God Complex by Mirnaz

0

Pop wonder Mirnaz returns with a compelling pop take on her previously released acoustic success ‘God Complex’. An affair of synthetic strings that ooze with charisma, a confident vocal performance, and a hard-hitting, street-conscious production.

Born in Baghdad and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan, Mirnaz is a singer and songwriter with a diverse background that fuels her curiosity, passion for music, and unique perspective on life and things. ‘God Complex’ starts with the somewhat controversial statement of “I stopped believing…” as the Nelly Furtado-inspired instrumentation fires up behind her. She then proceeds to describe the toxic relationship that she stopped believing in. Intelligent lyrical twists call upon her iconic Middle Eastern influences like Amr Diab and Kadim Al Saher, while the danceable groove mirrors her influences from the opposite side of the globe, like Jay Z and Beyonce.

In the end, Mirnaz’s ‘God Complex’ is rich with character and color. Intricate vocal harmonies and a nuanced arrangement that makes smart use of production details that efficiently fill the gaps intentionally left by the minimalistic composition. Diverse, chic, and cool, Mirnaz is onto something big here.

Narcissus by Izzy Pingrey

0

There can be no denying Izzy Pingrey’s ability to pen down a catchy piece of pop. With her delicate compositions on acoustic guitar and piano, and her eloquent and often deceptively deep lyrics, Izzy Pingrey returns after her recent debut success ‘sick of it’ with ‘narcissus’.

Based in New York city in New York, Izzy Pingrey is a singer and songwriter who takes delicate and intricate matters, often from her own life’s happenings, and turns them into charming pop tunes. The fantastic ‘narcissus’ sees her delve into her childhood passion for Greek mythology, and the story of the son of the river god Narcissus (can you guess what his issue was?).

Izzy’s moving arrangement features primarily a minimalist shape on an acoustic guitar that’s rhythmically consistent and driving, while sparkling piano notes fill the air around it. Izzy’s vocals are beautifully layered. Multiple melody lines intertwine to form the lush vocal arrangement of ‘narcissus’, on top of which most of the song’s weight is loaded. The poignant lyrics are about Izzy always pouring too much time and effort into her relationships with people who never do the same for her, ultimately that she can never control or change them, and deciding to invest her time into better relationships with more giving friends, and hopefully into writing more songs.

‘narcissus’ is sweet and immediately catchy. A direct suburban pop hit that makes use of Izzy Pingrey’s beautifully calculated and controlled deliveries, her deep and meaningful lyrics, and her musical mind that knits everything together with touching melodies and harmonies. At just 17 years old, there’s a lot in store for Izzy Pingrey.

EP: Silent Exit by Club Solitaire

Washed away bedroom pop environments, melancholic synths, sad stories, and a lot of passion poured into 2 musical sketches that form the stunning debut of Club Solitaire.

Based in Moorestown, New Jersey, Club Solitaire is the solo music act of 21 year old college student Zachary Kowalski who has kept his music making desires -and abilities- a secret from his family as he honed his knowledge enough to debut with grace in his 2-song EP ‘Silent Exit’.

Zachary chose the name Club Solitaire to reflect the feeling of being surrounded by people but continuing to feel alone in spite of that, a feeling that somehow translates into both his songs. Created to tell a story of Kowalski’s latest unfruitful relationship, the EP’s 2 songs are fluttery and airy, each concerned with a specific phase of that relationship.

We have the first cut ‘Fine Dining’ that introduces us to the sound of Club Solitaire, which comes across as heavily inspired by sensational French duo Beach House. The song’s minimalistic composition and arrangement, built on 2 chords in a perpetual cycle, surrounded by a swirl of breezy synths that play a lilting melody that gets occasionally interrupted by quieter verses. Lyrically, the song talks about the earlier stages of a romantic interest when the parties involved tend to play to impress each other, often resulting in not-so-honest situations. The second cut is the more somber ‘Mental Pictures’. A song about the recollection about the what-ifs after a relationship comes to an end. A reflective song with another minimal composition and sincere-sounding vocals that mirror the earlier releases of Beach House.

Silent Exit is a charismatic debut that introduces a fresh face to the scene. Zachary Kowalski is self taught and carries a ton of potential for more nuanced releases in the future. The debut is warm and lush and well thought out, as well as well worth the time.

Album: Birds of Paradise by Melissa Jones

0

Melissa Jones’s latest and first studio release is a smorgasbord of delicious RnB and neo-soul that comes lush with twirling gospel choirs, sensational -and genre-appropriate- bass playing, and rich arrangements, highlighted by Jones’s vocals that effortlessly stand out with their soulful sensibilities and nuanced deliveries.

From the world capital of  jazz, the Brooklyn-based Melissa Jones is a singer and songwriter whose style comes across on her debut as an exceptional fusion of complex jazz, neo-soul, funk, and RnB. Titled Birds of Paradise, Jones’s debut is a healthy collection of intricate tunes that go all the way from the experimental noise fests to the lilting and graceful soul stunners. Bound together by the steady fist that is Jones’s consistently quirky vocal performances, and by the warm and roomy production courtesy of Errick Lewis, the album is a coherent set of 8 tracks that are all equally enriching, but not at all equally accessible.

The album’s first half is decidedly denser than its second one. From the shorter album introduction ‘Make it last’, a song that features a bombastic drum and bass performance, with a tight and snappy snare that perfectly compliments the bass’s ocean deep tone, to an intense one-two move of nuanced soul-jazz cuts that will be testing to the uninitiated. Starting with ‘Without You’, the first of the album’s truly stellar bass performances, the harmonically shifting song is a dazzling display of musicality from Jones and her co-performers. Grateful words, acidic composition, an avant-garde choir section that has a mind of its own, creating interesting, intertwining, and challenging textures, the testing song is lush and rewarding. After listening to ‘Mood Booster’, on the album’s leading singles, it becomes clear that ‘Without You’ was just a test run. The song’s memorable descending melody introduces dissonance on top of a brooding, stomping rhythm section, as Jones’s hypnotic melodies waft the song along. One of the album’s longer tunes, the piece progresses to feature experimental vocal layering as the whole arrangement artfully melts into a creamy later section that takes out harmony and melody in favor of lushness and textures.

The album’s later half is a rewarding -and remarkable- display of musical, accessible, tasteful, and colorful acid jazz and soul. From the three consecutive cuts of ‘Take a chance on me’, ‘Right by me’, and ‘I don’t mind’, each with its own addition to the sound of the record, the songs feature outstanding texturing, words, arranging, and are captivating displays of one the album’s stronger winning cards, the bass playing. ‘Take a chance on me’ is Jones’s take on the Broadway jazz sound, mirroring one of her stronger influences, Erykah Badu. Romantic, seductive, and rhythmic, the cut’s heavy swinging feel induces a gravitas that makes the song pulling. ‘Right by me’ is a rhythm marvel. With its shaker/percussion-based groove that’s fragmented and held together by one of the album’s best bass performances, the song features an unforgettable mood shift at its halfway point that took me completely by surprise. The silken smooth bass and pads of ‘I don’t mind’ lean on to the acid part of acid jazz. The song’s jazzy composition and fretless bass performance make it one of the album’s creamiest and most seductive tracks, definitely a favorite of mine. Those bass fills should be outlawed.

Conceived in a time of hardship, Flowers of Paradise honors Jones’s late mother, whose favorite flowers were the colorful and fierce namesake of the album. Melissa Jones pulls off something truly outstanding from the depths of loss, ending up with a selection of healthy songs that are rich with music, soul, feeling, intention, color, and purpose. A truly wonderful album of passion-filled sounds.

Bloodshot by Sunny Court

“Bloodshot” is the genre-bending result of collaboration between artists Apollo Rising and Sunny Court…both of them put their all into this production and also both of them put their mojo print on the song in their own unique ways…

The song also releases along with a music video with high production values and multiple sets…that is not an easy feat to pull off…

“Bloodshot” also visualizes the duality of human and art…among many things it tackles along its lyrical journey…the music video translates the musicality of the song in a very important way, the change of mood and energy between the trap production parts and the more hyperpop energetic ones…

The song tackles strong conversations about addiction, unhealthy relationships, mental health struggles, anger, self-actualization, and escaping a dark past.

The song has very huge and crushing trap production in place, exploding 808s, trilling hi hats and groovy beats…with the hyperpop section having a more tongue-in-cheek approach but also in a very musical way, even some punk guitar riffing attitude and past punk drum beats…

“Bloodshot” was birthed as session files being sent back and forth between Apollo and Sunny…until they completed it and decided on giving it its name.

We can’t wait to see what this collaboration has in store for us in the future…in the meantime, we’re wishing both of these artists all the best in life with their personal and professional lives.

Cheers!

Anuther Sunny Hulliday by MICK J. CLARK

0

Mick J.Clark, the UK-based singer/songwriter is an artist for all people and all ages…he has been on the iTunes Singles Chart six times and the Album Chart once, he made it into the official 64th Grammy Nominations for his Album ‘Causes’ and his single “A Song Has Gotta Swing Like Sinatra”…with more than 1 million listens on Spotify, Mick is not stopping, not even slowing down…in fact, he’s pushing forwards and onwards more than ever.

Looking at Mick’s mountainous body of work you can find something for all people, many genres, many moods with his signature unique charisma and mojo of course all of his songs…

…speaking of unique mojo…let me tell you about Mick’s “Anuther Sunny Hulliday”.

This is one of the more unique songs that Mick crafted for his audiences…first of all, it has 2 music videos on Youtube…one is the official one, which visualizes the lyrics and uses a montage of holiday footage to show the upbeat energy that comes from enjoying a simply great holiday…taking some time off and just having fun.

…the other music video is rather a unique one…so, if you type in on youtube “Anuther Sunny Hulliday Dance Video by Mick J.Clark” you’ll find the first result there to be a dance video of a parrot dancing to the lyrics…and this is something that Mick actually believes could be beneficial for parents so they could use it to teach their kids something that can actually positively affect them, being hopeful and to look for happiness… among other concepts.

The music for Mick’s “Anuther Sunny Hulliday” is a mix of pop and rock with a very upbeat and positive attitude…it’s a happy song at its core and that reflects on all aspects of it, the core message is happiness…and you can see that in the holiday montage music video, the positively energetic music production and evident also in the dancing parrot music video…Mick is enjoying making people have a good time…while learning something or two about being happy.

We need more artists like Mick, people who want to make the world around them better by making people happier and aware of finding this happiness.

Mick, we thank you for your efforts in making the world a happier place, we can’t wait to see what you have next for us…it’s going to be a blast, we’re sure of it.

Wishing you all the best in both your personal and professional lives, you deserve it.

Cheers!

Brawl by SYNECDOCHE MONTAUK

Visually stunning, aurally outstanding, artistically crafted with tact and vision, ‘Brawl’, and its accompanying lyric video from Synecdoche Montauk are musical moments to cherish. Ones that tell us that language is never a barrier when it comes to a good piece of music with heartfelt emotion.

Based in London, originally Russian, Synecdoche Montauk is the stage name for singer and songwriter Savva Rozanov, who once believed that to make your birthday wishes come true, you must blow out all the candles in a single blow, which is where he drew his inspiration for a lyric video for his song ‘Brawl’ from ‘Acume’, his latest album.

Created and co-directed by screenwriter Nikita Nikiforov, the serene soul pop of ‘Brawl’ is complimented by a classically composed scene with subdued colors that easily evokes still-life scenes from Renaissance art. The words aren’t too bad either. Quite the opposite in fact. Lyrically poetic, the song’s words are dense and open-ended, a joy to interpret. The video’s slowed motion, one-shot technique, and minimal text fonts blend well with the colorful elements of the scene. The festive hat, in a sad blue color, mixes with the wine bottle to provoke the inner child inside of every confused adult. The confetti explosion, timed to the song’s restrained crescendo is touching, while Rozanov’s unchanged, distant expression speaks loudly to the general apathy our current day and age seem to have enforced upon us all.

Brawl’s video is cold but in a stirring way. Embracing, cool, and chic, beautifully colored and shot, a fitting accompaniment for the stunningly ambient piece of music, ‘Brawl’ has just gotten elevated.

Utopia by TARA HACK

0

Taking us back to the 60s protest songs era, Tara Hack, the New York-based singer/songwriter graces the world, our hearts and soul with her latest song “Utopia”…

Tara’s message to the world is to stand up for your right and imagine a future filled with justice and equality…

The itch to create “Utopia” and its message actually came to Tara when she was seeing the riots in Portland and the attack on the Capita… That inspired her to pick up her guitar…and she found herself playing the music of “Utopia”…

Tara’s message needs to get out and reach everyone in the world, literally and nothing less…

“Utopia” starts with a victorious attitude and manages to keep it up throughout the whole song experience…

…it starts with the staccato strings and marching drums crescendo…then into Tara’s angelic and emotional vocal melodies and rich lyrical prowess…

The song keeps building up from there till it reaches the point of victorious fireworks…the beat kicks in and maintains the groove of the song.

“Utopia” has many iconic vocal lines and melodies…and you will find yourself easily singing these lines and melodies in no time. It has this kind of power…and it unleashes some kind of underlying emotions of pride that other songs rarely trigger.

…something else has to be said too…the storytelling elements of “Utopia” are masterfully crafted to perfection…the marching bands style snares, the very proud harmonica, and the huge patriotic choir filling the air…and this is not just for Americans…Tara’s message can be applied to everyone in the world…it’s a message of hope in a very dark time in world history.

A much-needed beacon of hope in these turbulent waves.

Tara, we wish you all the best in both your personal and professional careers…we can not wait to experience your upcoming releases…we can’t wait to hear more and more of them.

Cheers!

Árvores by MARIANA MASETTO

0

Mariana Masetto brings us a new experience through her latest single “Árvores”…along with a hypnotic and mesmerizing music video…she takes us on a journey of self-exploration…and what a journey it is…

Mariana is based in Ciudad de Buenos Aires, Argentina but she filmed the music video in Brazil…in the ‘Jardim Botanico do Rio de Janeiro…it’s botanical garden of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil…the gardens give this hypnotic feeling I was telling you about, of course along with the minimalistic but effective videography, we get into this dreamy journey…

“Árvores” was inspired by the book “The Secret of the Trees” by Peter Wohlleben and is dedicated to the famous Brazilian percussionist Naná Vasconcelos…it is like a present from one artist to another.

“Árvores” translates to “Trees”…and when seeing the music video, it will trigger something of a connection with nature…specifically the trees…

The music is dreamy…cinematic…and meditative…add on top of that Mariana’s angelic voice and you get yourself a unique experience…

…it’s full of percussive elements of course…it’s dedicated to a famous percussionist after all…

“Árvores” was composed and produced by Mariana Masetto & Ariel Gato…they knew exactly how to craft a hypnotic experience and utilize Mariana’s amazing vocal talents to give us and the world this experience…

…and with a very important message as the cherry on top, “Árvores” also stands as an important song that needs to get out and reach as many as possible…the message here is that we need to take care of nature, take care of the trees.

It’s a rarity to see a song that has this kind of direct message…or even at all especially when it comes to nature and preserving it…but Mariana’s “Árvores” is here to help with that.

Mariana wrapped her message in a mesmerizing package, that is of course “Árvores”.

Mariana, we wish you all the best in your professional and personal careers…your message about taking care of the trees and nature is an important one that needs to reach everyone…

Cheers!
