Realm by Clay Joule

0

Clay Joule’s latest single is not only a musically coherent and compelling piece of composition, but it also handles a highly original concept that never even crossed my mind before, and does so lovingly and organically, for a final result that’s honest and thought-provoking, next to being musically rich.

Inspired by the Chinese ‘White Paper Movement’, in which the country’s repressive Covid lockdown restrictions ultimately caused more damage than that prevented, when it led masses down to protest their stolen freedoms, the Secauses, NJ-based Clay Joule wrote this single, titled Realm, to celebrate governments all around the world, that managed to deal with that devastating humane crisis with tact and intelligence, maintaining the people’s sense of freedom, and inducing atmospheres of national solidarity, which was witnessed in countless touching clips from many of the world’s worst-hit countries, like Italians collectively singing from their balconies across the street, or the French doing the same thing but with dancing instead. This original concept, which provides a rare instance of governments being viewed in a positive light in music, was eye-opening, touching, and thought-provoking.

The backing music, far from being the core focus of the song, is still tasteful and rich. Grand piano chords pave the way for a throbbing synth bass rhythm, a serene and soaring string arrangement, harrowing, airy pads, and a minimal drum line that mainly plays a militaristic marsh on the snare. The dramatic and emotional chord progressions are fitting and appropriately spaced, providing apt depth to the arrangement, along with Joule’s intimate and untreated vocal delivery, which sounds relatable and touching. The crowning jewel is unquestionably the prominent inclusion of bagpipes. Symbolizing the grandeur of those highly intelligent and patriotic authorities, the bagpipes are a delightful addition that gives this song a flair that sets it even further apart from all its peers.

We have on our hands a song that praises governments, with a lot of bagpipes, and it’s brilliant and sweet, and if that is not left-field, then I do not what could possibly be.

Celina Wolfe Released New EP!

Celina Wolfe released ‘Coming Right Back’ from her latest EP, CCELINA.

On the surface, most people would assume that this is a breakup song. It’s really about overcoming my battle with addiction and alcoholism. I will never forget the feeling of being brought to my knees, with absolutely no fight left in me, begging to whatever God or force that was out there to relieve me of the insanity.

Apple of My Eye by DJ Zenas

0

People sometimes ruin relationships with their own expectations. They force things to be perfect, neglecting the fact that the perfection of a relationship lies in embracing its imperfections. In his latest single, “Apple of My Eye,” DJ Zenas embodies this mature, perfectly imperfect love.

“Apple of My Eye” is the Fort Worth-based artist DJ Zenas’ fresh drop. He dares the boundaries of genres and the fantasies of Disney’s nonexistent ideal love in his smooth, upbeat take. It features a mix of Pop, R&B, and Hip-Hop that together present one organic sound that suits the charismatic vocal performance.

Right from the start, the song carries both chill and elated vibes. All the elements move at a mellow, steady pace to set a poetic mood. DJ Zenas has a sensational, saccharine tone, which makes the track subtle for the nearly coming Valentine. His vocal line changes and colors to suit the style of each genre.

The song’s ingredients work together to offer an easy-going execution. While the melodies are anthemic and highlight the endearing, flirty lyricism, the beat is simple yet effective enough to give the song a spark. The entire musical composition is rhythmic and atmospheric in the right minimalist manner.

If you got someone who you want them to know that: “No one and no love is perfect. When all is said and done, throughout all of the ups, downs, and everything in between, I still choose you.” As DJ Zenas put it, then all you’ve got to do is send them this song and let it work its magic.

***CH by Bri Fletcher

0

Coming in a little too strong, starting 2023 with a loud (and slightly offensive) bang, Bri Fletcher’s new single is delightfully catchy and pretty, and mercifully far less profane than what first appears.

Hailing from Nashville, Bri Fletcher is loyal to her musical homage. A singer/songwriter whose brand of dance-country music is groovy, sweet, and catchy. Beautifully sung and flawlessly produced, her latest single, code-named ***CH, follows her first EP release ‘Chapter One’ which dropped in October of 2022, and is an indication as to why Bri has been gaining steady traction over the past year, with her songs featured in a lot of Spotify playlists, with over 150k monthly listens on the platform, and among a flurry of critical praise, in which a publication placed her in an “elite category of vocalists”, and we couldn’t agree more.

Putting the peppy songwriting and the concise production aside for a moment, we can clearly see that Fletcher’s voice and powerful delivery are the stars of the show. A truly capable singer with immense control, and a texture that’s smooth as silk, and it’s all quite elegantly utilized in ***CH. With a heartfelt and tragic story of betrayal, the upbeat music offers some refreshing contrast that helps to bandage the sharp pang of being cheated on. A multitude of funky guitar riffs, along with a groovy beat that’s extremely easy to dance to, make a song that is immensely fun and catchy, and a wonderful voice and a soulful delivery are two delicious cherries on top.

Bri’s upward spiral is still on a steady rise with her release of this fun and catchy tune, that’s sweetly written, and gorgeously sung.

Ethic Endless Fun by Beatdenker

0

There must be something in the German air that propels all this amount of musical and rhythmic ingenuity. From the pioneering propagators of industrial music Kraftwerk to Krautrock icons Neu!, and Can, there is no shortage of pioneering German acts that shared in the creation and helped to popularize a massive sector of today’s experimental, industrial, and electronic music scenes, and still to this day, the Berlin electronic music circles are regarded as some of the world’s most revered and fruitful ones worldwide with acts such as Nachlader and Moderat being internationally renowned.

Beatdenker might be considered a musical outcast, creating music that will appeal to only a select few that will be able to truly appreciate the depth and intelligence behind his seemingly lighthearted and humorous approach, but as an associate of that Berlin scene, the bug of ingenuity did not spare him, and the output is music that’s filled to the brim with sophisticated and extremely dense musical atmospheres and rhythmic structures, so complex that they appear at once fragile and terribly delicate, that they will collapse in on themselves with the removal of a single kick, and tough castles of fortified, impregnable passages of endlessly intricate music.

Ethic Endless Fun, Beatdenker’s latest album, is a collection of sounds rich with character and charisma, with a polarizing sound that will leave you either in awe of its nuanced grandeur, or totally lost between its endless layers of interfering sounds. Built-in a purely electronic manner, the music on this release completely revolves around synthesizers, drum machines, and loopers, and the infinite wonders therein. The layering on this collection of sounds is dense and usually difficult to interpret, the rhythms complicated and nuanced, and the output is more often than not jaw-dropping. Stress-inducing at times, with flickering textures pit against layers of interfering basses, and almost entirely hypnotic throughout, with the, puffed up timbres, and aesthetically compelling atmospheres that practice the sneaky art of hypnosis through information overload, which is a term I just came up with, so don’t take my word for it.

The notably high production standard is a lifesaver. With a collection of sounds so dense and rich, and based on the nuanced interplay between more-than-a-few layers, it’s very easy to envision this whole construct falling to pieces with a subpar production, but the fact is that the production is incredibly nice and accommodating to the massive amount of layers and instruments, a considerable feat that deserves considerable admiration. It is also cause for admiration that throughout this entire album, Beatdenker managed to effortlessly evade using any beats or passages that use common time, or even usual beats of any remotely common musical style. Instead, every passage seems to be a self-contained rhythmic idea, pulling from a massive list of influences, contemporary’s and non-contemporary, from Aphex Twin’s bewildering atmospheres to the great Jazz improvisers and their startling, fluent choices, and the towering, rhythmic nuances of Carnatic/Indian music, for an end product that, while not readily accessible to the masses, will have no hard to time finding its connoisseurs and admirers from lovers of this style of music.

As a listener, I felt compelled to appreciate Ethic Endless Fun, with its hypnotic effect and dazzling complexity, as a musician/producer I felt in awe in the presence of the many feats that this record is full of, and as an artist, I was stuck admiring Beatdenker’s dedication and unfaltering vision that easily stitches the endless knots that form these 9 pieces of music. A must-listen for lovers of this kind of music.

My True Love’s Eye by Manny Wilde

0

Today’s Jazz single is one about a forbidden love, and how a lover’s eye, and heart, can end up justifying terrible things for the sake of one of the strongest and purest emotions that we, as humans, are capable of… it helps that the arrangement, harmony, vibes, and performances are all pristine, beautiful, and sensual.

Manny Wilde is a Venezuelan-born singer and songwriter who is based in Los Angeles, and while rare, the Jazz scene indeed seems to bustle elsewhere other than New York. Manny’s ‘My True Love’s Eye’ is a tale about loving a married person, and how the heart will helplessly glance over all the glaring red flags in such a situation, risking ruining a home, and potentially a family, the protagonist is hopelessly infatuated and takes this as an excuse for his selfishness.

Hopefully, not a biographical piece of music, My True Love’s Eye is West Coast Noir Jazz in its simplest and purest form, starting from the drop-dead gorgeous harmony, carried over by a sparkling grand piano, and a commanding and grand upright bass, playing only the most appropriate of notes. There’s no hint of doubt that the rhythm and harmony are delivered with flawless, classical opulence; an effortless, gentle breeze of graceful jazz. The swooning strings are also an aesthetic that helps make this piece one quintessentially traditional noir jazz song. Serene, sometimes adding drama, but mostly understated and romantic, the strings are wonderfully arranged and are a perfect accompaniment to Manny Wilde’s easygoing and effortless vocal delivery.

By the end of this piece, you will readily begin to forgive the selfishness of the protagonist in his doomed, or dooming affair, because of the stark gentleness, beauty, and sheer, passionate soul of this piece of music. A traditional cut that displays exactly why this style of music remains timeless and is continually enjoyed, admired, and thankfully, practiced.

Bridge To Babylon by Olly Hite

0

There’s a type of love that can consume you in both good and bad ways, the kind that takes you to new heights and then drops you into strange galaxies. Olly Hite’s sentimental ballad, “Bridge To Babylon,” tells you more about this sort of unsustainable love through its serene atmosphere.

The UK singer/songwriter Olly Hite is a witty musician who crafts wonders with his soulful piano and warm vocals. His single “Bridge To Babylon” contains his captivating talents as a singer and songwriter. It is co-written and produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Robert Cutarella and released through Mesa Bluemoon Recordings, based in California.

“Bridge To Babylon” is a classic affection tale that conveys an extraordinary type of love through mellow fabrics of heartfelt elements. Whether you’re an emotional person or not, the piano-driven ballad is a 4-minute dose of soul-stirring; it simply has the ability to set the mood for a dreamy, enamored sense.

The single opens with Olly Hite’s silky vocal line, which is accompanied by tranquil piano. This captivating duo stays in tuneful sync, aiming to melt the heart. Olly Hite’s intimate voice has a can’t-be-ignored resemblance to The Beatles’ John Lennon. He has a nostalgic vibe that makes the song sound timeless.

While the song moves at a leisurely pace, the bridge is intense and bitter, illustrating the part where one wonders why the story ended:

“Where did we go?

How could we be wrong?

Seems so strong.. together.

Where did we begin

to fall from Grace

And lose our way forever?”

Love brings peace into one’s life, and if it ends, looking back on its reminiscences brings longing and melancholy. “Bridge To Babylon” vulnerable narrative captures all these bittersweet emotions and offers a heartwarming yet heartbreaking delivery.

Benefit Of The Doubt by Zoe Guigueno

0

Artist Zoe Guigueno released a beautiful, soaring Jazz and folk-pop song that is much needed to slow down in our fast past world, called ‘Benefit of the doubt’, truly opening the wound and grazing gracefully some salt on it, against an amazing, magical soundscape. All the way from Vancouver Island, Canada, this song was released on the 23rd of September, and is the second single from her new album ‘ We were radar stations. It’s a collaboration with producer Juno who is a childhood friend.

The song is a heartfelt collection of life experiences that are painful and shocking, which give off an undertone of darkness because of the storytelling in the lyrics. It’s like a sonic journal reading from a book. The overall sound of the song is ethereal and soothing, with a very mellow and soft jazzy soundscape. The musical arrangement is rich, with a slow pace that is led by light cymbals that are very prominent. The piano behaves as if a finger touches the beat, and the drums are intense yet soft. There are also very explosive electric guitar riffs. For some reason, the composition of the music gives off a sound that is very similar to Pink Floyd. There is an anticipation of a rock music sound that is very high in frequency which makes the song extra enjoyable. The vocals are steady, soft, and raw. You must add this song to your playlist for something very different and tasteful.

Christmas Mood by Jesabel

0

Christmas Mood is flirty, sensual, and packed with innuendos that would make a fun time trying to decipher the not-so-hidden meanings behind them with your special someone, but most of all, it’s a gorgeous song with a majestic vibe that I can’t see to get over, exploring more layers of musical richness with each listen.

Jesabel, a singer/songwriter hailing from Jacksonville, Florida, released this alluring single around Christmas time, and it suffices to mention that the Christmas mood we’re discussing here is one that’s totally different from the innocent and festive one you have in mind. This playful wordplay is paired with a piece of songwriting that I can easily describe as sublime.

The arrangement is layered and rich, the composition is modal and scintillating, and the voice is sensual and warm, the delivery is inviting. The outstanding string arrangement, courtesy of Anton Patzner, is grand and majestic, opts for dramatic violins and violas instead of a full quartet, which lends the arrangement a sense of heightened tension and makes it more potently emotive, and it helps that the composition is in the playful and exciting Mixolydian mode, which in turn helps the song’s tonality stand out and sound special. Usual Christmas musical tropes are also at full blast, which anchors this song as one that’s indeed for Christmas, just a special Christmas.

Playful, quirky, and endlessly loaded with musical ingenuity, Jesabel’s Christmas Mood is the Christmas gift I never knew I needed. Another gift is my discovery of Jesabel’s hauntingly gorgeous voice, and her lush songwriting. With co-writing and production credit given to Jonathan Grant Berlin of The Loft Studio, I can only sit and wait for more musical offerings that combine those two names, whose chemistry is outstanding. Sublime.
