EP: Lights Out by HANGTIME

0

The latest release from Hangtime comes ready with glassy textures, industrial soundscapes, stabbing synths, and intricate production that would compare favorably with some of electronica’s bigger names like Prodigy or The Chemical Brothers, but with a decidedly more eclectic persona unique to the eclectic duo.

A twosome that hails from Socorro, New Mexico, and Seattle, Washington, Hangtime has got the hang of creating experimental electronica that’s far from alienating to the casual listener, and their latest EP ‘Lights Out’ is a testament to that skill. On ‘Lights Out’ the duo draw from a wide range of influences, both sonic, aesthetic, and visual, to draw together three tracks that span from the chill Trip Hop of Massive Attack to the pulsating experimentations of Aphex Twin, and doing so with confidence, and electrified grace.

The short offering starts gently with the stabbing ‘pwn-age’. Wholly instrumental, this first cut starts with a quirky melody on dry-sounding synths before the acidic, gliding sub-bass comes roaring in. The intricate rhythms are dense while remaining easy to follow, and the cyclic harmonies are consistently engaging, with the relentless repetition making them hypnotic. Gradually increasing in length, and scope, the band follows with the title track. The Massive Attack influence is sharpest on ‘lights out’, at least to my ears, and specifically their 100th Window era, arguably their most hypnotizing and drawn out. The cut comes with more intricately layered grooves, this time more brooding with the slow tempo and more acidic textures. The processed vocals are eerie and suitable, the nuclear waste sub bass is menacing, fitting to the chosen chords, and running for nearly five minutes, this piece is a testament to the duo’s ability to grab the attention with what seems at a surface level like minimalistic mixes with few elements. With a track inspired by Aphex Twin, and another by Massive Attack, Hangtime pulls another one with the final track ‘Imadeit’, this time probably inspired by The Chemical Brothers’ more hip and groovy electronica, visible via the more straightforward grooves. ‘Imadeit’ is more than 6 minutes long, and during this time the duo takes us on a rhythmic trip that moves through different sections with fluidity that’s hard to pull off. But the duo does it, going from the jungle grooves to the funk grooves, to the interjecting phases of relative silence or pounding arrangements. Doing so, the duo has got a few chords and acidic pads, and a few processed vocal samples to lean on. From such few elements, the duo manages to keep the attention on their soundscapes effortlessly going for the relatively longer runtime.

The latest offering from ‘hangtime is immersive, varied, and consistently high quality. Richly produced and nuanced, the only gripe I had with the EP was the uninspired cover art which seems to be inspired by some early 2000s Japanese anime. But I guess I can be wrong, and I also guess that if you’re here for the music (and you most probably are) you are not going to be disappointed.

Home in my Heart by Luna Keller

0

Luna Keller is a German singer-songwriter who pens amazing folk and folk-rock pieces in English. Her latest single, Home In My Heart, is a super catchy tune with a melody that’s easy to follow and lyrics that stick in your head the moment you first hear it.

The song has a smooth guitar chord progression with a strumming pattern that hit home the moment I heard it. The first thought that came to my mind when I heard the guitars here is that Luna could easily win any of the famous talent shows or contests out there, cause this sounds like a much more honest and touching performance both vocals and instrumentation-wise.

With that being said, the way Luna enunciates and melodizes every word is so heartfelt that it gave me goosebumps. The song begins with Luna’s vocals and the effects are little (if any) giving that raw emotional vibe that usually producers kill or take away from artists.

All in all, the song’s production and elements are balanced and the emotional weight of the song is carried with so much power and passion. I bet you this song’s chorus will remain stuck in your head for days on end.

Be Free by Tallulah Rendall

0

This is my second time reviewing the great singer-songwriter Tallulah Rendall whose voice I fell in love with since I heard her ethereal rendition of the Gayatri Mantra. Her latest single, Be Free, uses that same voice in a totally different manner. While the song is still folky at its core, there are some amazing and different elements that took this song to the next level and I’ll be sharing some of them with you now.

To begin with, the song has a very beautiful tone and effect in its guitars that are accompanied by a harp in the intro and verses in the most angelic way you could possibly think of. The moment Tallulah’s grandiose voice joins the melodies, you can tell this is a vocalist that knows how to do her job so well. The emotional weight of the song is carried so effortlessly by her soft passionate malleable voice and the intonation is pin-point accurate…it’s rare to find a voice that sounds like an instrument of its own nowadays.

The backing vocals add some more density, and the guitar strumming becomes more intense after the verse progresses into the chorus. There is a short refrain with some staccato humming/adlibs after the chorus too which really got me screaming in my chair from how perfect it sounded.

As the song fades out after the last chorus/outro section, I was just left wanting more and more. The amount of replayability that every element here packs is unbelievable, and we have the producer(s) to thank for that. Tallulah Rendall has once again written and performed a goddess-tier masterpiece that deserves to be a regular on your playlists because of its uplifting mode, soul-nurturing vocals, and heavenly instrumentation.

Pisco Sours by ARLISTON

0

Arliston is one of those very special and unique indie pop duos out there. Their latest single ‘Pisco Sours’ was my means of discovering these guys and the greatness they pack in their pieces. It’s arguable that this genre of indie/alt pop was more popular 10-15 years ago, but let me remind you that there was never a band or artist that the press didn’t compare to others or call a copycat of someone else…you won’t find that here with Arliston.

With vocals that are easy going and soft guitar and synth instrumentals, this song may be just a little bit reminiscent of artists like Hozier or Passenger from that whole 2000s indie era, only in the sense of being part of the same genre/style and probably appealing to the same demographic of fans. But otherwise, the synth sounds are unique and unlike I’ve heard before, the electronic percussions are so catchy, and most importantly, the layered vocals work so well. While we have one lead vocal line that’s mostly low-pitched and grounded, we get a lot of backing accents and adlibs that consolidate this line into its place with the melody and inside the listener’s head. I found myself humming the song and memorizing its melodies before I got to read or even know the lyrics.

The bottom line is, this is a track that doesn’t care about appealing to the tropes of a certain subgenre or style, but rather about the emotional honesty of the singing, and that honesty subsequently brought so much authenticity that you will find this splendid track to be both catchy and unique at the same time. Highly recommended.

Doorway by VISSIA

0

Doorway is the latest single by Canadian Alt-pop artist VISSIA. The song is accompanied by a music video that shows Vissia in a mixed fantasy world that’s part space sci-fi and part Western flick, and I truly enjoyed the artistic vision they had with it. From horseback riding in space to having a tea party with aliens, this video spares no grand and imaginative ideas and utilizes a green screen to make this Space-Western idea as accurate and as excellent as possible.

The song begins with vocals, synths, and drums, and shortly after the guitars, bass, and choirs join. The intro didn’t make me expect the song to have choir parts, but here we are. The choir parts feel as essential as the lead parts, especially during the chorus. As far as the instrumentation is concerned, this is a pop-rock song in every sense of the word; the drums hit hard, the bass lines are clear, and the vocals pack an energetic and uplifting power in them. What I loved the most is the overdriven lead guitar that they used sparingly and how its brief parts greatly add to the song and emphasize certain sections efficiently.

All in all, this is a track that’s so unique and original you can’t group it with one subgenre or nuance…it’s pop, it’s rock, it’s alternative, and it’s none of them at the same time. The drumming pattern and the bass lines make you think it will get louder or heavier, but it follows a melodic arrangement instead, breaking everyone’s expectations and then exceeding them. If you were looking for a pop-friendly candidate for a chart-topping hit that’s not repetitive or similar to what radio stations and playlists usually include, this is the song for you.

Naked by Avi Kytes

0

On Avi Kytes’ latest single, we are presented with a cut of sheer soul that’s richly ornamented by interesting harmony, engaging melodies, intricate production, and honest, open lyrics that are delivered via a crystal clear performance.

Based in London, Avi Kytes is a singer and a songwriter who is now on his second single of his upcoming studio album, titled ‘Sour Kisses & Goodbyes’. For this latest single, ‘Naked’ comes beautifully adorned, musically and lyrically. Featuring a dazzling vocal performance on his latest of four planned releases for his new chapter. Kytes’s sound comes across as intimate, seductive, and soulful, which all blend really well with the artist’s persona, displayed on cover arts and through his lyrical choices.

On ‘Naked’, a sleepy soul pop stunner, Avi is exploring the need to communicate and merging it with our need for intimacy. Through smart words that are a product of an analytical mind, Kytes paints an easily accessible portrait of a protagonist that a lot of listeners would relate to. Through accessible words and accessible music, Kytes creates a soundscape that draws you in. Through a descending jazzy progression, pulsing rhythms that are imbued with a coastal feel that is then amplified by wailing synths in the background and waves of lush pads in the front.

Through a beautiful production job, a singular vision that’s inspired by a personal vision, Kytes drives forward the song with an artistic fist of iron, giving us something sublime on ‘Naked’.

Album: Mercy by Bloodlin3

0

2 cities…Paducah, KY and El Paso, TX…

3 artists…2Severe aka Stephen King, Reinman Quiji aka Blackrein and Mallachi aka Miggidy…

1 goal…paying homage to the 90s hip-hop scene while putting their own mark and twist on it…

These awesome artists have crafted an album with 9 hard hitting unrelenting songs that will both take you to the golden age of hip-hop while also taking you to the future of it…welcome to “Mercy”…

The album starts out with a narration intro that establishes the scene and sets the expectations…only for the artists to blow through these expectations, breaking the rules and unleashing awesome music with brilliant vocal flows and exceptionally unique music.

…with varied moods and emotions, “Mercy” really checks many boxes for many different moods…you have something edgy like “Execution Day”…fast, hard hitting, orchestral, epic…

…and they also have something very chill and laid back like “Where did all my homies go”…

A very 90s sounding experience…the FM keys, the wood block percussive sounds…

…but…whenever they get on their 90s mojo, they always put their unique futuristic and avant-garde musical and lyrical spin on it…the music brings the nostalgic feeling and the vocals bring the futuristic spin.

“Panic Attack” is a vocal flow beast…it hits hard with a very witty lyrical approach while also being backed up with an epic musical production…and with the awesome features in this song…and all of this album, this elevates the whole experience, once again, making it tower above the competition.

The album has a lot of featured artists, and each one of these artists adds so much to the experience…they are in it 120%, not just passing by, but they put the sweat and blood into it.

…among these awesome features, they have some legendary features from Bizzy Bone, Krizz Kaliko, and DJ Michael Watts…just sayin’…

If you like old school hip-hop, but want a new spin on it and something that really takes it home…”Mercy” is an amazing album that will quench your thirst and keep you hooked on it for some time…

We can’t wait to see what these guys have next for us…until then, we wish them all the best in life, both the professional life and the personal one…you guys deserve the best.

Cheers!

Fuego Mami by DV Beats

0

Producer DV Beats just released a new summer vibes track titled “Fuego Mami”…it’s both bright and edgy, for the mornings, but also for the nights…it is a very good example of the duality of the artistic nature of humans…

The composition and production approach is quite unconventional and unique…the intro, which could be also considered as the verses is filled with bright summer emotions, it has bossa nova guitars, a fun uplifting musical composition and very simple and relaxing percussive and drum elements…

…saying that, when the track mixes things up, it goes into some kind of house overdrive mode and goes deep…now, it’s as if we’re transported from the morning light of the summer to the dark, neon filled night of the same summer…dance floor packed with club goers…

DV Beats managed to capture both the day and night emotions of summer and put them in one musical experience giving us both…a very smart concept…

The guitars sound catchy, very melodic chord progression…the beats, when they kick in, are full of energy and they really go full power…

“Fuego Mami” is a song for your whole summer day…

We are looking forward to experiencing more of what DV Beats is offering…wishing him all the best in his professional and personal lives.

Cheers!

Wonderful You by Frank Joshua

Frank Joshua’s latest release “Wonderful You” is a mesmerizing and dreamy journey into a very unique and unreal sonic realm…a journey we’ve been waiting for, without knowing…it changes everything you’re normally used to…it really knocks you off your feet with all of its emotionally charged elements and excellent sonic production values.

Frank is based in London, England and “Wonderful You” is actually his 26th release since 2020.

“Wonderful You” has extremely solid cinematic storytelling elements with both its sound and its visuals…

Let’s start with the sound…

The huge sounding oceanbeds of pads and synth elements in the background are absolutely mountainous and masterfully crafted…it’s ever evolving like the motion of the oceans, like that in the music video…we’ll get to that in a second…

Frank’s vocal performance is absolutely nailing the mood and goes hand in hand with the emotional energy of the music…both the music and the vocal delivery are mesmerizingly emotional and stage worthy.

Adding to that ever evolving nature of the background pads and sounds…the piano in the foreground is excellent and it drives the melodic story of the song into valleys and mountains, acting as an emotional locomotive.

Then the percussive and beat section comes in…this is perfectly minimalistic…it could be the first time I describe something like that…but it is…it is the embodiment of ‘less is more’…actually even though its drums, it’s adding to the dreamy and hypnotic nature of the song.

Even the masterfully placed strings adds so much value even though it is sparingly used…but because it is strategically placed.

Moving to the music video…we can’t say a lot, but we will say this…

It comes straight out of a dream…masterfully crafted and edited of course, it really captures the essence of the dreamy hypnotic nature of “Wonderful You”.

This could be one of the most highly recommended songs of the year so far…so just go and give it a go right now.

Frank, we wish you all the best in life, you’re absolutely brilliant and we fell in love with “Wonderful You”…we literally can’t wait to see what you have next to release…it’s going to be an absolute blast.

Cheers!

Rise (feat. Bravo Bonez) by LEARNINGTODIVE

0

Kiwi artist LearningToDive is here with his third single to date. The stunner ‘Rise’ comes with a really distinctive identity that is executed with taste and grace, fusing genres and influences fluently to present us with a song that effortlessly carries its weight in the realms of alt-rock that grows more crowded by the day.

Hailing from Wellington, New Zealand, LearningToDive is a producer, arranger, and multi-instrumentalist who is featuring Bravo Bonez on his latest release, ‘Rise’, and Bravo Bonez is the alter ego of LearningToDive. Yes, it took us a moment too. LearningToDive is a musical identity dreamed up by Bonez to express his more serious topics and views on society and the planet, distancing these cuts from his usually upbeat and retro releases under his name.

With ‘Rise’, we have a cut of alternative rock that’s deliciously restrained and brooding. Via a menacing boomy bass line and filtered guitar riffs, both featuring more space than notes, and pounding grooves, the cut is perfectly stomping, and with Bonez’s monotone delivery on the dry verses, perhaps pulling a page from the book of Faithless, the lyrics shine through with ease. Telling a story of a life dotted with deceit and harassment, ‘Rise’ calls for its protagonist to rise above it all and claim victory, and LearningToDive masterfully pulls this off through contrast. From the menacing and acidic verses, sung in a dry pan delivery, and with the mix remaining relatively dry and minimal, inducing a hypnotizing gravity to the sound, Bonez then drops a chorus that’s as lush and as gratifying as is sonically possible. With the introduction of an airy synth pad, tremolo strings, and his expansive melody and expressive delivery, on top of the same familiar boomy bass and guitar lines, sufficient contrast is created between chorus and verse to give the whole arrangement meaning and purpose. Beautifully done.

‘Rise’ is a song beautifully orchestrated and executed. Bravo Bonez pulls off a winner that’s intelligent and deep, and just menacing, cool, and dramatic.
