Rona Mac releases her second album ‘Honeymilk & Heavy Weather’

0

After a string of singles energising buzz around the project, Rona Mac’s captivating new album Honeymilk and Heavy Weather has been unveiled, showcasing her unique creativity and unparalleled emotional depth. Four years on from her debut album Sheelah, the project is fuelled by a lifetime’s worth of personal growth and artistic development. As Rona blends alternative folk, Americana and pop, she explores friendship, grief, personal struggle and reflection, stemming from a challenging period in her life.

Rona’s DIY ethos is also on show, recorded in her caravan studio and funded through the PRS Foundation, Help Musicians, and Horizons Launchpad, the album is completely independent. Using the profits from her vinyl release to support local charities, and embarking on a tour of under-appreciated venues across the country, Rona is an artist’s artist.

Commenting on the album’s features of her friend Emily, whose friendship inspired a lot of the themes across the album, Rona adds, “Throughout the album there are scattered recordings of voice notes and spoken word pieces that she sent me over the years, varying from her sing-song happy voice, to the deep-chested voice of a woman carrying a world of pain. It was a big decision to share these with listeners, but in the context of the album as a whole it would feel incomplete without her husk in there.”

The proudly queer songwriter has held continued support but carves out her own space within the world of music.

Creatures by Okayden

0

Only a mere 2-minute-long song, but creating an everlasting effect, is “Creatures” electronic track by Australian producer Okayden. It is the lead single off of his upcoming EP, and it is inspired by the popular movie Scooby Doo.

“This song Creatures was created as I wanted something that spoke to me and my childhood,” shared Okayden. “But also something that felt very tribal-esque to create a stronger connection to people and the Earth. As the first song in my upcoming album, I am hoping to capture that essence of all the songs being connected and quite personal to me in some way, to try and break the mold a little of electronic dance music being a little faceless, a bit like how Fred Again… has implemented in his recent works.”

The song features a funky beat that has you bobbing your head to the sound, and tribal elements that consists of a language that might seem almost like gibberish upon the first listen. It is catchy, nevertheless, and is perfect for a night out clubbing or just jamming in your car on the way back home from work.

Okayden is hoping to incorporate his friends and family in future releases, but for this specific upcoming release, “Creatures”, he claims that it reminds him of the innuendos and jokes that the film Scooby Doo carried when he watched it as a young kid.

With inspiration taken from the likes of Alison Wonderland, Nnamdi, Daft Punk, and Damon Albarn, Okayden remixes a fresh sound that is fully energetic. He’s also been keeping busy this year, as he released five remixes already and was featured on 2xxFM. With such a busy schedule ahead, stay tuned for upcoming releases by the electronic mastermind!

Pulse by Rok Ali and The Addiction

0

Rok Ali and The Addiction’s sound borders on industrial metal on the title track of their latest album ‘Pulse’. A hair raising affair of monstrous riffs and clanging beats, ‘Pulse’ is a  song that creates an unforgettable atmosphere.

American rock band with a sound that can be safely put within the boundaries or rock, with leanings on Grunge, metal, and industrial, led by tantalizing frontwoman Rok Ali, Rok Ali and the Addiction’s ‘Pulse’ is a song that has been considered for a GRAMMY. The first thing that hits about ‘Pulse’ is its doom-fueled atmosphere, dominated by gargantuan distorted guitar, horrifying riffs, and sludgy, uber slow tempo.

With riffs that are foreboding enough to bring Tool to mind, and a sound that’s alternative and industrial enough to remind of Type O Negative’s flanger-filled environments, there’s no denying that ‘Pulse’ creates an immersive, unforgettable sonic atmosphere. Rok Ali’s vocal performance is as infectious as ever, with palpable confidence and a steady pace alongside the wailing riffs, thick and doom-filled bass line, and massive beats.

‘Pulse’ is an incredibly well orchestrated cut that’s easily impactful and monstrous. A terrific mix that brings the song’s abrasive nature to the forefront, ‘Pulse’ is a weighty title song to a heavy and unforgettable album, in and of itself, a rather menacing sound.

Too Close by Leo Golo

0

Leo Golo’s 4th single of his upcoming album, titled ‘Too Close’ is an extremely catchy piece of soul pop with leanings on funk, contemporary pop, and with hints of afrobeat thrown in for good measure. ‘Too Close’ is an extremely well-made piece of beautifully written pop.

Catalonian singer and songwriter Leo Golo is back with the 4th single of his debut album. After a string of different pop sounds ranging from the upbeat, to the ballad, to the synth-led, Leo Golo is experimenting with funk and soul on ‘Too Close’. Sung about undefined attraction that leads nowhere, mixed signals, and missed signs, ‘Too Close’ is flirty in its words and its music.

The mix of ‘Too Close’ is absolutely stunning. A wonderful sounding song. The playful synth leads, the funky rhythm guitar, and the general melancholy-laced darkness all help create an intoxicating and unforgettable atmosphere, just like that one felt at the start of attraction to somebody new. ANGE’s female voice feature is spot on, adding just the right amount of salt to Golo’s caramel smooth delivery.

An immediately catchy piece of songwriting, and a dizzyingly soulful duet, ‘Too Close’ is too close to being a perfect soul pop song.

A piece of music that’s incredibly hard to define, yet completely easy to get drawn into, ‘Minotaur’ is a harrowing piece of music that’s dark and challenging, yet totally addictive.

The Dungeons and Dragons inspired video would be a joy for the lovers of the legendary tabletop role playing game, with the music being a rightfully fitting soundtrack to the whimsical and fantastical nature of the themes the video and the game.

OGYGIE by MORI

0

We’ve all been there! After a breakup, long-lasting feelings and memories seem to linger, and all relationships seem to leave fragments behind. Exploring such sentiment is French producer Mori with his latest electronic release “Ogygie” which delves into the topic with a mystical theme.

“With “Ogygie”, I wanted to explore the universal themes of lost love,” shared Mori. “The passage of time, and emotional stagnation, drawing inspiration from the myth of Ulysses and the island of Ogygia.

In this myth, Ulysses is held captive on the island for years, trapped in a relationship with the nymph Calypso. He loses track of time, unable to return to his true life. This idea of an emotional trap, where one is stuck between a past that cannot be let go of and an unreachable future, is at the heart of the song.”

The mesmerizing EDM track captivates the listener from beginning to end, as Mori’s vocals perfectly reflect the track’s themes of longing. Layered instrumentation on the track allows for depth and structure, which features the collision of both electronic and organic tunes that provides “Ogygie” with a distinctive vibe.

The 21-year-old artist combines his passion for visual storytelling, compelling narratives, along with his love for music. As evident in “Ogygie”, the story behind the track is not a shallow one, and the lyrical content conveys the poetic theme perfectly. The song simply transports you to another mystical realm, where longing and yearning is captured through music in a way that tickles your senses.

“Ogygie” is that grey area between past passion and the acceptance that everything must come to an end,” concluded Mori.

LFDY by Apollo

THE PERFECT MIX BETWEEN LIFE AND REALITY!

Apollo’s latest track, LFDY (Live Fast Die Young), is a bold statement of intent, blending the urgency of youth with the weight of reality. Hailing from Texas, the artist brings his Southern charm to the forefront, crafting a narrative, drawing from his own life, that feels both raw and reflective. Apollo’s delivery is sharp, commanding attention with every verse, drawing listeners into the push and pull of the unparalleled youthful defiance.

The chorus of LFDY is the heart of the song, where Apollo repeats the mantra, “Live fast, die young, young man, fuck it.” This repetition drills in the central theme of the track: the recklessness of living in the moment while acknowledging that change, no matter how desirable, most of the time actually feels out of reach. It’s a catchy yet haunting hook that perfectly encapsulates the tension between wanting more from life and surrendering to its unpredictability.

Musically, LFDY finds the perfect balance between high-energy beats and introspective undertones. The production mirrors the song’s lyrical content, creating a sonic landscape that is both vibrant and gritty. Apollo’s ability to fuse heavy-hitting rhythms with thought-provoking storytelling showcases his artistry. He can capture both the fast-paced highs of life and the quieter, rather chaotic, moments of reflection. The track hits hard but leaves room for deeper contemplation, offering an addictive combination of sound and substance.

With LFDY, Apollo firmly positions himself as a rising voice in rap, blending realism with an unmistakable energy that resonates with a wide audience. His ability to connect personal experiences with universal themes makes this track stand out, reflecting the complexities of life in a way that is both relatable and impactful. This release is indeed one that must be on your radar!
