Death Trap by Joshua Ketchmark

0

When musicians try to share an encouraging message of moving forward and not giving up, they usually do so with a vibrant sound and an ardent performance to energize the listeners. Joshua Ketchmark doesn’t go this route. In his single, “Death Trap,” he takes a soulful approach that makes the listener feel as if a friend is giving them sincere advice based on his own personal experiences.

“Death Trap” is one of the singles from the tenth studio album, ‘BLOOD,” by the Nashville-based artist Joshua Ketchmark. It was written by the sentimental musician himself and is inspired by his upbringing in the Midwest, two and a half hours south of Chicago, IL.

The song starts off with mellow guitar chords that are soon joined by Ketchmark’s melodic vocals with their heartfelt storytelling and tender yet hoarse timbre. The almost five-minute tune has a minimalist production; nevertheless, it’s more than enough to build an ethereal atmosphere.

The touching lyrical content urges one to paint a picture of their own, including both the melancholic parts and where they saw the light at the end of the tunnel. It feels like the vocals are your inner voice telling you:

“So give all you got.

Try and take me apart.

Never know when to stop.

But you can only push me so far.”

I wouldn’t think for a second that a song titled “Death Trap” would be this lighthearted and soul-charging. But again, Joshua Ketchmark doesn’t go for what’s ordinary, whether it’s a title, a performance, or harmonies. He’s an exceptional artist, indeed!

Prologue by Blending Borders

0

The newest offering from Blending Borders is the beginning of a 13-chapter epic tale that composes the length of their latest full-length album, titled Deceiving Dreams Part 1.

Blending Borders is an Austrian Prog/Post Rock band based in Neustadt, and their album is an intriguing tale of a two-class society living on an island, with only a chosen few selected to enter the dazzling, bright city. A concept that feels, eerily enough, both dystopian and fantastic, yet closer to reality than it ever was before. The starting chapter, the Prologue, is a short anthem. This cinematic stunner is based on a gorgeous, grandiose piano arrangement, with haunting chords and orchestral motion. The beginning is an inquisitive yet dark chord progression and Oliver Pichler’s prominent delivery, as he introduces himself as the narrator of the story.

The instrumentation soon blooms into a lush orchestral suite with airy strings, and rich, elegant woodwinds, which lend an unmistakable air of fantasy and mystery to the sound. The production, courtesy of Wolf Sebastian, is masterful and fully professional. I have no idea if an actual orchestra was used to record these sounds or if they were computer generated, and this lack of conviction should be a sufficient indicator of the quality of every aspect of the sound.

Deceiving Dreams Part 1 will be released one song at a time, every Friday, starting November 4th, and like a TV fantasy series, I can see myself tuning in once a week to find out more about this perfectly intriguing tale.

Flow (Radio Edit) by Dee & d’Z

0

Austrian singer/songwriter Bernadette Dengler and Dutch drummer/ composer/ producer Hans-Peter formed a duo in the covid shutdown in 2020 Dee & d’Z and came up with a jazz single “Flow” that was released on 09/09/22.

The song starts out with a jazz trio of piano, drums, and bass which gives the jazzy vibe as the song starts. Dee comes in with her warm expressive voice singing about “going with the flow” as soon she says “it takes you to where you should be” the groove is instantly changed, and backing vocals are introduced which gives the song a sense of liveness and continuity. As the song goes back to the intro groove the brass section is introduced giving the section a whole new dimension assisted by dee backing vocals keeping the listener interested and wanting more. Again, the words “you are exactly where you are meant to be” are the key for the song to take the energized groove with the brass fueling it. A beautiful guitar solo is played as we reach the end of the song transitioning into the outro that has an interesting take on it by fading the music out while leaving the vocals and piano in your ears as she says “just let it flow” it’s a very impactful ending. The correlation between the music and the lyrics makes the song a continuing piece of art.

Love Not Hate by Olly Hite

0

“We have been surrounded by division for far too long. From Brexit to Covid and now war” said Olly Hite, a British singer/songwriter born in Brighton. This inspired him to come up with a peace and love anthem “love not hate”, which is set to be released on 11/11/22.

The song tackles the greed of the world and how hate takes over everything leading to conflicts, whether it’s war or others. The song starts with a smooth vibe with coloration between the piano, drums, and vocals tackling the greed and wrongs of the world. The drums stop then a delightful piano line comes in with the words “Love not hate” setting the scene of the song. The reprise of the song hits hard when the cello is introduced painting the full picture, especially with lines such as “Yes ignorance is bliss that gives you comfort” and “can you hear the children crying”, the latter is flavored with a beautiful harmony that makes it more powerful. The song is catchy and addictive, as a person who was born and lived in the Middle Eastern region I can relate to it. I hope that the power of the song can spread love.

Album: Integrals by The Laconic

0

The Laconic’s music felt very close to my heart, mostly because it’s a formula I’ve personally dabbled with for a long while, without much success. Instrumental music is insanely challenging to pull off. Even the markets of illustrious post-rock and progressive music have been slowly moving to the side or at least changing their skins entirely to cope with a more diverse set of demands from the listeners. Gone (almost) are the days of 10-minute guitar solos, or sprawling post-rock anthems that stretch as far as the eyes can see, now is the time for instant gratification, and short-lived euphoria, which makes The Laconic’s release even more insanely challenging.

The Chicago-based late bloomer Mark Pelath is the sole man responsible for The Laconic’s music. A musician, a data scientist, and a builder of his own guitars and synths, Integrals is his debut album. Integrals aren’t prog or post-rock. It doesn’t have philosophical musings. It doesn’t have iconic guitar solos. It doesn’t have grandiose atmospheres drenched in dramatic reverbs. What Integrals attempt to do is in fact, even more challenging. An album of “instrumental songs”. Those pieces, Mark says, have melodies and harmonies, just like songs do, just no lyrics, and no great technical fireworks, because, in his own words, he’s not that technical.

Integral is 8 songs long. a common thread that binds them all together and is an amazing, pristine production. A cohesive sense of industrial music permeates the atmosphere through the overdriven, punchy basslines, the steady consistent drumbeats, and the antiseptic, sharp conciseness of the synth leads. There’s much more thrown into the mix that unfortunately falls flat. The melodies require a squint to figure out, mostly built on simple pentatonic up-and-down climbs. While some sound snaky, intricate, and interesting, others are overly simplistic, and simply don’t serve the underlying harmonies. There’s something to say about the interplay between layers of synths and bass, like on Anthem and DBS. Integral has a beautiful vibe, with a booming bass and an expansive drum sound. The 9/8 time signature is executed brilliantly and the interplay between all the instrumental layers was seriously inviting. Sietch is a glitchy, scratchy number with uber-harsh-sounding synths and a properly industrial drum sound. Stiff, and drenched in reverb. Tensor is dancy and intricate, bordering on funk, but with confusing, writhing leads, it lands somewhere far away. The atmospheres of Tensors with intoxicating and hypnotic.

Strong For You by Karen Harding

0

The prolific Australian-based artist, Karen Harding, is still going for sincerity when making her music and touching hearts with her angelic voice that delivers relatable, tense experiences through its silky lines. Her fresh single “Strong For You” is a warm taste of soulful soliloquy that sounds as melancholic as each inner crisis, yet finds its way into a hopeful scenario.

There’s nothing more humane than being dipped in darkness and then crawling out to the light through a painful process of growth. It’s necessary to go through hell to know what heaven tastes like. If there’s anyone that can portray this journey, it’s the sensational singer/songwriter, Karen Harding, and she perfectly did that in her latest single, “Strong For You.”

A soft intro opens “Strong For You,” paving the way for Karen to stir the deepest blue sensations that have been gnawing at one’s core for a while. The song may remind you of someone close to you who is going through a difficult time, and you want to be there for them, or this someone could be you.

“It’s a song of healing,” said the inspiring musician, and I totally agree. I believe that every human comes to a point in their life when they need to stand still, explore themselves, accept them, and love them in order to be able to move forward again. The gloomy tone of the ethereal vocals captures the down feeling of such a phase before shifting to an optimistic take on hope.

P&M Records in Argentina produced the single, and while Karen’s vocals stand out, the gentle, heartwarming piano notes and mellow guitar layer add more warmth to their peaceful melody. As it progresses, straightforward drumming joins in to interact with the passionate chorus. It’s the best listening experience when intense emotions meet smooth execution.

Karen Harding sees music as a soul conversation; she translates her raw sensations into heartfelt music and makes others feel heard and understood. “Strong For You” below will be your solace while you have a needed conversation with your soul.

It’s Getting Near Christmas by Mick J. Clark

2

I was wondering recently if we could speed up the arrival of Christmas. We could use some enchantment in the air. And at about the right time, Mick J. Clark’s “It’s Getting Near Christmas” hit me like snowflakes during a dry spell.

Mick J. Clark has been in the music scene for more than a decade, juggling genres like a pro and producing multi-flavored music that shows his rich musicianship. His single, “It’s Getting Near Christmas,” was originally released in 2012, yet it sounds like it has been freshly baked in the oven. This futuristic sonic charm is not a Christmas miracle; it’s just that this splendid artist is that good!

“It’s Getting Near Christmas” is fully charged with the colorful spirit of the jolly season. It’s pretty much the same as every Christmas carol, where the rhythm merrily bounces and paints the atmosphere with intense euphoria. However, Mick J. Clark’s vocals are what make you choose this particular holiday song to vibe with. He has a warm, melodic vocal line that makes you want to cuddle up with your family, drink hot cocoa, and wish to freeze this precious moment forever.

I’m sure the glitzy lyrical content, vibrant instrumentation, and velvety vocals will make you want to go find your Christmas decorations and light them all up like this song ignited your heart and soul.

Dance On Your Own by DJ Industrial Badger

0

Artist DJ industrial badger released a banging electronic pop song called ‘Dance on your own”, on the 2nd of October, from Columbus, US. The song belongs to the Band TKB, which are 5 young men from the ages 12-23. Their influences include Justin Beiber, Shawn Mendes, and Bruno Mars.

The song is all about reminding you that even if you get turned down or rejected, there is fun and joy when you dance on your own. The overall sound of the song is vibrant and upbeat with an undertone of undetectable sexiness that’s coming from the beat of the song.

The soundscape is totally danced with a groovy tune, with a medium-paced rhythm. It’s a clubby song that requires you to put on your best outfit and vibe to the song. The musical arrangement is packed with hard-hitting drum sets and prominent cymbals that set the pace and tone of the beat, one string guitar playing sound effect, a beautiful electric guitar that swooshes in, and a subtle bass that creates the melody in addition to the oohing sound effects. The vocals are smooth and sexy with a lot of fun sound effects to add richer tunes to the song. It’s definitely a good vibes song!

A Better Future by Major Kami

0

Artist Major Kami released a striking musical alternative to David Bowies ‘A better future, on the 28th of October from Bordeaux, France. The original song is of rock origin and Kami used an electro-pop vision for a new sound that is definitely captivating. This song is part of an 11-track album dedicated to the late star.

The song speaks of an imagined future, where there is more light than dark, more positivity than despair. The overall sound of the song is mesmerizing and puts you in a state of an ecstatic trance. The electronic element in the song really adds to the quirky and spacey vibe of Bowie’s. The soundscape is a magical and unearthly panel. The musical arrangement is complex, starting with a very fast piano made up of 2 notes that is very catchy, and moves on to intense high and low drums.

There are also funeral sound effects that take the music to a strange realm that isn’t earth along with beautiful spacey sounds that echo emotional intensity. There are also dreamy backing vocals of the vocalist’s voice which is angelic and ghostly at the same time, and a male robotic sound that feels like it’s coming from far away. We honestly can’t stop replaying this one!

Album: Bloodsky by Hangtime

0

From the United States, Socorro a group called Hangtime released their latest dark wave album Bloodsky on 31/10/22.

The album is purely experimental with no boundaries blending psychedelic, Edm, Nu metal, and ambient. The album starts with “Insert a coin” an ambient song with a hint of an arcade-like sound the correlating relation between the title and the track immediately puts the listener in a state of mind of exploring and excitement like a kid who is about to try an arcade game for the first time.

Followed by “Someone else” which is an out-of-your-body experience sprinkled with an industrial vibe the sound design in this track really gives the listener a third-person experience from the rotating synth and the distant vocals. ”Planet party” immediately gives a Linkin park vibe with industrial elements making it an interesting mix of nostalgia and originality and is the first hint of Nu metal in the album that’s present in tracks like “the wolf”, “Unholye”, “My story”, and “Bird Box”. While “peter” is a psychedelic Edm that can be best described as a peter pan acid trip, tracks such as “My story” and “Börek” are synth-wave-based songs.

The closing track of the album is “Milky Ways” an ambient synth track starting with a reverse effect building slowly over time with various instruments added, reaching its full image near the end of the track with beautiful Rhodes melodies, industrial beat, and melodic vocals. The album is a whole journey that takes the listener from one place to another. There are a lot of hidden gems in between that cannot be discovered from one listen but can definitely grab the listener’s attention. To fully comprehend the creativity of the album it’s advised to listen to it more than once.
