Moon Knight

Moon Knight

–  Wake me up before you go go ” وهو المشهد الذي فيه من وقت لآخر كان “مارك” يستيقظ ويتولى القيادة، ولكن سرعان ما يستلمها “ستيفن” وتتدهور الأمور، والذي بدوره -في اعتقادي- يتمنى ولو أن كل هذا مجرد حلم.

Interview with Matyascorvinus

We’re here today with a very interesting Finnish artist and musician who has his own style and technique in expressing his music. Matyas has been experimenting with his style for a few years now that he has mastered it and creating his own terminology for it as he goes.

  • All your tracks’ titles are from nature, is this where your inspiration comes from for your compositions?

Mainly, yes. For me, nature is an absolute entity with its ever astonishing elements and phenomena. Everything in nature is in right place and its beauty is unquestionable. The sounds of nature are the music a man cannot make.

  • Can you walk us through your creative process? How do you come up with the ideas and motifs for your compositions?

Very good question! Everything happens by intuition. I never plan anything in advance. Due to that, I seldom remember how a song was born. There are exceptions, like “In Solitude”, which came out basically in five minutes. In a very stressful situation, an exceptional atmosphere for me; I usually must be in sharp condition and in mentally serene state to create anything.

The creative process is exploring the guitar’s fret board. Pressing your finger somewhere makes a sound. Pressing multiple fingers makes more sound. Whether it sounds nice, I memorize it. And sometimes forget. But I believe that the best material sticks to your mind. Nonsense soon drifts away.

A very crucial point in creating is that I have abandoned all theory and consciously avoided using guitar chords and notes once learned. For me, these things are just restraining and boring. So, if you ask me to strum B minor, I can’t. It’s irrelevant. That’s why I am not playing anything but my own music. Well, I have done couple of cover songs from Peter Gabriel and Gary Numan, but they’ve been done by ear.

  • You also seem to be influenced by and have a background of classical music, do you have any favorite composers or a favorite musical era?

Actually not. Composers and their pieces are quite familiar to me. But classical music usually rings no bells in my soul. Exceptions, however, do exist, like “Tapiola” by Sibelius or “Leningrad” by Shostakovich. But in

general, I really do not listen to it. Musically my biggest inspiration comes from extreme metal (death metal, black metal, grindcore etc.)

I do have a classical background what comes to my style of playing; using fingers. But that’s about everything I decided to keep. That’s why I’m calling my music “pseudo-classical”.

  • “Augmented Ukulele” is a very interesting term to use, what are the challenges you face while using this new approach in composition and performing?

Augmented ukulele basically means using ukulele chords added with bass strings of guitar. It’s a combination of these two. Ukulele does not have bass strings, but its chords can be applied to guitar. For an extra spike I’m tuning my guitar two steps down to bring depth and force in the sound. This is a very common practice in metal.

  • How was creating “Tree of life” different from your other singles?

I wish I knew! It’s one of those songs which creating process has slipped into oblivion. The only thing I remember is that the intro was written a very simple pattern in my mind. I’m very keen on writing stuff in a very stripped down approach, using just couple of strings out of six. For some reason I tend to find satisfying results that way. The simplicity and beauty are the key factors.

However, I call “Tree of life” a “new song”, which means that “In Solitude” once opened a completely new way of making songs. Maybe it’s development, but songs after that piece seem to have more complex and numerous patterns in them. They’re also much longer than my early songs. This is different.

“Tree of life” also came out very naturally and easy. I remember the process being very satisfying. But despite of that I found it very challenging to release the song. It felt like “This is going nowhere”. So, I had to ask opinions from “outside”. These opinions were encouraging, so I released it. Now, I’m glad I did. The feedback has been VERY positive.

  • Who are your main influences from modern artists?

My influences come from many different sources. I like all kind of music and artists. The main influence comes from something that moves my inside. It can be jazz, it can be death metal, it can be bossa nova…you name it. For me, music is a vast field of different things and phenomena. Only its presence is an influence for me.

So, it’s difficult to say who exactly would be an influence. However, there are artists I look up to: David Davidson (Revocation), Rob Barrett (Cannibal Corpse), Marty Friedman (ex-Megadeth) for example. A Finnish singer Pate Mustajärvi is one of my idols…There are so many artists I love/like! They all give something. So, I think it’s right to say, the music of the world is the biggest influence.

Grifter by Kneel’n Rey

Kneel’n Rey released their song ‘Grifter’ two years ago, accompanied by an outstanding animated music video directed by Kennedy Rothchild. Today, the video has over 51K views on Youtube.

‘Grifter’ is the second single from their debut album ‘Atlantium’ which is out on all streaming platforms.

The song carries a psychedelic vibe and kicks off with an atmospheric intro that engages right in with your own imagination.

In fact, the whole structure of the song is different. The overall track’s melody has a catchy, tuneful tune that smoothly takes you to the centre of the song. Even the song’s outro contains a concise electric guitar solo that stays with you.

The vocals are clear and confident. It didn’t go for the usual verses, choruses, and bridges. Instead, it was a flow of original, punchy lyrics with a perfect rhyme about misinterpreting how people see you.

We can happily say that “Grifter” remarkably delivered a new wave of sound from the legendary.

Cursed by Pico Panesa

One of the perks of technology and globalization is how two brilliant musicians from different continents can create art and make music without having to get together and meet. Pico Panesa from Hamburg, Germany has made a habit out of such interesting endeavor, where she usually meets with artists through social media, and they end up working together remotely.

Pico is a hip hop producer, and she likes creating beats of different genres of music, each song released has its own circumstances and the conditions are different. The artist is mainly influenced by US trap and German rap. She has released over 40 singles and one EP from 2021 throughout 2022. “Cursed” was created in collaboration with Nau’die from Nigeria. They connected through Fiverr platform and then kicked it off. Pico created the beat and recorded It in her studio in Germany then sent it to Nau’die, where she recorded the vocal line in a studio in Nigeria. Later, she sent it back to Pico where she did the mixing and mastering. The construction of the song is simple; the sound effects and loops in the background don’t change throughout the song, with a rapping vocal line, making it easy on the ears. The context of the lyrics is sad and mainly about someone who is depressed.

It’s still fascinating how the possibilities of creating music are endless and no obstacles are big enough for you not to create what you want or imagine anymore. There are simply no rules anymore and if this isn’t inspiring, I don’t know what is.

Let Go by Cheap Blended

This band brings back the boy band vibe (which never gets old), Cheap blended a band of five members, Roger Toso: vocals, Gabriele Stegher on guitar and keyboards, Nico Aldegani on keyboards and synths, Alessandro Mattiazzo on Bass and Giulio Pattaro on drums.

Cheap blended based in Bolzano, Italy was formed back in 2019. The members come from different musical projects and influences all within the south Tyrolean scene. They were previous members of AKKU, Homeless Band, Hangloose Band, Lukas Insam Trio, Ago and Friends, Lemon Duke, Grenzland, Machete and Jessato Groove. They were brought together by the desire of creating a project that would unite them all together to have fun and share their emotions and sound with the crowd. The band’s sound and vibe are light and fun, their music is leaning more to funk, contemporary soul, and pop with electronic influences. “Let go” is a laid-back song with a chill, relaxed beat. What caught my attention is how not one instrument is taking over, the electronic beat is sustained throughout the song, the guitar is not taking over and not the main instrument, the bass comes in and out, keyboards have a specific sound chosen for this song. the combination of electronic sounds, synths and keyboard is remarkable, which shifts the focus off the main, traditional instruments. The beat drops and pauses are catchy too.

Diversity is a key word for this band and it’s definitely a strength point for them. The band is in the process of finishing their first EP and we can’t wait to hear more of what they have to offer.

Pop Picks!

0

Popular music will remain one of the most common styles that anyone likes. Well, a decided rock/metal fan like me, I am more into old-school pop, still, I love to check what are the new pop trends from time to time. Well, let’s find out below what I’ve picked this week!

Although, Chole Lilac‘s vocal style is similar to many female modern voices these days, still, it has her own characteristics which makes an impressive vocal indeed. The music is very tight really. I loved how it’s simple and straight to the point without any sophisticated musical arrangements. I believe many pop artists try this method nowadays but fail indeed. While checking more info about her, I noticed that she is one of the artists who is very keen on their output and no rush at all during the songwriting and production process, actually, “10 Things” is her latest single since her last EP, DOUCHEBAG, summer 2020, in which was already acclaimed and features in many top platforms. Check out her tune among other stunning ones below!

In my opinion, Possible Impossible is a pure pop talent. If you gonna classify their style you may say they are just another new electro-pop project, actually, it’s way more than this, because I can there are pop, rock and R&B fused elements that are perfectly blended. “Subtle” is a dark pop tune by Patrick Wayne (Moran) and Trent Park who are the founders of Possible Impossible. They got appraised through their debut single “Oxygen” which exceeded over 100k views on YouTube, landed on Spotify’s Release Radar, and was covered by over a dozen international press outlets. What makes “Subtle” unique is the distinguished vocal tone along with the glamourous pop vibes, although, the song isn’t that energetic in the begining like what I got used to from pop tunes recently, it went much cooler really after the first minute. Ah! Don’t miss the incredible solo! 😉

Follow Possible Impossible on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Apple Music, and Spotify.

‘My Love’ by Gian Majidi is a different pop flavour really. It’s a merge between folk, pop, and Reggaeton. Well, first of, you should know that we’re talking about an experienced academic music teacher, so he is already composing his own music and writes the lyric and graduated from the Sibelius Academy of Music and teaches singing in the same academy. He speaks fluently in 4 languages and his debut album will be released in 2020. Back to the song, I believe using reggaeton beats along with pop elements gave it a great output and mix really. Also, I noticed the English accent is so different maybe based on his Persian origins, in addition to that he is currently living in Finland, but I loved it really because it gives a charm to the track indeed. Find out ‘My Love’ among other tracks through his socials below!

I Believe in You by Maxx Effe

Last month, Maxx Effe, an Italian based DJ and producer dropped his latest release; ‘I believe in you’ an original mix.  You might not come across his name often, but he is currently the resident DJ at the CUE in Porto Cervo in Bologna. At the end of the 2000 he began to be part of the Omnia Tria Group (dance 90) collaborating in musical productions with Manuel Fast Fader and Michele Effe (Gold Lounge Record). He also collaborated with Italian artists in music production and has been performing in clubs in Italy since. Effe is not influenced by a main artist, he is just focused on the house music genre and deep house.

The single has capturing electropop sounds, layers of synths and seductive beat drops, fit for the lovers of the classic house music beats. A variation of groovy sounds that’s impossible not to dance to, a male vocal line with a sweet and soft vibe and a breath-taking saxophone solo that is introduced in the other half of the song. The lyrics are sad, they’re about how his lover left him when he believed in her, he talks about the love and connection they shared and how he now needs to face the truth that she’s gone.

The song is deep and layered, the more you listen the more you unlock the sounds and dive deeper in its layers. The perfect song to listen to on the beach while enjoying the summer breeze.
