Richard Feynman by Man at Sea

0

After a long break from releasing new music Man at Sea has returned with a heart-warming single titled “Richard Feynman” that was released on March 24th.

Man at Sea is the brainchild of English singer/songwriter, composer, and music director David Hewson, who began honing his songwriting skills at the age of 16. Following his move to London for acting school Hewson formed his first band “The Kid Jones”. The band won the Jar Music Breakout Competition in 2010, earning a chance to play at the Breakout Festival in the Maldives. In 2017 he began his solo career under the moniker Man at Sea and started performing locally leading to the release of his debut EP “Minotaur” in 2019.

“Richard Feynman” explores the inner struggles many artists face such as self-doubt, self-criticism, and creative struggles while searching for meaning and purpose in life. The song begins with an acoustic guitar setting the mood and atmosphere for David to sing with his warm and flawless voice. Followed by another verse before the chorus, a strings section comes in to fill the ambiance adding more emotional depth to the song. As the song reaches the first chorus a melodious piano comes in warming up the listener for a smooth full band entrance. Featuring laid-back drums, grounding bass, arpeggiating guitar, and Rhodes that create a wholesome and full soundscape.

“Richard Feynman” is a well-crafted and well-produced song that portrays the struggles many artists face with David’s voice embracing the listener over melodic and rich music, creating a euphoric experience.

EP: Heartbreak in Movements by Alexa Lash

Based in Miami, Florida, singer-songwriter Alexa Lash has just presented her second release to the world: the EP entitled “Heartbreak in Movements”. If it were up to me to pick a name for this EP then I wouldn’t have chosen a better one, for the album is composed of string instruments and a piano that were recorded in an open room studio. The organic and heart-shattering feel of the vocals on this record is laid against a backdrop of classical (and classical-inspired) arrangements that fit perfectly with being called “movements”. Now that we have the title aside, the artwork is composed of a bunch of abstract elements put together to have a different reception that’s very subjective to every fan and everyone who comes across it, and it’s great to see an artwork that’s good enough to exist as a separate piece from the album like this.

Now on to the tracks themselves; the first track, Not Fine, is a great show of the immense range and technicality that Alexa has. With the opening strings and the piano passage, the vocals begin with a full and resonant chest register that relies on timbre and twang to show its emotional qualities. Later on in the verse, she lifts her intonation way up into the mixed register without losing any of the melody or beauty that she began with – an amazing malleability that’s rarely found when singers go higher in their range. Another ability I came to appreciate just from the first track was the control of her nasality and how she doesn’t make it sound extra or overdone but on the contrary, her consonant clarity and accent give her voice a special and unique personality. The song makes use of the lower-ranged strings to keep things on an adequate level of emotion to the vocals and lyrics, and the brightness of the piano contrasts that atmosphere with a much-needed element of vulnerability and fragility.

The second track, Weak, has slightly different vocal styles. The overall vibe is still close, as it’s still mostly wailing and emotional passages, but this time around we hear a lot more of the head and heady to mixed register. In the refrain, we can hear the violins taking the lead role in the melody, and this serves to prove how the recording style of the album serves its emotional and musical purpose of being an emotional and raw-sounding record. My favourite part of the track has got to be the bridge and its subsequent outro. The most brilliant and thoughtful line in the lyrics is:

“Is this what love, is this what love’s supposed to feel like, feel like

Do wrong, do wrong until you’re finally doing something right”

Miracle is the first track to put some effects and processing on the vocals. Their style feels a lot more rock-ish when compared to the bluesy/retro style of the previous tracks, which made me wonder how all these different styles and flavors work with such a super classical arrangement. This track’s hook/chorus is one of my favorite moments on the entire record, and it’s all thanks to the smoothness of the string arrangement that creates a natural and raw feeling of magic and mesmerization.

Let Her Move On begins with a piano melody that reminds me of big classical songs like those that used to be arranged for Edith Piaf. Alexa sounded like a mix of Tori Amos and Amy Winehouse here, and I never would’ve thought a singer would be able to mix elements from these two. Her won personality outshines her influences though once the pre-chorus and chorus of the song hit, where she once again plays around with her different registers like it’s an easy task and like her voice is one wide-ranged instrument because of how smooth her breaks sound. This is a number that’s so timeless it perfectly belongs to the 1940s, 1960s, and 2023 all at once. The ominous and dark melody that the strings play during the chorus is similar to nothing I’ve ever heard before, and they go full throttle with the vocal riffing on the final chorus – the moment that makes this track a total masterpiece.

The fifth and final track, MIA, has fast-paced and percussive piano staccatos which made me think of how different this song would’ve sounded if it had different instrumentation…maybe it will be just the same when they play it live, who knows? The lyrics feel like a resentful personal conversation towards an ex-lover or friend that the song’s protagonist has a bad history with. The arrangement sounds classical enough to fit with the rest of the tracks, but somehow there’s an element to it that feels like those strings are piano are arranged and playing in a way that’s more akin to more modern genres like rock, blues, and even musical theatre…especially with that cello solo that made me wonder if it was written on guitar then converted to the cello.

All in all, this album has a lot of moments that made me think of the musicianship and songwriting process behind them but even more moments where I was just ensnared by the sheer emotions of the music and just closed my eyes to feel the emotions channeled by Alexa’s gliding through the notes and passages of her range and how she pertains those emotions no matter what technique or part of the range she’s in. For a sophomore release, this album feels like it has years of musical knowledge and experience behind it, and Alexa has worked for over a year on this particular album in a way that paid off and garnered more than the sum of its parts.

KG by Synedoche Montauk

0

One of contemporary pop’s leading visionaries and a production extraordinaire returns with a teaser single ahead of a new album, and it is as striking as expected.

Synedoche Montauk is the moniker of the Moscow-born, London-based Savva Rozanov. Savva is a singer/songwriter/producer who has been redefining genres for a decade since his solo project Synedoche Montauk launched, and he does so with a mixture of Russian, cold darkness, reflective, provocative lyrics, and finely crafted musical soundscapes that are equally poignant, beautiful, and desolate, and none of this could be at a better display than on KG, the lead single off his upcoming full-length album ‘ACUME’.

‘KG’ is an electropop song with a glacial, end-of-the-world sound to it, courtesy of looming, warped synths, a melancholy-laced composition, a memorable and hectic electronic drum part, and Savva’s sensible and soulful delivery, and for those of us who don’t speak Russian, the mystique of its sound strikes a particular chord that makes the sound of the piece even more desolate and dark.

Recorded at the height of the pandemic, the album’s songs were mostly written in a short time and directly from the heart and were sent to the mastering stage in the month before the all-out Russian invasion of Ukraine occurred, which prompted Savva to rethink the release of those songs. Having no words in the album about war or conflict might seem a little disconnected from reality, but Rozanov deemed the album’s contemplative observations about our past to be of help in explaining the current world we live in.

‘KG’ is full of doom and gloom, but with easy-to-see elegance and grace to its pacing, sound design, and vocal performance, for a result that’s stunning yet brimming with darkness, which is to be expected from one of the world’s leading, Russian-speaking pop artists that you may have never heard of. Yet.

Love is Blind by Ruiz!

Ruiz says about himself that he’s quite the newcomer to the whole scene of writing and producing songs, but for such a fresh face, his latest single, titled Love is Blind, is catchy, dynamic, and fun.

Ruiz! is the moniker for Hugh Ruiz Robert, a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer, Sheffield-based, Barcelona born. Having started his musical journey during the lockdown, Ruiz has so far released eight singles, and ‘Love is Blind’ is his ninth. The sound on his latest single is energetic and creates a fuss in the room with its rowdy guitar riffs, and Britpop-inspired, swaggering vocal delivery. Love is Blind is about the realization that true love is a matter of effort and intention, and that adult life, with its melodrama and responsibilities, is ought to change our perspectives, changing our perspectives over our relationships, thus challenging them, and here Ruiz asks a simple question; why can’t just make it easier on each other.

The sound of the single is fun. A cut of rowdy synthpop with a healthy dose of distorted guitar riffing. The contrast between the hushed verses that draw you in with their sci-fi synth sounds and the loud and driving choruses creates a clear distinction that pushes the song forward, making each part compelling and solid on its own.

Love is Blind is proof that in today’s world, you really don’t need much to create a good song, if you happen to have the sensibility for it. Ruiz, using an Arturia keyboard, along with his ear for melodies and arrangement, happened to craft a neat little tune with a soulful message that’s ready to send you to introspective hyperspace with its words, and ready to rock your drive home with its tight riffs.

Senses by Ben Kelly

0

Ben Kelly’s latest single is a minimalistic piece of chill R&B with an organic, earthy sound, alongside lazy and sensual singing from an up-and-coming soul star.

The Washington DC-based Ben Kelly is a singer and producer who pranced on to the scene only a few months back, and during such a small amount of time, he managed to amass a following that will only continue to grow with each of his releases. His latest release is ‘Senses’, and it is laid back and gorgeous.

The simple ‘Senses’ is a chill piece of R&B, laced with soul all around. The minimalist arrangement only features a laid-back groove, made of trap drums, a simple but warm bass line, and a clean, creamy guitar laying down the chords, along with Ben Kelly’s heartfelt vocals that are approachable in delivery, and soothing is timbre. Ben Kelly’s singing is atmospheric and smooth.

‘Senses’ will certainly help Ben Kelly as he attempts to find his footings and his sound. This cut’s contemporary feel is welcoming and its earthy production is fitting, for wholesome results that encourage replays.

On Starry Nights by Anton Commissaris

Another remarkable single dropped last month by Anton Commissaris. In just one month, his latest release: “On Starry Nights” reached over 11K streams on Spotify, and the music video got over 6K views on YouTube.

The talented and artistic artist never ceases to sweep us off our feet with his jazzy ambiance, unique tunes, and feel-good songs. Anton’s passion for music is an unstoppable force, he released five EPs in less than two years; mainly focused on jazz while exploring other elements in different genres like rock, Soul, R&B, and others.

As always, Commissaris’ songs are never what they seem; either they’re based on intriguing storylines, and poetic meanings or have depth. “On Starry Nights” is his 2nd single released this year as part of his latest EP: “Some of the Time.” The single was inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s “The Starry Night” painting, which was Van Gogh’s illustration of the view before sunrise from his east-facing window in his asylum room. Anton builds a dream and a wonderful storyline with his music; “a Bossa Nova love story in a small village in Provence, France.” The music is very distinguishing with its strong horns, swinging rhythms, and gentle vocals, setting a romantic, dreamy mood. The song’s music video is the perfect illustration as it paints the storyline accurately, helping you set the right mood and ambiance to get into the artist’s mind.

Apryll Aileen’s “Catch Me” Encapsulates the Lonely Thrill of Adventure

0

Apryll Aileen is a classically trained pianist with a touch of science and spirituality; an alt-pop soulful vocalist, guitarist and songwriter from Atlantic Canada. Chock full of captivating lyrics and melodic hooks, her songwriting will leave you saturated in all the feels, wanting to dance but also, contemplate life’s meaning.

Her new song, “Catch Me,” was written from her perspective of being an independent female artist, traveling around the world to share her music and passion with others, but also, always feeling alone on that journey, sacrificing romantic relationships and time with friends. She elaborates, “I could never clearly express this burning desire in me to keep creating and moving forward and it has become much like a double edge sword. I often feel like a musical James Bond with a strong mission and purpose to fulfill, that is not actualized without the sacrifice of living a ‘normal’ life.”
