Barton Hartshorn unveils the intricacy of new EP ‘Everything…’

0

Growing up in the English Village of Barton Hartshorn, the artist in question started out as part of the band Dictafone, refining his talents across the three albums he made with the band before branching out as a solo artist, taking the name of his home town to honour the writers and performers that he set out to homage.

After four albums, Barton has certainly given the local folk artists their dues, spending the last decade further evolving his storytelling essence, the narratives he is able to weave becoming a core element of his success. Spending time across Australia, the USA and of course the UK, Barton’s continued ability to resonate with tastemakers and convey ineffable emotions makes him a constant light for the industry.

With his latest project, ‘Everything…’, a five-track EP filled with thoughtfulness and emotive atmospheres. Barton unveils a gracious insight into his talent, never taking a fully confident stance as he wades his way through themes of anxiety, acceptance, introspection and optimism. Whether supported by a vast array of instrumentation that glitters the soundscape and sends soaring frequencies through the headphones of the listener, or stripping back the elements to as simple as possible, a vocalist and his guitar, Barton consistently brings a sense of true, raw feeling to his performance, with some melodies feeling more like spoken poetry than infectious singalongs. The pensive attitudes are contrasted with moments of unbridled contentment, bringing the listener through his personality, the highs and lows, leaving them a little more present than before they became his audience.

Barton explains the project, “I was sitting in a packed cinema in Valencia, Spain, watching a film premiere and my song began to play over the final scene. No one could see me in the dark but I had a huge smile on my face. It was a special moment. The songs on this EP were written to accompany “Everything is better than before” on its first cinema outing…”

125undat by LUMP200

LUMP200’s experimental electronica returns with another gently unhinged and unsettling piece that’s loaded with an addictive groove. Just like every time, LUMP200’s music is weirdly mesmerizing.

A German producer and electronic music mastermind, Rene Desalmand, also known as LUMP200, is based in Berlin, and his music is experimental, intentionally disorienting, ominous, and deliciously eerie. ‘125undat’ is the title of LUMP200’s latest single. A symphony of buzzing synths starts lying down the single line, dissonant core melody, unaccompanied, before the beat kicks in and sets everything in motion, in the right direction, wherever that is headed.

Multi-faceted and varied, ‘125undat’ strangely goes through a few carefully constructed sections that sound distinct. From the bustling ambiance in the beginning to the introduction of the supremely tight and peppy groove to the synthetic strings in the last third that lay down anthemic and dark chords. With dissonance being a mainstay throughout the song, we are delighted to report that the danceable groove did not cost ‘125undat’ its foreboding sense of doom and looming horror.

LUMP200’s music is essentially bizarre and challenging, but with his unique set of talent and quite distinctive sensibilities, Desalmand’s music is never actually “difficult” to sit through. Quite the opposite in fact, as is the case with the superb ‘125undat’.

knock on my door by ALICIA DAYDREAMS

At 18, Alicia Daydreams’s name is already shining bright as an eager performer and songwriter, and writing music with a caliber of quality such as that found on her latest single ‘Knock on My Door’ leaves no room to question why that.

Based in London, Alicia Daydreams is a performer, writer, composer, and producer who found her artistic drives at a young age, allowing her to amass considerable experience at a young age. ‘Knock on My Door’ is a sublimely balanced piece of colorful, roomy, and warm art pop with traces of folk and soul. Essentially a radio-friendly cut with a gorgeously organic instrumental tapestry, weighted and meaningful words, and a composition that’s rich with melancholy, both to the chords and to the accessible melodies.

The highlight of ‘Knock on My Door’ would probably be the tight, roomy beat, the groovy bass, and the delightfully shimmering keyboards. An infinitely warm instrumental backs Alicia’s straightforward and passionate delivery of the words. Together, Alicia Daydreams showcases a sublime talent for arranging, a wonderful ear for textures, and just generally a very tasteful style that would leave the masses readily waiting for more.

‘Knock on My Door’ is a single that is equally easy to love and hard to pull off. Alicia Daydreams is masterfully spearheading a warm and roomy ensemble through a delightfully bittersweet sound on this mesmerizing song.

Drip Drip by HIMMAT SINGH

The romantic flow of Hindi is in safe hands with Himmat Singh and his latest summer pop hit. ‘Drip Drip’ was written six years ago, recently recorded and released. Himmat Singh thinks it is relevant to this day, but we are delighted to tell him that a sound this chill and timeless will be relevant for many years to come. Based in San Francisco, Himmat Singh is a singer and songwriter whose sensual and trademark winding melodies are essentially Indian. A piece of acoustic pop folk, sung in Hindi, Himmat Singh sat on the words and chords for ‘Drip Drip’ for 6 years before finally receiving the spart needed to finalize the song. And in two weeks, it was as good as done.

Extremely warm and cozy, the slow tempo and crisp production make ‘Drip Drip’ an essential cut of summertime pop. A beautiful song to listen to with golden sand caressing your feet on a beachy evening, the vibes delivered by ‘Drip Drip’ readily pass the check.

It is ultimately a blessing that Himmat Singh slept on ‘Drip Drip’ until the right moment. That he did not decide to shelf it or to drop it half-cooked all those years ago displays patience and an artistic honesty that you could honestly miss given the song’s directness and simplicity. A beautiful song just in time for a summer that is already bellowing hot.

Take It Back by Cecilia Vacanti

Instrumental folk meets contemporary jazz in the gentlest and most delightful of ways on Cecilia Vacanti’s latest original composition and single, titled ‘Take It Back’.

The penultimate track on Cecilia Vacanti’s upcoming album Earth’s Dark Shore, ‘Take It Back’ is a bustling, celtic tavern jam with blazing fiddles and swung acoustic rhythm. Everything on the song is done spectacularly well, showcasing Vacanti as a top-notch composer and arranger. Based in Boston, Massachusetts, Cecilia Vacanti is a composer, taking the role of lead violinist on ‘Take It Back’. Accompanied by mandolinist Ethan Setiawan, guitarist Maurizio Fiore Salas, and avant-garde bassist Brittany Karlson, the quartet prove to be a musical powerhouse that blends celtic tradition with jazz lounge, French café music, and freeform folk.

For a 6-minute instrumental to end up sounding this tight and entertaining, remaining relevant and fresh throughout its lengthy runtime, is to prove that the musicians have -in one way or another- poured their hearts completely onto the piece. And indeed, listening in for the bass, guitar, violin and fiddle solos, we come face to face with a startling level of musicianship that’s delightful in every way. Calling ‘Take It Back’ a “jam” would be a vast understatement in spite of how many solos find their way onto the piece, because underneath the solos lives a solid and tight core that’s composed, varied, and endlessly engaging.

‘Take It Back’ is a fantastic listen that got me impatient for more from the infinitely bountiful musical world of composer Cecilia Vacanti. With Earth’s Dark Shore right around the bend, I know what I’ll be anticipating for the next couple of weeks.

HONEST by Josh Hicks

Silken smooth and soulful, Josh Hicks’s latest single is a sublimely chill and cozy vibe that displays the fresh-faced British troubadour in possibly his best guise.

Having only burst onto the scene in 2023, Josh Hicks, a singer and songwriter, has not faced difficulty in causing ripples across British musical media. Based in Newport, the artist is growing accustomed to a sound that is steeped deep in soul and RnB. On his latest single titled ‘HONEST’, Hicks has crafted quite a succulent and seductive atmosphere using a blend of vaporous pads, snaky sub bass, watery chords, all along his crisp and distinctive voice, words, and delivery.

‘HONEST’ is a short song whose rich atmosphere carries the brunt of the message it aims to deliver. Populated by a lush layering job of buttery synths and the fresh artist’s multiple vocal layers, the song, in spite of perceived simplicity, ends up sounding nuanced and detailed, but never in an alienating way. Instead, ‘HONEST’ boasts of an endlessly inviting atmosphere that’s dark, creamy, and quite delicious.

Drawing inspirations from Duffy and Ella Fitzgerald, Josh Hick’s balanced quirkiness has earned him comparisons to Amy Winehouse and Sam Smith, both massively unique artists in their own rights. The comparisons do little to define Josh Hick’s distinctive sound that quite fluently blends soul and RnB, though. ‘HONEST’ on the other hand, does a great job at just that.

Album: Water Speckled Midnight by Q3

Water Speckled Midnight is quite simply a delicious collection of noir jazz executed by a seasoned quartet of tasteful professionals. Subdued, delicate, calculated, flowing, and really rather elegant.

A jazz and jazz fusion quartet of the highest caliber, Q3 are based in Cambridge and are composed of Kevin Flanagan on tenor saxophone, Tiago Coimbra on the bass, Martin Hallmark on the piano, and Oscar Reynolds on the drums. The music on Water Speckled Midnight is rich an dense, as expected from an album of instrumental jazz fusion. What Water Speckled Midnight is not, is inaccessible, as in spite of the density, the music is populated by the sweetly effervescent and warm timbres of the classic quartet instrument, as well as by the delicacy of the solos and beats, and the sufficient roundedness of the roomy production.

Made up of 10 compositions and clocking in at one minute short of a full hour, Water Speckled Midnight is a lengthy and winding listen that is never boring. Perhaps because it is not predictable. The pieces on Water Speckled Midnight never miss a chance for a harmonic twist or a tasty solo right around every bend. Taking pieces such as ‘Emerald Eyes’ with its gargantuan length and wealth of solos, on the bass and sax, as an example to the lushness of the music on the record seems to be a good idea. Often, the straightforward beats courtesy of Reynolds are a driving force that drives the music forward into the realms of the usual and easy to follow before, just as often, the beats break into rhythmically menacing jazz passages, with ‘Nomads’ being a perfect example of the quartet’s more outlandish compositional abilities. Be it melodic, rhythmic, or harmonic.

The title piece is a delightfully bustling piece of unadulterated jazz. Blaring saxophone lines, snaking piano licks and a rhythm section that’s being phenomenally tight, ‘Water Speckled Midnight’ is an endlessly smooth piece of music with an unforgettable, quirky motif. ‘Rondo di Girulata’ is one of the record’s most engaging and entertaining pieces. With its quick pace and straight-forward fusion vibe with tangible motifs and phrases, it is perhaps the album’s least experimental cut, and one of the finest. ‘Turnaround Time’ is a sweet and sensible piece, again with a quicker tempo. Revolving around the succinct and balanced solos from Flanagan and Coimbra, this might be the right time to raise the hat for the fantastic bass solos that Tiago Coimbra brings on numerous cuts on the album. Truly one of Britain’s more talented jazz electric bassists.

Being the 3rd album since their inception in 2013, the quartet surely take all the time they need to deliver their music. Founded by Martin Hallmark, the music is mostly written by veteran saxophonist Flanagan who has been active in the UK jazz scene since the 80s, having since performed with acts such as Pink Floyd and Portishead. Taking their time to deliver surely gives each album an exceptional gravitas, and contemplating the exquisite level of detail and musicianship on Water Speckled Midnight, this gravitas certainly is earned. A sublime listen from start to finish.
