Ocean / Wastebag by StarAV

StarAV releases a new genre-bending song to take us on a journey through dreams and life…

“ocean / wastebag” is the song released by the collaboration between StarAV as the vocalist/songwriter and Faithloss being the producer.

Both artists are from Australia and met in the online SoundCloud hyperpop community…they always felt like having a unique and distinct style that perhaps didn’t fit individually, but together, collaboration has brought them a long way, producing solid, artistic and commercial hits.

Their latest “ocean / wastebag” has many genres under its ambient coating…

You have a bit of rock, hip-hop, indie and folk elements…

…it starts with the ambient elements, reverberated vocals, and oceanbeds of pads…

…then the hip-hop and percussive elements jump in…the beats drive the track and add so much to the overall experience.

The ambient elements fill the air and the soul…

…it adds a lot also of storytelling elements…and “ocean / wastebag” is like reading a short story…

The story talks about finding a place in the world and making connections…sometimes it works, other times…it doesn’t…and that’s really life…

Dynamically, how this song came to be was Faithloss creating instrumentals and sending them over to StarAV to write lyrics and melodies for them…they truly leveraged technology to do some unique art here.

…the song actually also has a surprise second half…it kind of fades into an ethereal version of itself…taking us from the bottom of the ocean and into the vast space…with different drum beats and percussive elements and a different instrumentation giving us a completely different experience…

It’s like 2 songs put together…and they were originally like this…but this is how the artists are also discussing the dichotomy between ambition and the inability to connect to the present.

We can’t wait to experience the next story of this collaboration between these two surreal artists.

Wishing them all the best in life…

Cheers!

Hang On (A Song for Michael) Song Review by Leo Solal

0

With an organic flow that’s loaded with emotions, the Paris-based artist Leo Solal dropped his latest single Hang On (A Song for Michael) on the 23rd of May 2023. Tackling themes of absence and long-distance friendships with his acoustic approach, Solal developed a tune that’ll go straight to your “On Repeat” playlist. Let me tell you more about it.

Hang On (A Song for Michael) opens with some dreamy floating melodies and warm vocals by Leo Solal, softly inviting us to his world and promising a chill tune with subtle melancholic vibes. Solal‘s soothing arpeggios go perfectly with his mellow vocals, and adding those vocal harmonies as well gave it an emotional depth and cozy sing-along vibes that I believe would create a bonding moment with the fans when played live. I loved that smooth dynamic twist Solal did around the 2:15 minute mark, it instantly took Hang On (A Song for Michael) sound to the next level with that simple groove and bittersweet streaming vibes, drew a smile on my face, and truly filled me with emotions.

Hang On (A Song for Michael) shows Leo Solal‘s beautiful, fluid writing style and his good sense of melody and direction. He managed to create such a heart-hitting piece that deeply connects with the listener through carefully written and arranged melodies, that perfectly hit home with no overdoing or flexing. Will definitely be looking forward to more from Leo Solal, keep on rocking. Cheers!

Wonderland by Liv Crash

The latest song from Italian rock singer-songwriter Liv Crash is entitled “Wonderland” and is one of those songs that magically bridge the gap between nostalgic and modern rock styles. The song has Liv playing lead guitar and vocals and the lyrics were written by him as well.

The track begins with some blues-y rimshots and a funky clean guitar tone that starts and stops perfectly with the drum beats. Liv’s brightly-toned playful vocals begin telling the story of how he “wants to go to wonderland” in an attitude and style that are so nostalgic to the 70s and 80s- an element that beautifully contrasts the modern and polished production the track has.

Moreover, there are backing female vocals that feel inspired by RnB/Soul and make the lyrics feel like they came out of a movie soundtrack or theater play…it’s got so much comic relief that you will actually visualize the lyrics as you listen to them. Another great element that made the song the way it is is Liv’s clear pronunciation and the way he emphasizes certain words and sings/speaks others softly, he’s a true master of his craft.

The song has a nice guitar solo that’s pretty lengthy and is followed by a section that goes harder and a bit heavier than those before it, the vocals will truly reach their full extent when you listen to that part. Overall, this is a song that I recommend to pretty much any fan of Rock, Blues, or Funk because of its amazing vocals and how it has no trouble making ends meet.

Iluminado by Horizonte Lied

The Horizonte Lied cut we have at hand today is a remastered take on one of their best-known hits, ‘Iluminado’, updated and remixed for a spot on the band’s ambitious project ‘Final Remasters’, which is a collection of remasters of the band’s more standout track in their long and illustrious history.

The Mexican band Horizonte Lied, based in Monterrey, can trace their earliest roots all the way back to 1992, during the high school years of its three members, the band started with covers of Depeche Mode and a few originals, but started getting serious around 2001. Composed of friends Alex Ezert, Bernardo Garza, and Jesus Logar, the band’s members have been lifelong friends and they do exchange roles within the band, with the three taking some hand in the keyboards department. But primarily, Ezert is their producer, Garza is their Percussionist, and Logar carries the lead vocals.

Iluminado’s remaster is punchy and roomy. With boomy, charismatic vocals, a driving, reverb-laden beat, and a litany of writhing synths. The stabby and varied synth sounds, mostly rhythmic, play very off of the consistent beats, soaked in reverb, and the deep vocals, featuring a minimal, punk-inspired delivery that evokes a bit of Joy Division, if Joy Division did industrial synth-tronica in Spanish. The remaster sounds neat and the layers of steely synths and vocals can all be pulled apart with ease and all the delicious detail of the arrangement gawked at, which is an entertaining exercise.

‘Iluminado’ is a hard-hitting tune from a band of hardened, electronica veterans. The remaster is a faithful representation of the beloved original that brings it to a modern standard of production that fans will find fresh and inviting.</span

Famous by LIBERATI

Fusions of deep, scathing social commentary with upbeat, cheerful bop-friendly music will remain one of the more endearing and stirring musical formulas. Because what can be better than getting partygoers to dance to a song that is apprehensive of a big chunk of their lifestyles? We’ll tell you… it’s making that song absolutely terrific.

Malibu-based singer and songwriter LIBERATI knows a thing or two about going viral. After amassing more than 12 million views on the infamous TikTok channel The Powerhouse, LIBERATI now knows the formula to make a successful summer hit, and he knows how to get it heard too.

‘Famous’ is the title of LIBERATI’s latest single and it is what you would describe, if you had to describe a hit for the early summer. Starting with the song’s terrific production. The sound is fresh and punchy, neat and EQed to perfection. From the snappy, tight drums, and LIBERATI’s fresh and jumpy vocal performance, which is a showcase for his strong singing qualities, to the litany of sweet detailings in the synths and soundscapes. The song also boasts of a terrific saxophone solo that’s honestly way too underrated in the realms of delicious, summer hits.

If you fancy an early taste of summer, something to dance to while the lyrics criticize our constant pursuit of empty fame through our obsession with the superficiality of social media, which LIBERATI manages to make sound good and juicy, then Famous is where you should go.

Roll Over by Avi Kytes

We could easily hear the Catalan strain in this debut single from Avi Kytes, with its mature fusion of dream pop, soul, RnB, and tasty production details, altogether making for one of the year’s absolute best debuts.

London based, Avi Kytes is the brainchild of singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Alex Rigueiro, originally from Barcelona. At its core, ‘Roll Over’ is a sensual love story, a theme that’s richly explored instrumentally, but also, ‘Roll Over’ is a song that revolves around the uneasiness and fear that lives at the earlier stages of relationships. The words are sweet and alluring, Rigueiro’s effortless deliveries making them even more so. The song’s simplistic composition is a continuation of a theme of minimalistic sensuality that goes throughout the song. The surface is calm and composed, but the heart of the song is on fire.

The song’s passion comes through the choice of percussion sounds, the snaky, writhing sub bass, and the chorused, hot rhythm guitars that play restrained lines, but with their distinctive tone, the effect is immediate and fulfilling. But immediacy doesn’t get more so than with the scorching brass arrangement that hits in the sensational post-chorus. Surprising, at once gut-wrenching and elating, and a quite colorful addition that acts as that one final element that elevates the song from great to utterly sublime.

Roll Over is the beginning of a series of singles that will dot 2023 from Avi Kytes, in support of his upcoming EP ‘Sour Kisses’, and we are already hooked. More singles of the same quality and richness, and we might have one of the year’s best EPs. We are already breaking records with one of the year’s best debuts… why stop there?

what’s it to you? by mase J

Mase J returns with one more of his heartfelt, well-crafted gems of effortless, contemporary hiphop that ooze with character and meaning.

Based in London, mase J is a singer and songwriter with a brand of soothing and laid-back indie hip hop. On his latest release, a single titled ‘what’s it to you’, mase J is ruminating over people coming back into his life. With a meaningful set of bars that mase J so easily lays down, the singer sets a comfortable, conversational mood with his relaxed flow and talk-like register. The song explores the halos that artists seem to incline towards building for themselves, and how difficult this makes it for other people to enter these halos, especially if the person inside the halo isn’t pure.

Meaningful words and immersive singing are only half of the story because the backing music manages to make everything easier to get lost in. With a chill electric rhythm guitar that plays funk-inspired chord hits, the trap beats keep a minimal groove going where ad libs and spacey backing vocals fill up the empty gaps quite nicely.

‘what’s it to you’ is nice. Nice words, nice music, and just a nice delivery of all elements. ‘Nice’ might be a bit of a basic term, but brought down to its core meaning, it’s an adjective that would be considered big praise for a piece of art, and we mean it entirely in this vein… we are heavily praising this track.

Every Winding Mile by Dawn Boudreau

All the way from Vancouver, Canada, Dawn Bordreau releases a new indie folk single titled “Every Winding Mile”…the title tells a story, so does the music…and it’s an emotional journey.

The song was written as a love song for the trip between two destinations…Prince George and Vancouver…and at either ends of this journey, there are loved ones waiting for the songwriter…

Such a lovely and emotional premise, having loved ones at both points of your journey…if you go this way, or the other, you’ll be greeted and welcomed warmly…there’s no wrong way to go, there’s always love at the end of your journey.

Dawn Bordeau does almost everything on this record. Dawn composed the music, wrote the lyrics, played the piano, sang and co-produced the song with David Ramos…a true multipotentialite, rooted in many perspectives of the artistically sonic world.

“Every Winding Mile”’s story is a very nostalgic one for the writer…even though through the years this road has changed a bit, due to floods and fires…but the journey is still the same, the same heartwarming journey, the same love waiting at the end of it all.

Dawn created a touching song with strong indie folk essence floating in the air…the music is catchy and emotional and has the feeling of the journey captured perfectly…

The song has the piano taking center stage, with super catchy hooks and melodies…but the spices add so much to the mix, the percussive elements by Kate MacColl are perfectly balanced…the upright bass carrying the music by Derek Maroney is fulfilling…the amazing angelic harp by Emily Von Hausen, the folky melodic Accordion by Alison Jenkins, the emotional nostalgic violin by Katie Stewart…everything is wrapped in the masterful mixing by David Ramos, Pandemonia Music and the mastering by Brock McFarlane, CPS Mastering

We enjoyed being part of this trip that was masterfully crafted by Dawn Boudreau…we felt like we were there, tagging along and experiencing the love.

Dawn, we wish you all the best in life, you deserve it…and a little more.

Can’t wait to hear what kind of journey you’ll take us on next time.

Cheers!

Be Yourself Tonight by MARQelectronica

From the UK, shines a star in the world of electronica…

MARQelectronica with the latest single “Be Yourself Tonight” is coming in hot with a banging electronic song that has tons of character and a lot of melodic moments to make the ride even more enjoyable.

MARQelectronica is Mark Dickinson from Newcastle upon Tyne…and he’s bringing it through his electronic music.

“Be Yourself Tonight” is an upbeat, smooth and chill track worthy of an Ibiza performance…I’m picturing it as an anthemic performance with a laid back performance and light show…the song is one of the most melodic electronic songs I’ve heard in a long time, it’s focusing on melodies, vocal performances and musical nuances…and in the end, everything shows in the output…the output is absolutely brilliant.

Something interesting I felt when I was listening to the song on repeat…sometimes it makes me chill…other times it made me move…so I believe that “Be Yourself Tonight” can have different effects on listeners…this is one of the more interesting parts of the songs effects…and I love this duality.

The deep house bass lines and drum beats are awesome…

The melodic instrumentation and melodic vocal lines, both male and female are amazing…

The change of dynamics along the track is phenomenal and balances the energy from start to end, giving you an ever changing experience that keeps on evolving throughout the songs’s runtime…

“Be Yourself Tonight” sounds perfect, It was mixed and mastered by the Brit and Ivor Novello winning Simon Ellis.

MARQelectronica is doing a banging job on delivering high quality electro-melodic songs…yes, I made that word up…and he’s sharing this energy with the whole world and I think his music needs to be performed in bigger and bolder places. He’s simply very very good.

Mark, we wish you all the best in life, keep’em coming, can’t wait to see what you come up with next.

Cheers!
