What We Call Love by My Glass World

Indie rock duo My Glass World are back with a belated video for ‘What We Call Love’ off of their acclaimed 2022 release, ‘tree.shadow.piano.’, and it is as good a time as any to rediscover some punchy and weighted indie rock from a seasoned group.

Based in London, My Glass World is a duo who are into writing meaningful songs with social commentary reverberating through their lyrical and musical themes. ‘What We Call Love’ was written in Scotland, before getting finished in Famous Times in Clapton. Written in the wake of the epidemic, the song handles misinformation, a phenomena we’ve all been bombarded with in that dark time, eroding our collective trust in almost all news media. An event that is still ongoing until this very day.

The new video is stunning. A colorful display of the shared humanity that binds us, with scenes of vast deserts and ancient landmarks, right adjacent to crowded city streets. Interspersed with gusts of color, the video tends to look surreal at points, in service of the song that’s playing along. ‘What We Call Love’ is a rich piece of music. Warmly arranged with boomy drums, confident and effortless vocals, a litany of distinctive synths that provide everything from background pads, to sudden melodic stabs, to fluttering sound effects. All sounds chosen fit together, giving the song a primordial feel that makes it sound like an ancient story being retold.

A beautiful piece of music just got a music video to match it. While the video doesn’t contain footage of the group, or give us any insights on the origins of the sounds forming this lush cacophony, it is still a pleasing and meaningful video, well thought out, well shot, and well edited, and in good taste with the music.

Should’ve Known by Livi Jacobs

0

Livi Jacobs’s Sophomore single is a relatively short piece of rich and peppy soul, loaded with pop appeal.

Based in the Floridian Punto Gordy, Livi Jacobs is a singer and songwriter whose acoustic, driven, and percussive sound has already been in full display on her previous single ‘Goodbye’, released only a few weeks back. This time, with ‘Should’ve Known’, Jacobs is putting on a more danceable and upbeat show.

‘Should’ve Known’ is a warm fusion of blues and soul, put in a chic guise of punchy, acoustic pop, highlighted by Livi Jacob’s impassioned and capable vocal delivery. A talented singer, Jacob’s delivery on this song remains largely restrained throughout, but her delivery is interspersed with a few belted lines near the song’s end that effortlessly display the level of vocal prowess that she possesses.

Not necessarily breaking any compositional or production grounds with ‘Should’ve Known’, Livi Jacobs resorts to crafting immediately catchy and exciting pop that’s full of soul and personality, assuring her of an audience that will continue to grow the more songs she puts out.

Album: Hommage à Jon Hassell by Lorenzo Cimino

0

Lorenzo Cimino’s latest studio release is a 4-part composition influenced and inspired by American master jazz trumpet player Jon Hassel, where Cimino fully embodies his instrument in a series of equally harrowing and gorgeous musical pieces centered around the emotive and expressive capabilities of the instrument.

Trumpeter and composer Lorenzo Cimino is based in the Italian town of La Spezia. An academic in trumpet jazz composition, Cimino’s sound on the instrument is effortless and fluent, displayed in a stunning dynamic range to his deliveries as well as in graceful phrasing that makes listening to his compositions easy and enjoyable even to the least initiated.

Carrying his influences on his sleeve, Cimino’s ‘Hommage à Jon Hassell’ is a dedication to the masterful Jon Hassell, one of jazz’s greats when the instrument is concerned. Paying respect to Hassell’s search for a timbre capable of resonating with the human condition, Cimino’s pieces on this record immerse the listeners in different and varied landscapes, from jungles and deserts, to supermarkets. There’s little more than the man’s trumpet and its overdubs to populate the entirety of this set of compositions, yet what Cimino manages to achieve, haunting, chill, eerie, and noir, using only one instrument, defies belief.

From the musical sputters that trail off on the first cut, to the precarious phrases interspersed with howling primates on ‘Soffio al cuore’ to the Victorian industrial landscapes of ’Il grande viaggio’, and the chilling chopped voices on ‘Search for a new world’ Cimino crafts meticulous sonic paintings using the expressive range of his instrument, and a very smart use of samples.

Cimino’s ‘Hommage à Jon Hassell’ is an album of mature and calculated experimental jazz that is going to be, while off putting to some people by definition, easy to appreciate and enjoy to the larger majority, courtesy of Cimino’s fluidity as a trumpeter, and of his lush vision as an arranger and a composer.

Closer by Stereo Print

Catchy summer electro pop is all the rage now, with it being the start of summer and all, and Stereo Print are here so offer their help; a piece of soulful, sun-kissed, electronica with traces of funk that’s bound to get you in a mood to move.

London based Stereo Print are here with ‘Closer’. A piece of euro pop that’s crisp and richly produced, ‘Closer’ features haunting and low-key vocals, melodic and laidback. The vocals are varied too. From the main vocal part, to the processed, sampled bits of female ad-libs that provide a rich point of contrast, the battering, funk beats are heightened via a delicious piece of bass playing and a lush sounding funk rhythm guitar. The chilled vibes of ‘Closer’, seeping everywhere from its aforementioned instrumental parts to its soul progressions, make it a very sensual and flowing sound that would sound equally good being blasted at full volume in a club, or in your car during a nightly road trip.

Stereo Print’s summery helping of electronic funk and pop has gotten me all excited for all the upcoming road trips and days at the beach. A song that would get my body moving and my mood improving.

Album: Batten Down the Hatches by Hickory

0

During my listens of this latest album by Hickory I often found myself confused and in question of what’s going to happen next. On a couple of occasions I found myself questioning their quirky choices and their eccentric shifts, only to be fully in agreement just a few bars later.

Hickory is a duo based in San Francisco and New York and composed of Gabriel Stern and Peter Mark Kendall, both singing and sharing guitar, synth, and piano duties. Calling Hickory an electronica duo would be a massive understatement. Even as the greater majority of the music they make is entirely synth and production based, there still lives a heart of sophisticated and meticulously crafted textures and passages that utilize all sorts of intelligent sampling, sound design, and pure musicality. Maybe electronica, but heightened.

Batten Down the Hatches is the title of their latest album release. A healthy batch of 12 pieces of music that encourages exploration and rewards patience. From the record’s first passages, the introduction of ‘Adrift’, the duo makes it clear that this album is not your average walk in the park. The entirety of ‘Adrift’ as a matter of fact is dense and challenging. The song’s experimental rave beats almost never relent, interspersed by serene processed vocal bits here and there, before settling into yet another rave. The last segment of the song has a very memorable progression that yields into lush strings as the song ends. The Bonobo-esque beats of ‘Sliding Back’, featuring bonobo-esque chopped instrumental pieces, and bonobo-esque production design all make for a listen that’s more accessible than ‘Adrift’ especially as the blaring, processed horns arrive. The piece then gets fragmented into an experimental bit that descends into a serene, soulful outro, as the horns and piano become sensual and human, relinquishing their electronic guise. ‘All the Time’ sounds like something Thom Yorke would come up with. With its decisive progressions, haunting vocals, and healthy dose of dissonance. The exploded guitar parts are bold and brash, and the acoustic drums that get introduced somewhere in the song’s second half are tastefully played. An intimidating stunner.

Even on the album’s shortest piece ‘Minuet for Tomorrow’, the duo finds a way to make the rich, classically-inspired intro morph into a bit of sensual, electronic soul. ‘A Man’ is a cut that celebrates dissonance from its opening piano line and eerie vocal lines. Never getting easier or more approachable, the piece jumps from the serene and ambient, to the hectic and groovy, then back again, while remaining ripe with delicious and inviting dissonance throughout. After Hickory’s ‘Fitter Happier 2.0’, titled ‘Upped My Dose of Seroquel’, the album’s scariest cut graces our ears. ‘Hold Me Down’ is dense and chock-full of layers. From its cyclic opening part, utilizing a processed vocal melody and a driving groove, on top of a web of intertwining, buzzing synths, creating a cacophony of sound that suddenly implodes into a heavy, battering rhythm, as the vocals somehow get more foreboding. A sequence in the middle with a relatively conventional piano was actively scary, as it built up anticipation on what’s to come next.

Following is the relatively conventional ‘On the Low’. When I say relatively, I mean like 18% conventional. The processed trap beats and vocals ramp up until they seamlessly blend into a soulful section with warm piano sounds and the stunning vocals of Whitney White in the album’s most accessible and beautiful passage. ‘Alone’ is the last of the album’s highlights. This tasteful piece incorporates a driving, overdriven electric bass part, percussive and huge, on top of whirring synths, to create a sense of homecoming via the song’s engulfing and calm composition. Short and touching. Call me a conformist, but ‘Alone’ was the cut that managed to stir me most easily.

Having played together and made music since 2004, and being inspired by the likes of James Blake and Radiohead, it comes as no surprise that Hickory have more than enough experience and sense to craft memorable and detrimental music. Expressive at all times, and divisive at most, ‘Batten Down the Hatches’ is an album of fulfilling music, featuring sections that will take a moment to forget. A treat for the lovers of experimental electronica, and to those who appreciate listening to songs that implore them to peel away the layers.

On My Own by Moody Mac

0

It’s very easy getting lost while listening to Moody Mac’s latest release. As vocal textures blend, outlandish and hypnotizing, it gets more challenging to piece the song together as it progresses. Until one point, when everything clicks, and the song develops into something quite unusual.

An artist and songwriter that hails from Munich, Moody Mac is a hip hop fanatic who has in time veered away from hip hop in order to explore different vibes and genres that could help him better express himself, as making music for Mac ism a form of pure expression. ‘On My Own’, the title of Moody Mac’s latest single, can probably be safely categorized as a fusion of ambience and hip hop.

It is clearly experimental with its snazzy trap beats, sparse and almost entirely driven by the figures on the hihats. The vocals are then divided between two distinct lines. A semi-conventional, laid back melody, more spoken than sung in how relaxed they are, and a line of twisted and processed lines that seem to carry the larger lyrical heft of the song. Guttural and deep, and clinically clean, the alien nature of that vocal line creates an unusual atmosphere that’s intoxicating and inviting.

‘On My Own’ displays Moody Mac in his most expressive of forms. Creating something that’s musically left-field and unheard of using elements that can be counted on one hand. There can be no denying that ‘On My Own’ is divisive, but then there can also be no denying the gravitational pull of this song’s alien sparsity.

Found My Way Here by Rachel Davie Lee

0

Virgin Islands based artist Rachel Davie Lee released her latest single “Found My Way Here”, it was recorded for a new compilation release titled ‘Connexion’ by French label Noussanseux in March 2023.

“Found My Way Here” is a story about reconciliation between Rachel’s past and present and the struggles she went through to reach her way to being one with herself.

Rachel soars on vocals while Brent Hoyte builds the musical world through his piano playing…”Found My Way Here” is a vocals and piano only track that manages to create a bigger world than the sum of its parts…

Usually, when a vocals plus one instrument song is playing, lot of times it feels empty, or at best missing some mojo…not the case here with Rachel and Brent, where they have their sound lush and complete with all the mojo you’d want when experiencing a triple A quality title like “Found My Way Here”.

Rachel says that “Found My Way Here” is all about accepting that this is where you are supposed to be, no matter how many regrets or what ifs you’ve struggled with on the journey…we are always meant to be somewhere, and this somewhere is where we can find peace, maybe after a little bit of struggling, who doesn’t go through that?

That’s why the lyrical side of “Found My Way Here” is relatable…it’s something we can almost surely all agree to go through…

Rachel, we thank you for this journey, it’s a lesson we can all learn from.

Wishing you all the best in life…you deserve it.

Cheers!

Hello Wonder by Neoradiant

Neoradiant & Francesca Hojda’s first collaboration resulted in the latest release “Hello Wonder”…a euphoric spacey dance song that can put you in a glowing mood and maybe make your day a bit better…

Neoradiant is a Romanian artist based in the city of Timișoara in the western part of Romania.

Neoradiant is actually a new musical project by Romanian producer Daniel Dorobanțu, a Romanian artist who worked with many branches of art, visual, dance and music included…and this time around he collaborated with the singer and the voice of his latest track “Hello Wonder”.

“Hello Wonder” is a journey of discovery and not just a song…

The spacey musical clouds of melodies and beats are filled with Hojda’s angelic and mesmerizing vocals…

Hodja adds so much to the experience of the track, she’s like our guide through this journey and Daniel’s music is the ship we’re on.

The percussive elements and electronic drums are a driving force and the engine for the ship that we’re on to embark on this adventure…while the pads and soundbeds are like the clouds we float on to go forward…the melodic synth arpeggios are the stars that pass by so fast…and the iconic melodic saxophone is like the star we follow in that vast space, it’s our destination…

There are also many sonic elements that add to the whole experience like the slide guitar and the synth elements…everything fuses together and gels perfectly to give us an unforgettable journey…a journey as Daniel explains “a journey of discovery and wonder”.

We highly recommend this journey to any music lover, especially the people who like spacey synth wave pop…you’ll find yourself at home.

Neoradiant, Francesca, we wish you all the best, we hope to hear more from the both of you collaborating once again…and we can’t wait to see what you have next Neoradiant for the fans.

Cheers!
