Album: Ukubonga [Gratitude] by Lorraine Klaasen & Mongezi Ntaka

0

From the white heart of Toronto, Canada, we have a collection of 13 precious folk gyms from the rich and obscure catalog of south African folk music, known as Township Music. An anthology of culture, compassion, dedication, and artistry that has a duo of beautiful human beings to thank. Lorraine Klaasen is the diva whose voice assumes total command on all the songs wonderfully recreated for this album, and her musical partner, the amazing guitarist Mongezi Ntaka whose arrangements and performances resonate and massively help in delivering these songs in a way that perfectly preserves their character and color, and simultaneously makes them accessible, approachable, and suitable for a casual day’s listening.

The intention behind this release is a remarkable one. Both musicians are South African by heritage and have been professional musicians for a while, it was about time they embarked on this journey of bringing their homeland’s folk masterpieces more into the public perception, a body of work that’s as rich and as noble as it is underappreciated. Township music comes to us courtesy of eminent artistic souls who’ve lived through some of humanity’s darkest and least honorable hours, the South African apartheid. For such a time packed with humiliation and sorrow for almost all South African people of color, you will hear a collection of sounds entirely dominated by joy, positivity, and boundless hope, which speak volumes of the endless reserve these people have shown.

It’s difficult to find things to say about these classics. They have readily stood the test of time and the test of character. They speak of an era of massive injustice, and they do it with radiance and panache that’s truly memorable, and for that, it seemed inappropriate that I should wear my “critic’s hat” as I listened to any piece of music from this collection. Instead, I found my focus going on the performances, the voice, and the arrangements… the delivery of classic Folk is always what makes or breaks it. On those fronts, I was faced with an album of stark honesty, simplicity, and directness. All the songs are recorded in a single take, with Klaasen’s passionate and culturally appropriate inflictions and ornamentations, along with Ntaka’s simple, warm, and resonant acoustic guitar. Overdubs were later added as needed. A massive number of instruments see their way onto these compositions, ranging from rhythmic shakers, congas, and bongos which play organic Afrobeats, all the way to ethnic flutes, fiddles, and choir vocals. With no exception, all instruments are played compassionately and are mixed in gorgeously, resulting in not a single line ever feeling like it breaks a pace or causes any kind of disruption. I can safely say that this album’s production is totally professional.

All songs are incredibly powerful, sweet, and colorful. Again, without exception, I found this entire album flowing into my ears like pure honey, and if I had to point my fingers to a highlight or two, I’d have to go to Unamanga and Sekusile, two incredibly sweet and catchy tunes that are guaranteed to put a wide grin on any face.

All these songs buzz with life. Music for weddings, childbirths, and celebrations of life, born out of times of extreme oppression and cruelty. It’s music that’s human and touching, and it’s been given a makeover that made it as gorgeous as ever, with performances that are at once heartfelt and entirely able and in command. Every sentence and every strum are delivered soulfully in this collection of gems from the heart of apartheid via Toronto. And it’s an essential listen that delves deeply into a rich musical tradition that’s sadly overlooked.

Christmas Time Again by Anthony Benjamin

0

It’s getting a little colder, the magic of winter festivities is starting to sparkle, and artist Anthony Benjamin ignites some colorful fairy lights to decorate our hearts with, as he blesses us with his new pop, holiday season song, ‘Christmas time again’, on the 11th of November. Based in London, UK, Benjamin creates music to escape today’s crazy world. His genres of interest include pop, synth pop, and electronic music, and started his musical journey in early 2020.

Tasting like sugar cookies and brilliant gift rappers under your Christmas tree, this song is a seasonal classic. We can never get bored of Christmas carols and chants! So naturally, this song recounts the memory of Christmas and its jolly magic, and benjamin hopes that through this song the joy of Christmas time is rekindled. The overall sound of the song is bright and cheerful, with a slow rhythm and a perfect mix of Christmas sounds and soft, clear vocals that uplift your spirits. Light and frothy, the musical arrangement is packed with, drums, delightful piano, xylophone sound effects at the back of the song, playful sleigh bells reminding us of Santa’s arrival soon, and a fast and glorious violin. We also witness a beautiful piano solo that really feels like it must be Christmas already! Grab your hot chocolate and run to the store or your attic as you find your way through Christmas decorations for this year with this song in the background.

Lungs by Larwood and Koh

0

Hip hop duo Larwood and Koh are impressive and savage with a new musical take as they drop a new release called ‘Lungs”, on the 11th of November from Kingston upon Thames, Lancashire, UK. They have shown versatility as an alternative hip-hop duo who are inspired by Us Boom rap but remain in the area of English grime beats and flow underpinning their general sound. Larwood is in charge of the lyrics and the vocals while Koh is in production. The duo was also given a chance for airplay previously on Chuck D’s show.

Carrying an important message about not giving up in the face of battles, this song has a much darker and gritty tone than the previous musical releases from the duo. The overall sound of the song is very energizing and hardcore with the beat. The musical composition is based on a slow and sonically breezy soundscape, with a gritty and heart-gripping mix of heavy 808 bass and a smooth, sexy R&B undertone at the same time. The song is a medium pace rhythm, with vocals that are so fast as the rapping is A class when it comes to Larwood.

One notable impression from the song is the sudden transition to a slower tune with a backing sound effect of a distorted electric guitar that gives the track a completely edgy sound completing a unique trait in the grime the duo has presented to us. It’s definitely a fresh grime tune!

Always Late by Reue

A marriage of psychedelia, futurism, and synth-wave in one melodic techno banger

‘Always Late’ is a melodic techno collaboration between Reue from Austin, Texas, and Medellín-based Synthemesc from Colombia, released on the 27th of October. It is the 9th song of a 27 biweekly song series that Reue is currently releasing.

Featuring hypnotic grooves, interesting rhythms, soaring leads, and pumping bass lines in one powerful and evolving mix, Always Late is always evolving, and always grabbing attention through its interestingly layered melodies and sound design elements.

Always Late feels like a car cruise in a futuristic neon city.

The loud energetic buildup —like sirens blaring as you exit the city borders— into a stripped-down beat drop feels like speeding up unconsciously on a dark road to an unknown destination.

Reue and Synthemesc have taken influence from psychedelia, cyberpunk futurism, and synth-wave in a melodic techno-banger that takes listeners on an explosive trip.

Protocol by Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L

Brooklyn-based artist Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L released a moody, contemplative, and trippy music video for his R&B single “Protocol” on the 28th of October. The music, lyrics, and visuals capture the emotional highs and lows of being drunk.

The song starts with a spacious and ambient melody that feels melancholic and zoned-out, with reverberated percussion hits that add to the sense of space, which makes the artist’s vocal performance feel all the more personal in contrast— a deliberate choice to emotionally connect with the audience, followed by drums that make you sway, a bass that resonates, and layered melodies that reverberate from far, far away: all the musical ingredients for an emotionally drunken R&B hit song.

The lyrical writing, while not clear, is clearly poetic, infusing themes of desire and self-reflection. The lyrics are explicit and daring, yet feel grounded and true to the artist. One line in particular that stood out to me is “Baby I’m high but you taking me higher.”  This line perfectly encapsulates the range of emotions that the song evokes, from love and desire to the pains of addiction.

The music video for Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L’s Protocol takes inspiration from collage and psychedelic art styles, with cool cuts and impressive editing that maintain the visual appeal throughout the entire video. Studio shots show Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L’s dedication and process, and the visual effects such as the light leaks exaggerate the drunken sensation, which is absolutely brilliant decision in art direction.

Protocol has a main theme that is repeated in the chorus: “I drink too much alcohol,” and every aspect of the song, from the lyrics, music, and video focuses on it. The result is cohesive and evocative of all the accompanying emotions from each listener’s personal experiences.

So, what personal experience did Breon S.Y.N.D.E.L’s Protocol remind you of on the first listen?

Straight on Down the Line by Anton Commissaris

0

With some country influences dipped in rock and a sprinkle of jazz, artist Anton Commissaris dropped his latest single “Straight On Down The Line” on the 21st of October, 2022. Commissaris worked his piano, and guitar magic to create a classic tune that I think would be accessible to a wide range of audiences. So let’s see how it goes.

“Straight On Down The Line” is the breezy colorful tune I think we all need. Its jazzy swaying melodies and bright arrangement will instantly take you on a mountainside high road to a sunny calm place. The groovy conversation going on between the piano and contrabass is pretty interesting, it goes in total harmony with Anton Commissaris’ subtle bluesy guitars. The dynamic structure of “Straight On Down The Line” helped solidify its cheerful mood, and create a smooth fluid stream of melodies. All are led by Anton Commissaris’ warm soothing voice with a country-influenced female harmony in the chorus.

“Straight On Down The Line” is a smooth laid-back tune with a solid structure and well-written and arranged melodies, that were carefully steered and crafted to serve its mood. Anton Commissaris’ high sense of melody and attention to detail helped this come out intact with perfect layering and mixing from all instrumentations to vocals, creating a cheerful experience that I’d totally recommend. Looking forward to more, cheers!

Love Me Like I Am ft. Jordin Sparrks by for KING + COUNTRY

0

Life can be truly obnoxious, and no amount of accomplishment or material possession can make one feel better. You start to feel down and despise yourself so much that you can’t look at yourself in a mirror. Your broken self-image only gets fixed when you see its reflection through someone else—someone who knows how to embrace your insecurities, fears, and vulnerabilities and who loves you unconditionally with all these things, not despite them. The miraculous duo, for KING + COUNTRY, knows that, believes that, and has utilized their talents to portraying it all in their mesmerizing single “Love Me Like I Am.”

This marks the first time I’ve written about a band that I encountered independently rather than through my job! I’ve been listening to their music for a while now since I learned about the duo when I listened to their song “God Only Knows,” which caught my attention when it got played by chance. I fell in love with the song right away and was astonished by how they could make quality-sounding music with introspective spiritual sensations.

For those of you who don’t know; for KING + COUNTRY is made up of the multi-Grammy Award-winning brothers Joel and Luke Smallbone. The Australia-born, Nashville-based artists make music that wins awards, but more importantly, they have the capacity to touch people’s cores and turn boorish hearts into flourishing seeds of hope.

“Love Me Like I Am” was originally released on their latest album, “What Are We Waiting For?” As for this mesmerizing version, it features the Grammy-nominated, multi-platinum singer/songwriter and actress, Jordin Sparks, and Curb | Word Entertainment recording.

Sonically, the song bursts with life and charges your soul with a pleasant feeling. The zealous instrumentation sings, with the melodic, sincere vocals depicting both wistful, shaky emotions in the verses and grateful, spirited emotions in the chorus. Having sensational male and female harmonized vocals gave the track an aesthetic, profound touch. When it comes to the rich lyrical content that has been sung soulfully, it feels like an intense prayer that conveys a frustrating reality and gently converts it into a hopeful ambiance.

If you are a believer, you’ll be immersed in the raw emotions of “Love Me Like I Am” and feel its graceful, serene energy through its vivid rhythm and passionate vocal performance. If you don’t believe in God and his limitless love for humanity, I’m not going to argue with that, but you at least believe in how loving each other could make life differ. However, if you’re lacking the warm shade of love in your life, in any form, this song might ignite the flame for you.
