gentle, tight musical hug. The piece has relaxing rhythms and a modal, washed-out harmony that makes it easy to get lost in its air add a couple of sensual synth solos with piercing and memorable sounds, and the result is an album introduction that gets you fully absorbed and ready for more, and more is readily delivered with the next cut, the title song. The longest on the album, ‘Take It Back’ starts with a detrimental grand piano playing consistent, warm chords. The chords create an unforgettable, dramatic tension that will soon paint the entirety of the piece. The vocals are washed out with delay and chorus effects, drenched in reverbs, making their minimalist melodies sound tantalizing and hypnotic. The song’s sparse mix is supplemented right after its halfway mark with a soaring set of synth strings, arranged to perfection to give the song’s 2-chord vamp the grandiose quality it deserves. A piercing, noisy guitar soon invades the mix in a lengthy passage which is where we get our first introduction to the album’s shoegaze leanings, and it would obviously be a crime to not give the main, percussive piano riff some love, as it provides us with the whole album’s most unforgettable hook.

‘The Way You See Me’ gives us atmospheres that would call Slowdive’s greatest hits album home. From hypnotizing beats, progressions, vocal timbres, and melodies, the song is a hypnosis fest. A harmonic shift occurs somewhere before the middle of the song’s runtime and it’s like the third eye has opened. A transformative listen of epic proportions of musical coherence, or to put it in less extreme terminology, it is a seriously delightful and seductive song. ‘Live or Die’ features an acoustic guitar for the first time, next to some interesting instrumental breaks featuring watery guitar solos and peculiar delayed synths, and an arrangement that soon puts us again in that revered shoegaze place. ‘Inside of You’, one of my absolute favorites, would make a chilling synth wave soundtrack for a mid-90-s David Lynch feature film. With its terrific, fuzzy, and creamy synths playing melodic pad sounds, beautiful piano detailings, soulful vocal delivery, and a lulling, moving rhythm, this piece can easily be called the album’s most poignant and romantic sounds. ‘Echoes’ would make another stunning cinematic soundtrack, this timeless synth-ey, and more indie pop. A dreamy, floaty ballad with soaring, purifying noises, this song is a gratifying journey that will keep you hungry for more, 8 songs into the album, and that is an achievement that should never go without celebration.

Do not be fooled by DaeMarcus’s low profile, for he is an artist in every sense of the word. Not only does he put out truly gorgeous songs, he also adheres to a sonic vision he has in mind, and manages to pull it off with graceful effortlessness on his sophomore release. I will keep coming back to this collection of indie gems for a long time, and I’ll be impatiently waiting for more.

How Do You Like Me Now? by Evie Moran

0

The Liverpool-based artist, Evie Moran, is showing us how to get things done in a distinct way with her fresh release, “How Do You Like Me Now?” Crafting a dream pop enticing sonic landscape dipped in balanced sensibilities between dulcet and wild canvas.

Evie Moran is a young star who is only 21 years old, yet she has mesmerizing talents as a singer and a songwriter. Following her 2022 release, “Disconnected,” is her empowering single, “How Do You Like Me Now?” That demonstrates how gifted she is, not only now but back when she was younger since she started writing the song’s chorus when she was seventeen. The single reached its final version with co-writers Ben Hughes and Leo Martin.

“How Do You Like Me Now?” is a getting a second wind type of song that portrays the story of many who got manipulated into thinking they were never enough, not worthy, or did not deserve love. However, they reach the point where they soar high off the toxic relationship, embrace themselves, and know exactly how valuable they are.

All of the components work together to movingly convey both fragility and strength. Even if one has never experienced a similar situation, one may still relate to the story due to how the storytelling is smooth and appealing. Moran’s ethereal vocals carry a gloomy yet vindictive timbre. The expressive, heartfelt lyricism and how it’s soulfully conveyed show how sincere Evie Moran is.

The musical composition, with its dark textures, showcases how fiery, complex, and melancholic the self-growth process is. Nevertheless, colorful rhythms are there to lighten up the mood and give a shiny spark to the overall sound. Each instrument performs a dual function, sounding both ardent and soothing, creating an epic afterglow of an aftermath sense. Complementing the track with multiple colors, swaying waves, and the intense performance of Moran in a pleasant music video that is simple yet helps illustrate the vibes of the song.

The coming-of-age emerging musician has proven that she can push the boundaries of genders, the toxicity of relationships, and the shades of other artists, making something that sounds like her and can be considered her trademark in the pop scene.

Ada’s ‘Moon Rider’. A study in Minimalism.

Moon Rider has positively challenged my perception of what makes a piece of music tick for me, putting the final nail in the coffin of my idea that musical intricacy was a matter of harmonic and rhythmic complexity, and for a challenge, it has been an impossibly gorgeous and easy one.

Ada’s German. She has toured the world and had her music feature in illustrious best-of listings. Tino Hanekamp, author, and the Hamburg concert hall tycoon said about her music: “In the broadest sense of the word, it’s pop. But ultimately it’s music that exudes so much warmth and tranquility that it puts even the greatest bundle of nerves into a state of ultra-fine-tuned receptiveness…”. And for Moon Rider’s case, this description hits the nail right on its proverbial head.

Her latest release is a tiny 2-song EP, and the song in question is its title track. Moon Rider is composed of the ancient 1, 4, 5 minor progression, but the harmonic rhythm sees the lenient and smooth minor fourth chord take the second and third positions in the traditional 4 chord loop, for a sound that consumes you in a soft, story-time feel. The simplicity of the composition allows the music to become a hypnotizing blanket of familiarity, prodded on by Ada’s piano, striking the chords as watered down minor 7ths on each downbeat, with minute and sparse added pieces of ornamental chord hits. Each down beat has a chord, and that makes the rhythm endlessly numbing; the gentle, partially muffled, and reverb-soaked nature of the piano sound makes this numbness soothing and embracing, a perfect tapestry to sprinkle Ada’s heart warming singing on top.

The lilting mystique of Ada’s melodies and rhythmic flow is aided by her low alto voice, which she uses during the verses conversationally, before a call out to the titular moon rider announces the chorus with a gentle lift and a gorgeously written melody. The chorus proper, the piece’s glory and crowning jewel is a study in harmony, where Ada’s voice triples, singing the melody from 3 different starting points. The effect is startling and captivating, and the sound is like honey flowing. Rich, lush, and unforgettable.

Intricacy in Ada’s Moon Rider is equally hard to miss and hard to see. Without paying attention, Moon Rider is by far one of the easiest, gentlest, most soothing and musically unassuming songs that I’ve ever heard, but start to look deeper, and layer upon layer of carefully chosen and placed nuance start to appear before you like a rose blooming. Moon Rider gave me a very clear idea of what i personally seem to look for in music, in my current phase in life, where I gravitate towards art that relaxes and comforts when I’m need of a mental break, but stimulates and invites in the windows of respite when I’m willing to dig deeper for detail and meaning.

Dancing in the Dark by Jun Parker

Electronic Jun Parker will release an upcoming philosophical pop single “Dancing In The Dark” on the 10th of March from Portland, Australia.

Jun Parker is an Australian neo-city pop artist that fuses styles of funk with Japanese city pop from the 70s and 80s. His previous releases have been in Japanese, but “Dancing In The Dark” will be his first exclusively English language song.

“Dancing In The Dark” plays with themes of philosophy and cosmology in a rhythmically irresistible fashion, for beneath the deceptively catchy beat is accompanied by a moral question in reference to Plato’s allegory of the cave.

For those who are not familiar with Plato’s work on the allegory, the question that was asked in Plato’s mind was about the hypothetical of a group being born and raised inside of a cave, where the shadows that lay on the wall are all they have learned about in their lives and all they know.

Imagine an existence of knowing only of the world as such a tiny sliver, where if one were to be freed from the chains binding them to the cave, they would discover much of the world’s wonders and despair at the same time. Imagine the shock when they first witness reality.

Plato proposed that we do actually live in that very cave, and what we see of reality are mere shadows of what truly exists. Perhaps a question this deep cannot be tackled by philosophy alone, and art may be the diffuser of ideas that we need for these thoughts to dissipate.
