الفقرة الثانية في الحفل كانت من نصيب فرقة Paranoid Eyes، الروك العالمية والتي قدمت خلالها أغنيات متنوعة لفرقة Pink Floyd، من بينها: “Any Colour You Like”، “Sorrow” ،”Pigs”، “Hey you”، “High hopes”

وكان الختام مع فرقة Strawberry Swing التي انطلقت في عام ٢٠١٦، واشتهرت بطابعها الخاص في تقديم أغاني فرقة الروك البريطانية Coldplay، أشعلت الفرقة مسرح الزمالك بالرقص والغناء على إيقاع أغنيات الفرقة الشهيرة “the scientist”، “Fix you”، “Viva la Vida”، “Yellow”، “God put a smile on your face”.

Tot és Ara by Carles Gutiérrez

If you ever wonder how years of experience, collaborations, and touring sounds like? This is it. An album very rich in musicality, context, and emotions. Carles Gutiérrez is a guitarist and composer with over 10 albums recorded and tours around the world with lots of bands like: Muyayo Rif, The Summer Lovers, Transit Trio, Estación del Este, Judit Neddermman, 5 de swing, Hypnotick Orchestra or Dani Txarnego. This knowledgeable musician has a variety of interests and encounters, yet they all are linked to jazz.  He was part of the musical writing and composition process throughout his projects. He also composed music for theatrical shows, advertising projects and was part of musical direction and productions of some albums.

With more than 100 concerts a year throughout his varied career projects, what better timing to release your own first album than the peak of your success and prime of your musical creativity? Tot és Ara is an album of 11 songs in total, 9 originals and 2 cover adaptations of “Un trosset de Cel” (Àlvaro Barbero) and “Hymne a l’Amour” (Édith Piaf, Marguerite Monnot). The songs are all instrumental with only one song with a vocal line. Carles is on guitar joined by Martí Hosta on drums and Jordi Mestres on double bass. The overall feel of the album is dreamy, chilled, sweet, and romantic. It takes you on a travel journey throughout Latin America and its rich culture and musical foundations and styles, between Cuban, Brazilian, flamenco, or on a beautiful trip on the European islands in summertime. The album was produced by the artist himself along with Pau Figueres and recorded at Panorama 1526 by Carles Puntí with mixing and mastering at The Sound of Wood by Aniol Bestit, joined by lots of collaborations and features with professionals as Laura Cruells, Jordi Bonell, Pau Figueres, Joan Mas and Alvar Monfort. “Go” is the first song in the album and was released as a single, the percussion line is very remarkable and rich. Each instrument has its own solo line and it’s like they are having an ongoing conversation through a dance, it’s a very interesting combo. “Nadia” the second song in the album is more focused on the melodic line while “Terra” is the only song with a vocal line in the album, which gives it a special place.

Each song in the album falls on your ears differently, yet the same. Each one has a characteristic or a focal point that is different from the other, yet they all give you the same feeling and mood all over. Worth listening to no doubt.

Room by Alex Stanilla

Our artist is a unique encounter, a sensitive, emotional soul who interprets his feelings and thoughts through music. Alex Stanilla, a thirty-year-old independent songwriter, and producer who grew up on the influence of the likes of The Beach Boys, Elliott Smith, The Sopranos, and The Last Podcast on the Left. Alex’s journey with music isn’t recent or based on a whim, he was a very accomplished violinist that he performed in Carnegie Hall at the age of 10.

Growing up he decided to take a different approach in his music and depictions, he mingled his songwriting skills and film degree and focused on cinematic style of music; he says, “My lyrical style tends to take an impressionistic view of films, with the subtext of watching it through a different lens and using it to interpret my life.” Which is the first thing that might come to the listener’s mind while listening to “Room” his latest release. It’s a short, fun romantic song, a poem of about 5 lines that only repeats twice. The more you listen to the song the more you unlock its musical layers and context. It’s surreal, blurry, as if you’re living in a dream. The story behind the song is interesting, he wrote it on his way to his friend’s wedding in summer 2020 with wanting the ultimate newlyweds/honeymoon phase song. It was later released during valentine’s day; recorded by the artist himself and mixed and mastered by Dereck Blackburn of Quiethouse recording. It’s not your typical car ride song but worth a listen.

Buzzcut by Estella Dawn

Estella Dawn is a New Zealand born, US-based pop artist, singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who turns the table on relationships with her most recent single, “Buzzcut”.

With a flow of amusing words to highlight the idea of “Chameleon daters”, people who change their appearance, style, musical taste, and even eating habits to mirror each new romantic partner.

The song is an anthem dedicated to staying true to yourself when getting to know a new partner.

“Be yourself” is the central message of the lyrics, and Estella had been herself when she got into producing music.

Estella’s work speaks for herself, leaving the impression of being a strong, independent artist. Her distinctive voice dynamics are perfect to cover and interpret the real-life topics she goes for.

The arrangement of the song is whole, rhythmic & engaging. The instrumental variety is rich and exciting. The classical guitar riff and the guitar solos in different music parts left a great impression and earmark.

“Buzzcut” is the first single released from her highly anticipated full-length album later this year.

Having already released 17 singles since 2020, this album is the next step up, demonstrating how Estella knows how to incorporate a close-knit mix of musical arrangements, where Estella’s relatable, almost poetic lyrics and impressive vocal skills shine.

Estella is no stranger to our sister platform Rock Era, we have had the pleasure to review more of her work like Salt, Fiery B and I Dare You.

With her undiscussable vocal abilities and genuine composition capabilities, Estella Dawn has the power to capture all your senses, and she’s got over 77K monthly listeners on Spotify to back her up.

50ft Queenie (Live at Ivy Room) by Year of the Fist

Those last 2 years have been a wild ride for almost everyone. The pandemic took its toll on the arts, music scenes and to be fair, almost everywhere else. Yet, it also resulted in new approaches, ideas immersing and remarkable success stories.

One of these were Mr. p and Mike who are the ones behind DCxPC Live, which started between 2020 and 2021 when live performances and concerts were banned, so they came up with live streaming the concerts from different venues online which turned out to be a huge success that they ended up recording it and turning it into an album of live music tracks of different regional bands. The albums were such a hit that they had 4 different releases. One of the tracks on the 4th album was a cover of 50ft Queenie, by PJ Harvey by a renowned band, Year of the Fist. These guys have been in the scene for 10 years with a long discography of 2 album releases, an EP, lots of singles, and sick performances! The band has received a remarkable recognition after touring regionally and internationally and several music videos releases.

50ft Queenie was recorded at the Ivy Room, which is a home venue for the band, where they always felt welcomed and appreciated by Summer and Lani who reestablished the venue back in 2015. The performance was a hit through live streaming with the help of a sound, lighting and video crew, Marco, and Nick.

Although the song is a cover yet, the band made sure to add their style to it. They focused on the guitar riff and the main vocal line, keeping it more upfront than the backing instrumental part. It definitely does add its own flavor.

Timeline by Goofy Cow

How many times do we listen to a song for us to decide to press “add to playlist”? Twice? Set it on repeat a few times? That’s not the case with “timeless”, by the time the song ended, I was ready to “add to playlist”. It’s very rich in musicality that there must be an element or two to relate to.

Goofy Cow is a Czech metal band who was founded in 2015 with previous singles and extended plays that made its way from national and European radio stations all the way to North America as part of Hiddenbands project. “Timeless” is quite the leap from “Another way” or even “movement nation” released in 2021. In this single the Duo collaborated with Sigi & Brambi from “Sunset trail “who added more elements and changed the direction of the song essentially. Like the coordination between the drums and guitar line in the chorus or the crescendo and build up in the intro. Yet, the influence of the band duo is still apparent in some parts like the main melodic line. The interference of Sigi & Brambi added more diverse elements to the song, it combined softness, aggression, density, shallowness. Its diversity represents the everyday life of humanity, how everyone is so absorbed in their own stories, life and ‘screens’ that they don’t pause and look around them. How we got disconnected from each other and stopped noticing ‘the old man’ who requires help, yet no one sees it as a metaphor in the lyrics. This diversity was also reflected in the team they worked with; Martin Jarka’s who worked on the music video that took place in location Olomouc Rockstar Café & Bar, also Filip VIček from the band John Wolfhooker who worked on sound and mastering.

“Timeless” opens a whole new diversity and variation for the band and keeps us eager to find out what they’re up to next.

No Contest by Sounds of Defiance

0

All the way from Guatemala, this heavy metal band made its way internationally and left its mark from the very first single release. The band is influenced by the rich history of rock and metal genre. They incorporate different genre like indie/alternative, goth, dubstep, and others that fit with the core of the metal genre resulting in a new sound and style.

The band started in 2019 and was formed by Filo López on Bass, rhythm guitar, synths, and programming. With Julian Gardem on vocals and rhythm guitar and Jonathan Ramos, a guitar virtuoso on lead guitar and programing. The band started working on their singles and first EP in 2020 during lockdown and released the first one in 2021; “Colossal” which caused a lot of buzz internationally all the way to the USA local radio stations. By their second single release “KNIVES” the band has already formed a large fan base and stronger international recognition throughout USA, Europe, Russia, Brazil, and others. Their 5th single release is “No Contest”, it’s different parts and flavors are inspired from Metallica’s guitar style, breakbeat drums inspired from the prodigy, Alice in Chains harmony structure all wrapped in one. What caught my attention was the electronic/modern sound effects used in the vocal line and the theme of the song, which isn’t very common for metal songs, resulting in a very interesting, new sound.

The band is very distinguishing in their broad taste, rich musicality and with playing around different genres. They have a strong plan to what’s next and planning on touring soon after their major success with their singles’ releases with no intention of stopping soon.

Lavender Brown by Maja Laura

0

A woman who does it all; Maja is a Polish pianist, lyricist, composer, vocalist and to top it all, she started her own record label and currently publishing her work through it.

The artist is currently working on her debut album that she is publishing through her own record label “Maja Laura records” in which she refers to as the temple of truth. “Lavender Brown” is her second track from her upcoming album “Bardo” which in translation means “transitional state”, born from a painful and personal place after the artist went through a breakup. “Lavender Brown” is not your usual alternative/progressive song. It’s vague, mysterious, personal, and unexpected. The Lyrics, mixing, music, and vocal line are all by Maja where she chose to use modern and unusual sound effects. The theme throughout the entire album is a compilation of her favorite quotes but in this song, she focused on two stories and a quote from the Harry Potter movie. In the first verse and intro of the song she mentions a date and tells a story with true events that she went through in her past relationship while using a specific electronic loop and depicting a robotic sound like in her vocal line. Then verse two comes in with a different story and the electronic loop and theme changes, moving to the last theme which is inspired from Harry Potter she chose to use distorted, psychedelic sounds as depiction of unreality while maintaining the same music for the chorus.

It’s not every day you come across an artist that does it all and as passionate and authentic as Maja; she chose not to compromise in the way she wants to express her true self to the world.

Dead Before My Eyes by Absinthe Green

0

Absinthe, a multi-instrumentalist musician who experimented with a lot of bands and instruments in different countries across Europe before forming her own band; “Absinthe Green”. A trio band where Absinthe is the main vocalist and on rhythm guitar, Villy Pirris on Bass and Harry Mason on drums who was her former bandmate when she was part of RandomWalk the Greek dark metal act.

“Dead before my eyes” is first single released from their upcoming debut album “Of Love and Pain” that is produced by the remarkable Hiili Hilesmaa who worked with renowned artists, HIM for instance. The intro of the song reminded me of Metallica’s style and progression of chords, the first thing that caught my attention after the intro was how upfront and aggressive the lyrics were. The message that’s being delivered through the lyrics, the construction of the music and even the video clip is quite powerful. After all, how many girls are brave enough to send such a powerful message to their exes after a traumatic relationship and break up? The chorus has a very interesting backing choir of men that sound like a cheer rather than a scream. Aside from the catchy guitar riff which is the main musical theme, there’s a very catchy rich guitar solo and lick that blows your mind away.

We’re quite eager to listen to the rest of the debut album which will consist of 11 tracks that will probably take us on a journey of love, hate, pain, recovery, and empowerment.
